AyrshireTon
August 18th - 1954 - Morton 5-2 Arbroath (Gourlay, Linwood 2, Lewis, Orr) League Cup group stage. 1951 - Celtic 2-0 Morton League Cup group stage. 1948 - Morton 2-1 Partick Thistle (Orr pen, Farquhar) 1945 - Motherwell 2-1 Morton Scottish Southern League 1934 - East Fife 1-0 Morton 1931 - Rangers 7-3 Morton (Black 2, Banks) 1928 - Armadale 1-3 Morton 1923 - St. Mirren 3-1 Morton (Buchanan) 1920 - Ayr United 0-2 Morton (Thom, Stevenson) 1917 - Partick Thistle 3-3 Morton (Gourlay, Lister, Seymour pen) 1906 - Morton 3-0 Queen's Park 1900 - Morton 2-3 Celtic (J Oswald, Pearson) Other sources list two different scorers, the report below has Pearson scoring both. And we let Provost Black take the kick-off - "under a burning sun". McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie. AyrshireTon
AT, was there any relationship between the Gourlay of the 20's and the Gourlay of the 50's? I've often wondered that. Jimmy Gourlay's dad (also Jimmy) and uncle played football for Annbank, as did his brother. Can't find any link between him and the Robert Gourlay of the 50s, but there is mention of "other football relatives" of Jimmy Snr, but without mentioning names. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. AyrshireTon
Jimmy Gourlay was first team coach in the 50s wasn't he? An Everton article says he was Trainer at Morton until 1959 when he retired. That would likely mean coach, although "trainer" used to also mean the physio. TorontoTon
A fairly extensive report for a game on Aug 19, 1944 from my dad's diary:1st League Trophy match, at Cappielow ParkMorton (2)3 - 2(1) HibernianScorers: Lindsay, Whyte, Kelly. Team: Johnstone, Higgins, Highet, Campbell, Aird, Whyte, Crum, Garth, Lindsay, Walsh, Kelly. The UG Pipe & Drum band entertained and the Morton team had their pictures taken before the game. Morton kicked toward Port Glasgow in the 1st half. Hibs were on the offensive at the start and Johnstone had to move to prevent a run-through score on more than one occasion. Lindsay received and brought up a well-placed lob but had to shoot from too far for effect. A long effort from Heane for Hibs was tipped over the bar and followed up by an ineffective corner from Caskie. The first goal came on 8 minutes when Kelly outmanoeuvered Shaw and sent a spinning cross into the goalmouth that Hibs keeper Downie failed to grasp. LINDSAY for the 'Ton bulged the top of the net with his shot from two yards out! Hibs soon equalized when Caskie got away and sent a well-placed through-pass to a poorly-marked Rogers who raced through and scored with a low shot to the left-hand corner, Johnstone unable to reach it. The Hibs inside trio now had many chances but they missed 'em rather badly, and no second chances, Johnstone safe in the Morton goal. End-to-end play followed with Crum and Lindsay missing narrowly for Morton. Baxter started fouling for Hibs, and one of those fouls led to Morton re-taking the lead, when WHITE's free kick just outside the area was diverted into the goal off a Hibs defender that was part of the 'barrier' (defensive wall). Morton started the 2nd half strongly and had tough luck in their finishing. Hibs retaliated strongly but the Morton defence was always there. The best Hibs player in this period was Smith, and it was one of his crosses that almost sneaked in off Campbell, Johnstone having to smother quickly. The Morton forward line had now attained better understanding, and Crum and Garth had nice tries before Lindsay received a ball from the Morton half, beat 2 men and had his shot blocked. However the ball then diverted to KELLY who raced in and sent in a special of his from almost on the goal-line. 3-1 to the 'Ton! Hibs returned very strongly and both goals had further narrow escapes before the game's last goal came to Hibs. Gordon Smith broke away and sent in a long cross which Johnstone could not prevent going to Caskie, who lifted it to head height for Bogan to score with a header to the top-left corner. Further desperate play led to nothing, and the final whistle blew.

Behind whilst many of us were still coming into the ground, we got level before the break. Hopkin later gave us the lead with a scorcher of a free kick. It was 2-2 in injury time when Rowan Alexander scored into the postage stamp from the edge of the box. The #scenes were stopped by an offside flag (not against Alexander) which brought McGraw out onto the pitch to lecture the referee after full time. A penalty each in extra time saw us minutes away from a shoot-out when they scored a low header. 1985 - Morton 2-2 Dunfermline a.e.t (Robertson, Anderson) Morton won 4-3 on penalties.
