Squad for next Season

Blues had a tough task today and had players doubling up on his side after the yellow card. He still did fine, especially whenever they tried to switch play. To get through that game on a booking for an hour is worthy of credit.

While I'd very much like a natural right back I'm not buying that we'll get found out at Championship level if we can't get one. Blues was our best player playing RB at Ross County in the group. O'Connor has also played well there. If it's a choice between a 'natural' right back like, say, Michael Doyle, or waiting to land a genuine prize like Sir Richard (or any similar quality elsewhere - like Grimshaw last season) later this year then we absolutely should not spend our resources on a second rate option to fill that position.

We need a quality and ideally versatile player to improve the squad more than a specialist in any position now.

Well, aye. The quality addition being a right back who can play in the middle is the ideal scenario. Blues gave it everything he had today but he got roasted - Matondo just has no end product.

I don't think he got roasted at all by 'away game at Old Firm' standards. He got booked and didn't win every one on one (who did?) but the number of serious opportunities down our right hand side was limited given the amount of pressure they put on that side of the park.

The biggest blow to us today was when they took that ringer 'Sterling' off the park as he was securing our left hand side and gifting us possession every two minutes.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Not sure how he's been in recent years but Jason Naismith has been released by Cove. Can cover RB and CB - wouldn't be adverse to it. Sort of player I can imagine Dougie would get a chime out of

Already signed for Johnstone Burgh of all teams

Money explains his signing for Johnstone Burgh now (as well as his last few clubs). A completely overrated 'prospect' in his spell with us regardless and I'm not surprised to see his career wash up in failure.

Junior clubs have always had benefactors spending stupid money on players but it feels like it's more pronounced now for two reasons: the pyramid adds some extra allure, and maybe slightly counterintuitively there is right now less of a gap between lower-league clubs than there has been before

I suppose anyone else who was at the game today could have seen the same thing, but  when the players came over to the fans after the full time whistle my eyes were trained on Robbie Crawford the whole time and there wasn’t even a hint of a wave from him, only applause.  Im going to hold onto that and hope that it means he isn’t about to leave us

Why would he be waving? We have been told there has been no approaches.

Getting closer to the window shutting. What's everyone's thoughts?

Would still like to see a rb, cover at lb/cb and a goalscorer come in.

Could see king going out on loan and I really hope we don't lose anyone else to another club

There's a storm on the horizon

And for that I can't see the sun

For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement

For the ice cream van to come

I can see Dougie making do with a make shift RB for the time being then we will sign Doyle when back from injury on a free!

I think we'll get one more in defence and that's it. Two would be fantastic if it allowed a natural right back as well as a centre back who can cover left back, but we've already got 18 signed up, not including Garrity.

I reckon it's most likely we'll get that centre back and see O'Connor become first choice right back. Obviously in an ideal world that's Ricki Lamie but probably not likely going by the Daily Record yesterday. Maybe a natural right back will emerge from somewhere and that'll be us, but we're not the only club who've struggled to find one.

I wouldn't be adverse to seeing a young striker being picked up (potentially on loan). I love George and Robbie up top but I would like to see a different type of striker, a different option off the bench. Especially with how injury prone Jai is, we really lacked some raw pace on Saturday.

However, the defensive positions are the priority.

Agree with this. Think a striker that offers something a bit different would be good business, you can tell Oakley gets a bit leggy towards the end of games and think a different type of striker could benefit us even to bring on for the last 15/20 mins of games.

In a fantasy land I’d love us to bring in a RB,CB and ST but realistically think we will only bring in one defender. Whether that’s a RB or CB remains to be seen. Could possibly see us signing Doyle when he returns to full fitness tbh.

My thoughts are that as always, the window shutting is of little relevance to us.

Just as likely if not even more likely to see our signings after it shuts.

Hopeful that at that stage, someone will be willing to let a decent right back go out.

At this stage I would be surprised if we don't end up offering Doyle a deal at least until January once he is fully fit (assuming we don't manage to source another RB in the meantime).  You know what you are getting with him, and after the support he has had from the club I think he would run through brick walls for a chance to repay that faith.  I doubt he will have many other offers on the table so I don't have any issue with us giving him a short term deal if we don't manage to bring anyone else in.

I don't want to see us send King out on loan - he has shown that he is worthy of his place in the squad, can cover a couple of positions, and has never let us down.  For a lad of his age he shows a lot of maturity in his game & I would hope to see him continue his development here as opposed to out on loan in the seaside leagues.  Only way this would make sense for me is if we were to sign another 3 or 4 players(which clearly isn't going to happen) and he went right down the pecking order.

I agree with what a few others have said above about us possibly benefitting from another option up front, although clearly this is less of a priority than a RB & defensive cover.  In an ideal world I would like to see us bring in (in order of importance)

RB - Either Doyle or someone else (although I am running out of ideas as to who)

CB - (ideally who can cover LB) - Lamie would be great but might not be realistic.  Filling this position could alleviate the RB problem as O'connor has shown he is more than capable in that position but ideally I would like us to bring in both and allow O'connor to play in his strongest position.

Striker - Maybe a youngster on loan as no way are we signing anyone to come in ahead of Muirhead or Oakley

Suggesting interest from other Premiership teams and down south though.

I was thinking that vague statements about interest from unnamed "Scottish Premiership & EFL clubs" sounded a bit familiar so I looked up who his agent is.  Turns out he & Robbie Crawford are both represented by the same one.  Read into that what you will.  So bringing him back might not be out of the question after all
