The Famous v Partick

Got to admit, I prefer a league with Airdrie in it.

I'd far rather have Airdrie in the division than Alloa or even County or Inverness (granted that's in part because the latter two have been far more successful than us lately, so there's been no chance for a rivalry to develop.) Hate them or hate them, Airdrie are a proper central belt club with tradition - and tradition against Morton.

This is likely to be the drink talking but when you think about things that way and factor in these teams having more success then us, it makes you wonder if it's worth it. There's a certain sense of pride about being a morton fan and knowing we've done things this way, and it's hard but it's part of the reason I love supporting the team.

Morton aren't perfect, and there is a lot of things I would love to change about Morton, but you're right. There is something special about Morton which other don't quite fit the bill.

Aye, the cup finals and stuff would be amazing but I wouldn't swap support Morton for any other team. I've actually enjoyed being a Morton fan more in this wee period since the rat left than I have for ages.

I agree with the above. But I've wondered sometimes about that - do we regard Morton as unique because they are unique, or just because we support them? Do fans of teams like Elgin feel the same way? Montrose? Alloa? Even Ross County? Probably. But in our case, we are one of the 20 oldest existing full-time professional clubs in the world, and as much as Inverclyde has suffered a probably irreversible decline since the 1960s, Cappielow is still standing and we're still here. I don't live in Greenock anymore and probably* never will again, but it does feel like a special club and even though the town is crawling with OF fans, I think it would be immeasurably weaker without Morton.

*hopefully. Sorry, but it's true :D

Airdrie's traditions all died back in 2002. They are a zombie club. Alloa might be a wee diddy team but they are a proper club, which a wee toon in the middle of nowhere will be proud about. Theyre not some sham outfit living a in a rotten corpse of another club.

When I hear, see or read about a club being special I always think about clubs like Nottingham Forest who won two consecutive European Cups in 1979 and 1980; or Red Star Belgrade and the role they played in the Balkan Wars. Legia Warsaw and the defiant siege and standoff with the Nazis are another example. When it comes to Football in the great scheme of things, Morton aren't that special.

The Lisbon Lion gobshite that is Bertie Auld loves to tell the tale that were all born within a short bus ride of 'thu Gallagate' to anyone with a TV camera in his vacinity and how such a feat will never happen again, someone ought to tell him of the 1991 Red Star Belgrade side or the 1986 Steaua Bucharest side.

Dare I say it, Morton may be a pretty average club but they're special to us. It's who we know and love.

I left Greenock in the 80s, most of my family were scattered nationally in the unemployment during the Thatcher years, there was five years plus when I barely revisited Scotland. When the Raes rescued Morton I'd moved back as far as Glasgow and since then Morton has been my connection back to the town of my birth (even if I don't get any closer these days than Cartsdyke). The club is still special to me.

I have pals who support Forfar, Elgin, Brechin and Ross County. None of them feel the same way we do about Morton.

County fans do feel special in their own way but that all originates from their Cup Run a few years back with that stunning 2-0 win at Hampden vs Celtic. They also still have fans from their highland league days.

Anyway, its not the same as Morton as we have this unique feeling and history and especially the 'we saved our club' factor which most teams don't have. No other club is as much of a rollerclaster as the Ton and there is no ground bett than Cappielow

Yep, and in Europe, and in a major Cup final.

Now look at them.

Sad!

I'd forgotten about that!

My point was actually about what they had done from our perspective - the number of teams who have been in the top flight since we last left it is an affront.

Regarding Airdrie (and later Rangers) - I'd honestly rather have had our unbroken history than go through what they have. Doesn't mean I'm not annoyed at our lack of top flight football.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Airdrie are a zombie club - a rebadged version of the club formerly known as Clydebank. They are even lower down than Sevco in my estimations. At least sevco had the decency to form a new club and start at the bottom (albeit not without trying to get parachuted into a higher level.)

Airdrie on the other hand went out of business, leaving countless creditors high and dry, then proceeded to cannibalise Clydebank F.C., rebrand them as airdrie United, relocate them and change the strip.

I used to enjoy our matches against airdrieonians, and would agree that they were a proper central belt club with a lot of history etc. Sadly they died. To me the current tribute act were; still are, and always will be Clydebank

As much as I enjoyed yesterday let's not get carried away! The Thistle were truly awful and their new manager must be thinking " God what have I taken on here"

As football fan I'm sorry to see just how far they have fallen.

And it would be much better for everyone if Clydebank still existed in that guise rather than the horrible Airdrie tribute act who are one of the most toxic clubs in scotland.

I'm not. Get it up them, they've been in the 3rd tier before so going back won't hurt them too much.

Peter Weatherson is the greatest player since Ritchie, and should be assigned 'chairman for life'

I’m not, at all. Sod them, sod their weird fanbase and sod their lottery money.

Ive actually had a bit of a soft spot for Partick since the day they horse Sellic in the league cup final in the seventies. I stayed in the Grieve Road high flats at the time and our nieghours across the landing were of a green persuasion.

That’s all the dad and son talked about, so when Thistle humped them 4-1 in a national final I found it highly amusing.

Some of the kids up the block had a Subbuteo league on the go, I even bought a Partick team to get it up the wee guy next door. Of course we were only about 12 or 13 at the time.

And they are not the Old Firm.

Couldnt give a fuck about them tbh. One of my best mates is a Thistle fan and he’s brand new unlike the rest of them but I want them pumped like every other team in the league 👍🏻 Get them down with Falkirk.

There is a very good book called 'Stramash' by Daniel Gray about 'small town Scotland and its teams. The cover photo is of a queue at the bus stop on the main road outside Cappielow on a driech day.

An interesting read.

I’m in that picture when I was 17.

One of the folk who clapped a Thistle song yesterday.
