TorontoTon
Fantastic reports from so many new year's day games! Nice one AyrshireTon! Wish I could say that my dad was at the 1943 game to share a report of that 8-0 win. But he was at least at the 1945 game, which with a makeshift team was almost as satisfying a win: January 1, 1945: 10th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock Greenock Morton (2) 3 – 0 (0) St. Mirren Scorers: Kelly, Whyte, McInnes Team: McFeat, Higgins, Fyfe, Frazer, Aird, Campbell, (Junior player), Walsh, Whyte, Kelly, McInnes.Fail to find on bus notices when game starts. Friend Duggie was however right about it being a 2pm kick-off. Longish wait in the queue to get in, and then another wait for kick-off, with no band playing. Many team changes from the game at Partick 2 days ago – McFeat in goal, Frazer at R.H., a junior player at O.R., Kelly at I.L., Whyte at C.F. and McInnes O.L. The game started 10 minutes late as manager Davies struggled to concoct this team in time for the kick-off. Morton played towards Port Glasgow in the first half on a very muddy Cappielow pitch. The first incident of note was when a free-kick was awarded to Morton a few yards from the right angle of the penalty box. Frazer smashed it high up to the inside (right) post for St Mirren ‘keeper Newlands to parry the ball up into the air and safely catch the rebound, before clearing. Higgins, on the halfway line, got the ball soon after this and with a strong kick sent the ball right into the penalty box. After a mix-up in the St Mirren defence, KELLY sent a strong shot inside the left-hand post about two feet off the ground from the centre of the area, to give Morton the lead. Walsh then sent a low cross over from the right, but neither Whyte nor McInnes managed to reach it. Linwood for St Mirren swept all opposition before him and behind him on the right wing, before sending a powerful cross to the right of the Morton penalty area, where two St Mirren forwards were waiting. Higgins however intercepted the ball and conceded a corner over the right bye-line, being slightly stunned by the force of the crossed-ball that he managed to head away. From a short clearance from this corner, Teddy McHume for St Mirren came back and sent a powerful shot to the top left corner, but McFeat somehow managed to reach it and, without falling, subsequently clear the ball. Walsh next has a break from the break and shoots as the ‘keeper arrives, but the ball just rolls past the left-hand post. Moffat on the left goal-line for St Mirren gives it to the unmarked G. Hunter five yards out and in front of goal, but he sends his shot over the left angle of post and bar. Walsh shoots onto the near side-netting from the edge of the penalty area. Soon after Jimmy WHYTE taps the ball home at the near post from a cross by the junior playing at outside right. Walsh has another similar break but again misses in like manner. A. Hunter for St Mirren sends a pass/shot right across goal with no takers, before G. Hunter’s shot onto the right angle of post and bar is cleared from the rebound to Higgins by Archie McFeat. Higgins concedes a corner, but nothing comes of it and that was the last action of the first half. HT: Morton 2-0 St. MirrenThe second half started with Whyte opening up the St Mirren defence and passing through to the junior player on the right-hand side of the St Mirren penalty area. Instead of shooting, the junior player sensibly passes across the area to MCINNES, who traps the ball and then fires home at the left-hand post to give Morton a three-goal lead. St Mirren ‘keeper Newlands then stops a Fyfe free-kick with his stomach, the bounce-up from this then starting a longish siege. This was broken when Linwood got clear, but his shot flew over the Morton bar from only seven yards out. McFeat then safely held a long low try by Lindsay, and the Morton ‘keeper also palmed away a longish-low shot to the left corner by Linwood. Whyte’s swinging shot from a Walsh pass was then just held by Newlands, and that was the last action of the game. Best Morton player: Campbell. Referee: Calder. AyrshireTon
The 2013 Dumbarton game, there was a bigger crowd to see us at Cappielow 4 days beforehand, and we won. Correct The visiting Pars crowd compared to a struggling Dumbarton may have contributed too. That win did draw more attention on us (there were a few more from our usual group came to the Dumbarton game) but in true Morton fashion we fell flat. TorontoTon
And here's another report from early 1945 - this was the third game the team played in four days, quite the schedule when the typical fixtures were Saturday afternoons only. January 2, 1945: 11th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock Greenock Morton (1) 3 – 0 (0) Albion Rovers Scorers: Fyfe, Campbell, Westbrook. Team: McFeat, Higgins, Fyfe, Frazer, Aird, Campbell, Adams, Westbrook, Lindsay, McAloon, Kelly. Morton played with the wind and towards Port Glasgow in the first half. Mudie for Albion starts the game off with a break on the left, and hits the crossbar with a sharp shot, Aird clearing the rebound. A free kick on the penalty line to the right of the goal hits Aird in the wall, and the ensuing siege was eventually cleared. Aird has a free a few yards outside the right corner of the penalty box, but the keeper gets to the ball in time. Mudie shows his trickiness in two tries from crosses from both wings, but Aird intercepts safely each time. Westbrook then has a refreshing long try which goes just a few feet past the left post. Mudie has another break, this time to the right of the goal. He goes closer in before shooting, but hits the underside of the bar and McFeat, despite being on the ground, manages to turn and gather the rebound. A long, in-swinging Kelly shot then goes just by at the right post, with Rovers' goalkeeper Pidgeon beaten. Westbrook again sends a shot past the far left post, before getting a better shot in that almost beats the 'keeper low to the right of the goal. There was then a break for Albion, but a McIlhatton shot was easily taken by McFeat at chest height to the right of the goal. A Fyfe free kick hits the tough defender Savage in the wall, but a second FYFE free kick on the extreme right halfway line goes over the 'keeper and into the net, with McAloon and Westbrook challenging for the ball.HT: Morton 1-0 Albion RoversMcAloon has an individual run along the left touch-line from a Kelly pass, and his pass to Lindsay directly in front of goal is ridiculously returned, the ball going for a goal-kick with McAloon by then on the ground. A movement initiated by Adams sends the ball from the right to McAloon directly in front of goal, and he sensibly taps the ball back for CAMPBELL to wham the ball into the top right corner of the net. Yet another Fyfe free kick, this time on the far left, is calmly headed away for a fruitless corner by Savage. A Frazer free sees a creditable header attempt by Lindsay, which is parried by Pidgeon to McAloon, whose soft tap to the left corner is diverted by the keeper to Savage, who clears. WESTBROOK then puts Morton three up, scoring at the low left corner after the ball comes to him from a goalmouth scramble. Two further scrambles in the Rovers goalmouth see Pidgeon palm the only Lindsay shot of the game out across the goal to Kelly, who can only shoot directly at Savage in the middle of the goal. That was the final action of the game. Despite the win, the re-arranged forward line of Adams, Westbrook, Lindsay, McAloon and Kelly did poorly. Best Morton player: McFeat. AyrshireTon
January 3rd - 2015 - Morton 0-1 Airdrieonians 2009 - Morton 2-2 Queen of the South (Weatherson 2) 2005 - Ayr United 2-1 Morton (Walker) 2004 - Dumbarton 1-0 Morton Our first defeat in three months. We'd not win a league game again for another two. Our next trip to Dumbarton would be a real shame game affair. 2000 - St. Mirren 1-1 Morton (Hartley) The linesman flagged their goal offside (McGarry was standing near Ally Maxwell) and we all got up and started the GIRFUY stuff, only to see that the referee had awarded it. Much protesting followed, to no avail. Hartley ran straight to the North Bank to celebrate his goal. Harry Curran had a late effort cleared off the line. http://youtu.be/dTb-wSzaCmE 1990 - Morton 2-2 Clydebank (Alexander, McGraw) 1989 - Clydebank 1-1 Morton (Turner pen) 1983 - Morton 3-0 Kilmarnock (Rooney, McNab, Hutchison) 1982 - St. Mirren 3-1 Morton (Houston) McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
