A Reid diving header in the opening minute was cancelled out shortly after, but by half time we were somehow 3-1 up with the home fans seething and calling for Ally McLeod's head. Made it hard for ourselves in the 2nd half, thanks to the often-seen "go out and just hold onto what you have" tactic. Was funny to see every pass back to Wylie being played very wide - just in case..... 1987 - Morton 1-2 Heart of Midlothian (McNeil pen) Sandy Jardine came on as a late sub for Hearts and was treated with choruses of "cheat cheat" at every touch. AyrshireTon
September 7th - 2008 - Queen of the South 0-2 Morton (Wake, McGuffie) League Challenge Cup. http://youtu.be/y5N0gELGL5o 2003 - Morton 2-3 St. Mirren a.e.t (Bannerman, Hopkin) League Cup. A sore one. 2-0 up at HT thanks to a long range smash from Scott and then Davie getting on the end of low cross, they rallied after the break and forced extra time. On came fat Yardley looking a right sight - unfortunately he rolled past our tiring defence and scored a late winner. Off to the pub to then find Scotland losing to the Faroes. 1996 - Morton 0-0 East Fife 1991 - Morton 3-0 Dundee (Collins, Rafferty, Mathie) After losing 7-1 at home to Clydebank a bit of pride is restored with this win over title favourites Dundee. TorontoTon
Another full-length report from my dad’s diary (age 15) from the away game at P**sley, as table-topping Morton took on St Midden 74 years ago on Sep 9, 1944: 3rd League Trophy match away, at Love StreetSt Mirren (2) 2 – 2 (0) MortonScorers: Crum, Orr Team: Johnstone, Higgins, Westwater, Campbell, Aird, Whyte, Henderson, Orr, Crum, Garth, McInnes. Took a return ticket to Paisley for the St Mirren v Morton county ‘derby’. Very unexpectedly met by Gordon (a lifelong friend) as am queuing up! Morton played away from Greenock in the first half. Saints started strongly, violent play with immediate tackling upsets the Morton attack, whose balance is the secret of previous successes. Garth was the first Mortonian to shoot, but his shot from well out sailed over the bar. Next, Orr had a header from a slow cross into the goalmouth by McInnes, but that also went over the bar. Johnstone was lucky to find his knee in the way of a shot from Linwood from close in, after a St Mirren break away. Stenhouse, the St Mirren inside right, opened the scoring with a header from a cross from the left, which found the upper left corner with Johnstone unsighted. Linwood then sent one close by the post from well out. Morton responded and Orr sent a header past the post from a McInnes cross, and Henderson shot over the bar. Linwood was offside from a would-be break, and then Newlands in the St Mirren goal nicely clutched a McInnes lob. McInnes sent another effort over the bar from a Crum pass, with Linwood then doing the same at the other end. Morton had a nice move via Henderson and Garth to Crum, who shoots just past the upright. Orr heads just over the bar from a Henderson corner. Campbell, waiting on the Morton goal-line, dashed out to save a dangerous situation with Johnstone on the ground. Two McInnes corners failed to produce any effect, and Aird tries one from far out that goes far over the bar. Linwood then taps just over the bar with only Johnstone to beat, in an open break. Just before half-time, St Mirren went two up when A.N.Other (an un-named junior called up for big match experience, a common occurrence at the time) took a cross from the left and shot towards goal. Westwater gallantly chested out the first effort, but could not prevent the rebound going in from three yards out. Another wild Garth try marked the opening of the second half. Orr sent the ball just past the left angle of post and cross bar from a cross from the right. A lowish McInnes cross to Orr is just headed past with Orr diving at 45 degrees. Morton are now well on top and continue pressing, with inspired defending by Aird suppressing any St Mirren chances. Orr sends a shot well over the bar from a break-away with Telfer almost on him. McInnes then returned Crum’s cross and CRUM shoots home high to the right of the goalkeeper. Murdoch and Linwood then shot respectively high and wide for St Mirren, before Crum had a would-be scoring shot just tipped over the bar by Newlands for the game’s best save. Whyte then slammed one just past the post, before ORR scores in a goalmouth scramble with McInnes having set up the chance. Scrappy but forcing and dangerous play to both goals marked the remaining minutes before the final whistle blew. Best Morton player: Campbell.
