Morton vs Falkirk 21st Feb

Posted this in the other thread not long after the second went in:

Shame game. There's only one team playing football here. But the really worrying part is just how leggy we are, second to every ball, getting muscled off it etc.

Think the full-backs have been especially bad, deer in headlights every time. Has Ballantyne found a blue and white shirt with the ball yet?

That was rotten. Falkirk are one of the best sides in the league and we're very poor without Wilson and a striker. Put this one down to their better squad and our injuries and we go again.

Well beaten in the end, got a bit better second half but don't think their goalkeeper had to make a save.

Three games in less than a week is always a big ask and even more so missing Wilson and having no recognised striker.

Shaw was probably the only who looked likely to do something but other than that we offered nothing.

Nice to see Corr back after a long spell out and well done to Gillespie on making 100 appearances.

Really missed Wilson and a focal point up front tonight. Falkirk thoroughly deserved that win and I couldn't believe how much Ballantyne and Delaney struggled for the majority of the 1st half. Second half we were better. Lyall was terrific again.

As an aside I can't understand why guys come to games and howl abuse and negativity for 90 minutes. Would also have expected a bit more patience and reason from some taking into account how well we have done recently and the team we were up against.

There's a storm on the horizon

And for that I can't see the sun

For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement

For the ice cream van to come

Ali Crawford hide and seek champion.

Weird choice of player to criticise when we were already beat. Davies and Shaw (who was ok on the ball) continued a lot less and covered a lot less ground than him.

Unsure why Imrie didn't put Reynolds wide where for longer where pace works.

It's hard to criticise individual players after that - lots of stiff looking legs out there tonight, coupled with some sharp opposition.

Not sure about Imrie’s tactics though. Another general-purpose forward instead of adding e.g. Gillespie or Crawford to the midfield? A good result may not have been on the cards in any case, but the overall performance was bordering on the pathetic at times.

Bit of perspective needed from some. 1st defeat in 12 games, to the league leaders who are clearly a very good side, both strikers out, alongside our most important player, Wilson. Then add in the three games in 6 days.

We’ve given ourselves a nice gap to 9th and if we keep grinding out results from those around us then we will be Ok. If there was a problem over the last week, it was only picking up a point v Airdrie. But 4 points from this week is fine enough.

Stuparevic confirmed out for the season apparently. If we can get another loan striker in next week then that would be great. We cannot rely on Davies as our main striker as he is absolutely hopeless. A contender to be in the Worst Morton XI of the Decade.

The big game is away to Dunfermline next week. I’d rotate the squad a bit and give some of the starters from the last week a rest for Tuesday night against Livi.

The drive home has calmed me down.

Badly missed Wilson and Adeloye. The first half was one way traffic with a decent first goal (which had been coming) but we were badly carved open for the second. Our players were about 5 yards slower than Falkirk's. We needed to play the first half the way we played the second to have stood a chance of getting anything from that. Damage was done by the break - no way they were losing two goals.

Their keeper would have been as well spending the game in the pub.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Their keeper was pretty poor. Spilled the ball several times but we had no strikers to take advantage.

That game was lost in the first quarter. Subs improved us but injuries meant we just couldn’t score in a brothel. We looked exhausted and pedestrian and no wonder. Having the game moved to the Friday was a killer that we didn’t need.

Thought Lyall did well and Moffat too when he came on. Mullin no chance with the goals. But we looked slow in thought and deed. Can grind out results against every team in the league but that lot can just outspend us by too much.

Well all good things must come to an end. Thought we gave Falkirk far too much space and respect the first 30 mins, as if we were playing a top premiership side. However, we did also look tired early on and that’s what 3 games in 7 days can do. Obviously had nothing up top all evening either. Nevertheless a disappointing evening against a decent Falkirk side who punished us and really didn’t have to get out of 2nd gear.

Lyall had another decent game imo. I very much doubt he will with us next season, someone will surely take a punt on him. Not sure Imrie got it right by playing Reynolds through the middle from the off. He has been effective in recent outings by coming on out wide, although Davies did not excatly fill himself with glory when the system changed either.

We really need our wide players to start taking fullbacks on a instead of passing the ball back and being safe.

Agreed that this is missing from our general play, but both fullbacks look a little worse for wear at the moment. A lot of our problems last night were just basic pace and positioning stuff.
