The Taliban's Big Brave Soldiers

The trouble with most countries with a "stan" at the end of their name is that in lots of them, large swathes of the population still live in essentially medieval times with medieval outlooks on life. They interpret their religion literally and if their perverted view of Islam means an 11 year old girl needs to be shot because she wants an education, thats OK.

I would like to think that if the perpetrators go to their heaven, Allah will cut the balls off them and send them straight to the Islamic equivalent of hell. I wonder where it says in the Koran that the shooting of a wee lassie is anything less than a disgusting and sickening criminal act?

She was 14 and it was a despicable act. But don't let your bigotry and intolerance get in the way of constructing a logical argument. Taliban are a scum minority. But they are a scum minority with big guns. The big guns allow them to keep poor uneducated people in a position of servitude. If only the large swathes of the population could rid themselves of the taliban.

Remind me when we introduced universal suffrage? I'm sure it was post-medieval.

She was not shot because she was "too western" she was shot because she stood up to an oppressive millitant regime. Hopefully all of Pakistan will take to her and her cause and rid their country of these power hungry nutters who use their twisted concept of Islam as a front to terrorise people.

Ah bless: casual racism because you can get away with it. What a nasty piece of work you are.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Firstly re the age of the girl, I got that wrong. She was apparently 11 when she started her blog. I am not quite sure why getting her age wrong matters in the context of what I was saying or why stating facts amounts to bigotry or intolerance? Nowhere did I criticise Islam as such.

Look, I will bow to your first hand knowledge of what goes on on the ground in these countries and I don't doubt that many/most of the ordinary folk detest the Taliban but when you look at how country people live in the places I refer to, many of them live in what I would call medieval conditions. That just seems to be a fact to me. the Taliban did not just happen. They are a product of conditions existing in the country and thats where they have picked up their religious beliefs which in terms of intolerance to any deviation therefrom, is right up there with the inquisition. And there seems to be plenty of them!

Universal suffrage in this country did indeed come late in the sense of women getting the vote. I would like to think though that we have no history of killing wee girls because they wanted an education. Not for hundreds of years anyway.

I have no more feeling against Islam than any other mainstream religion and for me, one religious fanatic is much like another.

Where do you get racist from that comment?

Your sweeping description of hundreds of millions of people as being 'medieval' for a start.

What evidence did you have to support this accusation? Do the Taliban have a hundred million members?

So: casual racism it is.

And as for nasty individuals, pots and kettles and all that.

There was a quote on the news this morning that she was too pro western ideals and in the same spot they said that the Taliban had said if she survives being shot, they will come back and finish the job. I accept though that everything you have said is correct also.

Gay marriage here springs to mind!

That's a ridiculous analogy. We're talking here about a young girl being shot.

It might have been a categorisation but it was certainly not intended to be a racist categorisation. It is however, a statement of fact that in many of the countries referred to, people live in conditions last seen in the Western world hundreds of years ago. I am not sure how many houses in the Western world are constructed from mud and straw bricks, for example!

I must admit I didn't expect such ill considered nonsense from you.

That's about the size of it, be it conscious or unconscious.

Sweeping generalities based on extremist views and a ludicrous 'ending with 'stan' definition tend to achieve that as a rule.

Is the term 'medieval' applicable to living conditions? What denotes 'non-medieval' living conditions, and why are they relevant to this case?

Try this link for what, evidence that Afghanistan is in fact not a medieval society?

Presumably you'll be peddling Pakistan next in your 'list of countries that end in 'stan, conveniently ending at two'
