Of the keepers I've seen, Baines, no doubt about it. In saying that, he had some defence in front of him....

Baines, Hayes, Holmes, McLaughlin, Orr......blah blah blah. To this day the best defensive unit I've seen as a Morton Supporter. Wish we had fullbacks even half as good as Hayes and Holmes now.

Thanks for all the good reading on being ok with Morton as a goalie yours in sport Roy Baines

A pleasure Roy, and very well deserved.

I remember as a kid, must have been about 11, getting an all blue goalie's kit, just like yours of the time. B)

You and your fellow players of that era will always be heroes of mine !!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to have you both for dinner

Roy Baines was terrific for us, and in my life time of watchiing the ton is probably the best.

I also have a special space in my memories for Murray McDermott. He too was a wonderful big bloke. Very soflty spoken and the mainstay and possibly the main reason we got out of the first division in 1984. his trademark saves tended to be flying one handed "supermanesque" ones.

I also remember he produced one against Celtic in the Premier when we beat them 2-1.

Sadly the big fella died from cancer in March 2003 aged a mere 53 years of age.

Shamefully the club elected not to mark his passing.

Anyone mind Dave Brcic the American guy who came to Cappielow in the 80's for a while. Great goalie who made his debut up at Aberdeen and saved a penalty.

When you think back to some of our old goalies like Roy Baines, Dennis Connaghan, Jimmy Cowan and Wylie to name a few, we've had some cracking goalies.

Roy Baines was my era and still think to this date he was brilliant.

i remember david brcic well was great keeper few good penalty saves in his time there arrived with a colored chap from new york cosmos called mark antonio i think ,got his autograph on a programme somewhere ,roy baines was good in his own right too

He was an excellent keeper. From my youth til about 10 years ago we were blessed with great goalkeepers, Maxwell being the last. McGurn had/has potential but he's still very raw and I suspect he was hung out to dry.

MARTY OUT!!!!!

I always thought Brcic was a great keeper too..... until I saw him at the begining of the year on 'The Big Match Revisited' in the 2-2 draw with Thistle in February 1979 and he was, frankly, woeful.

Anyway he only played a handful of games for us - hardly qualfies him among the 'favourite goalies of all time'.

seen him play one of his first games for the ton at the old fir park motherwell. lost two goals from two simple crossed balls in the box from a guy who had played for the well for years called joe wark. we won 3-2 but bricic was rubbish the whole game. i think the fact that he was american that fans thought he was such a good keeper when really he was not. & he was the first american to play at cappielow. or was he??

I think your memory is being very kind to him Dave, he only played a handful of games (6 or so) and as far as I can remember he only saved one penalty in that time, though I could be wrong there.

The other American who came at the same time was Ron Atanasio and as far as I remember he never got a game in the first team. I remember seeing him a couple of times in the reserves and he was mince.
