I think this is a bit more exciting than some of the others. He's young enough to have used sports science and was at a top level most of his career so will have a good level of professionalism and high expectations. Probably more exciting is he'll have a different set of contacts from the usual suspects having been in Finland, England and here.

Whether he's tactically good or a good man manager remains to be seen but I'm fairly positive about this.

The talk of needing an experienced manager is nonsense. If these managers where that good they wouldn't be anywhere near the Morton job so we should be looking at people fairly early on in their careers.

Agreed. I'm not doing cartwheels but JJ is a gamble well worth taking.

While I'm happy to avoid the usual names I'd far rather we went for someone with any kind of track record. An unknown quantity in Johansson is obviously preferable to a known dud in the likes of Hughes and Smith, but we could still attract someone outwith the stereotypical Scottish group who has had some degree of managerial success - Ryder, Wake - rather than taking a totally blind gamble on someone who has never managed before.

I get where you are coming and agree in an ideal world from but i guess even the best managers need to start somewhere. If you just look at our league;

Archibald started his managerial career with Thistle after JM got bagged and has overall did well, winning the league in his first season and keeping them up for 4-5 years.

The two boys at County are in the first managerial position and appear to be doing well( I know they have money but that doesn't mean everything as DU have proved in recent seasons)

Goodwin at Alloa is another one in his first position and already has a good reputation and been lined with the Skunk job twice.

On an even bigger scale- Gerrard has started off well at Rangers and Martin Canning continues to do a great job at Hamilton considering what resources they have and what they are up against.

So overall, while ideally we hire a young, fresh manager with decent managerial success, it can and hopefully will work out for us even if he hasn't been his own man previously!

6th September 2018 by Jonathan Mitchell

Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Jonatan Johansson as our new first-team manager on a two-year contract.

The former Rangers, Charlton Athletic, Norwich City, Hibernian, and St Johnstone striker takes charge with immediate effect.

A Finnish international who won over 100 caps for his country, Johansson began his coaching career at Cappielow as co-development squad manager with David Hopkin in 2012.

From here, the 43-year-old moved to Motherwell and took charge of their Under-20s before spells as an assistant manager with both the Finland national team and, most recently, Rangers.

Through our previous working relationship with Skelmorlie-based Johansson, we saw potential as a first-team manager and identified him as our primary target to fill the role.

Jonatan is a real student of the game and, as well as impressing with his knowledge and ideas during discussions, his aims and ambitions were in line with our own. This was vital.

The board of directors recognise that we have a fantastic changing room comprised of a talented group of players and we wanted to ensure that there was a synergy between them and the new manager.

We firmly believe that Jonatan’s structured mindset, hunger to succeed, and personable manner will be an ideal fit with our current squad and are thrilled to welcome him to the club.

Chairman Crawford Rae said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce Jonatan Johansson as the new manager of Greenock Morton Football Club.

“Jonatan has a fantastic CV, both playing and coaching, and has been eager for an opportunity to get into management. We are thrilled about our appointment and we look forward to sharing this new chapter together.

“JJ has a fantastic work ethic, a great football brain, and I cannot wait to see him in action as we rekindle Greenock Morton’s long-standing Nordic association of over 50 years.”

Much more appealing than the rent-a-duds that were being touted about, so pleased enough that we've looked elsewhere.

I suppose the thing about him going between a load of jobs is only really an issue because of what happened with McKinnon. He's got a load of experience across different roles, leagues and countries so he could turn out to be a very shrewd appointment but I suppose we'll just need to wait and see.

Welcome aboard.
