You don't seem happy, what with your swearing and personal insults.

I'm not in the least bit offended personally as I'm not Asian, but I still don't think he should have said it.

Are you a moderator? Thats beermonkey and now me.

You seem to have difficulty allowing people to vent what they feel without asking if they are angry or accusing of flinging personal insults around.

How the f*** would you know if he is happy or not? How would you know if he is just on a piss-take, on the wind up, or sincere?

BTW, It was me who called you a fanny

Once again, it's down to intent. As it happens I don't actually think he used the term with malicious intent, though of course only he himself will know that for sure.

But as I said before, whether he likes it or not he's not a normal squaddy as everything he says and does will come under scrutiny and have international diplomatic and political repercussions.

So for him to use a term that's commonly used as a racial slur, even if that wasn't his intent, was foolish to say the least.

And as for 'getting off high horses' I think that applies more to those defending him rather than those criticising him, as that's where all the anger seems to be coming from.

I would rather hang the c***.

You're absolutely correct, Beermonkey, I do apologise.

This seems to be the problem here - I wouldn't say that it's COMMONLY used as a racial slur. It's OCCASIONALLY used as a racial slur. Those who use it as a racial slur should be condemned, but in the boy Windsor's case it was certainly not used as a racial slur.

If things don't change, they'll stay the way they are.

C'mon big man, you're splitting hairs here.

Whether it 'commonly' or 'occasionally' used as a racial slur is neither here nor there, a guy in his position shouldn't use it in the first place to avoid getting into this whole discussion.

And how can you possibly state categorically that he didn't mean it as a racial slur, only he knows that. Are you a mind reader?

Cant state it categorically, but can make an informed guess having heard the context in which it was said, and having had 10 years in the armed forces I know how things are, or at least how they were whan I was in.

Exactly my point big man.

I happen to agree with you that he probably didn't mean it as a racial slur, but simply by using it he's raised the possibility and opened a whole can of worms. That's the risk anyone takes when they use a racial slur, though of course in his case the implications are multiplied by a million.

I'm surprised you can't see that, to be honest.

I CAN see that, and agree that he would have been better off not saying it. I just find it pittyful and annoying that there are these people who want him booted out of the Army for this. It's the PC brigade that actually cause these problems in the first place. Them, and those who are just looking for any excuse to throw their arms up in the air and cry wolf at the slightest wee thing.

I was brought up to use peoples names. I don't see the point in calling a group by a name. In fact, only an idiot would generalise in this way.

As for Harry's paternity, he's definitely Charles' son. Look at a picture of him and his brother together. They are very alike.

Sorry big man, that's utter pish.

It's the people who use these terms as racial insults that cause these problems.

Again - I can agree with that - if it's used as a racial insult then it's way out of order, but in this case it wasn't (as far as i can see). But the PC mob don't help by scrutinising each and every word that is said regardless of context.

Again big man, I think you're hitting out at the wrong target by venting your anger and frustrations at the 'PC Brigade' (whoever the f*** they are) and not the racists themselves.

It is dying out though, as Donga pointed out it's a generational thing. Most folk above 50 or so still use it,

Watch it, Edwards and I will not be happy bunnies, your thoughtless ageism is most disturbing.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences."
