United States Holiday

Thinking a week in NYC, and a week somewhere else like Philadelphia could be an option, or a week in NYC and a few days here and there elsewhere.

I really just want to ditch my pals and walk about Philadelphia doing this for a day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z2DtNW79sQ

I suppose the thing with July 4th is you mind find accommodation tough to come by, or at least very expensive.

I've done a tour of the West coast (LA - San Diego - Palm Springs - Vegas - San Francisco - Carmel - back to LA) and the East coast (NY - Washington - Boston - Cape Cod - Virginia Beach), and both are excellent. As with above, given your age and that I'd suggest NY with a couple of days in Washington if you want to soak in some history, or Jersey/Virginia if you want to show off your new abs on the beach volleyball court.

I have seen a lot of the US and I would be with Dave Edwards that California gives the opportunity to see such a lot in a shortish time scale. You could combine that with a couple days in NY at the start or end which allows flying from Glasgow to Newark and then an ongoing flight to California.

One qualification is that to really enjoy a US holiday, you need a car. There are some city breaks like NY where it's not necessary but most places it is.

I'd actually wait a while before getting it, 3 or 4 months before you go, just to be safe.

Phil.

You get an instant response in most cases or within 72 hours, so no need to do it until you are ready to book.

P.S. New York, you can't possibly get bored.

It really depends on what you want out of the holiday and who you are going with.

We done a driving tour of California a few years ago (start at San Francisco, drive to Yosemite, down to LA (you could stop off at the Six Flags theme park if that's your thing) and onto San Diego) and it was brilliant. But if you're wanting a drink fuelled few weeks then a driving holiday maybe isn't the best idea...

Las Vegas is brilliant, but as The Bewilderedbeast says above, 3 or 4 days would do it then move on (think LA is about a 2 hour flight or something like that).

New York is an amazing place too, plenty to see and do and probably the quickest flight time too.

An alternative to New York is Toronto and Niagara Falls. Toronto is like a really friendly, smaller and cleaner New York and Niagara Falls is like a good version of Blackpool.

Don’t go to Montreal though, really nice city with ignorant arseholes everywhere.

Las Vegas is probably 40C+ in July also.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

A couple of days in Vegas was more than enough for me. The best drive through California I have done was

A couple of days in San Francisco

SF to Lake Tahoe 5 days there doing Squaw valley, Reno etc. If you want to do Casinos, South Lake Tahoe and Reno have plenty

Lake Tahoe to Yosemite down the inland road - Big Sur is overrated. Everyone should see Yosemite in their lifetime!

Yosemite - LA for a few days doing Disney, Universal Studios, Queen Mary etc.

LA - San Diego one of the nicest cities in the US.

Back to LAX for flights home

That takes about 3 weeks to do right but it's a memory of a lifetime trip

If you're going during the summer make sure you take in some baseball...wherever you are. I have thoughts, if I can make the time, of spending a few weeks in the summer following the Yankees and seeing a bit of the country.  That would be the business imho.

I'd echo the quote above. If you're looking to cover some distance you will absolutely need a car.  In NYC you can take the subway or walk pretty much anywhere but that won't be a great option elsewhere, even in places like Miami (or Florida, generally).

I've never been to the West coast so my experiences are somewhat limited.  Miami is good - though I prefer the gulf coast of Florida. However, I can't see past NYC.

Looking in to the possibility of going to the US next summer for a couple of weeks. I know folk on here will have been before, so I'm looking for some ideas on where to actually go.

We've looked at Miami and NYC, anywhere else we should be considering? Bearing in mind we're all about 21.

Give me a shout Deeg, I'll hook you up in CA  B)

Cheers for the great holiday ideas guys.

Deego - pretty sure you need to be 25 to hire a car in the US if you are a foreigner, worth checking out

It's over 21 now. Although drivers between 21 and 25 have to pay a daily premium, except with Alamo, who have a young drivers package at no extra cost as long as you pre-book.

Any considering a US driving holiday I would advise to arrange your top up (collision damage waiver etc) insurance cover for your car hire here before you go.  The car rental companies always rip you off n that respect.

Another destination to consider is Western Canada.  I have done a loop a couple of times, starting in Vancouver which is itself a lovely city and then doing a circular tour through the Rockies taking in Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, Whistler, Victoria, etc., and finally back to Vancouver.  Possibly the most stunning scenery anywhere.

i've only been out there one time, but i would recommend california as well. it really does offer a nice variety. the weather over the summer is quite pleasant as well. especially compared to the east coast where it can be absolutely boiling hot. that being said, once you start going into the desert, it's a different story.

new york is an extraordinary place, but a visit to new york alone isn't really a proper visit to the us. even for most americans going there is like going to another country.

Looks like we're set on the west coast. We've spoke about San Diego, LA, Palm Springs, Vegas, Yosemite and San Francisco. Death Valley looks fairly inviting too, although I think I'll be on my own on that one. Drew's pretty keen on driving it, I think. Looks like it'll be 1st June - 16th June we'll be going because of Jordan's work dates. Although if I can find a way of not actually coming back that would be ideal also.

I'll give you a phone tomorrow night to pick your brain if you're free? Think we'll be booking flights as early as Saturday.

Cheers! Are you permanent out there now?

Cheers for the replies everyone.
