TorontoTon
Here is a first-hand report of the loss away at Partick on December 30, 1944 – including another early appearance by Jimmy Cowan: 12th League Trophy match away, at Firhill Partick Thistle (0) 3 – 2 (1) Greenock Morton Scorers: Crum, Whyte (pen) Team: Cowan, Higgins, Fyfe, Campbell, Aird, Whyte, McInnes, McAloon, Crum, Walsh, Kelly.Morton played north and with a strong wind in the first half. The usual neat Morton work up-field sees Crum mis-kick their first chance from the edge of the penalty area. Morton’s offside tactics save Partick’s dashing forwards from scoring legitimately. Another neat work-up sees McAloon shoot low but straight at Partick ‘keeper Henderson. A McInnes snap shot then cannot be grasped by Henderson, and the ‘keeper is lucky to see the ball bounce past the far post with no Morton forwards following up. Another offside saves Morton before Cowan confidently comes out to pick up an over-strong through pass. Crum then gives to McInnes, but he sends his shot past the post by just a few inches. Husband’s free-kick for Partick from the edge of the area goes just past the far-right post, having brushed the Morton defensive wall. Nothing came of the resulting corner. A long through shot by Picken for Partick then bounces 3 yards in front and two yards to the left of Cowan, who nevertheless stops the shot with extreme athleticism. Whyte passes to Kelly and his strong snap-shot to the left of goal was neatly tipped over for another fruitless corner. A Walsh try goes past the post after good work from Crum and McInnes. After fouls by Candlin for Partick and Whyte for Morton, McAloon finds Crum but his header was easily held. A speedy Glover break for Partick sees him send a neat shot low-down, but Cowan taps it out past an in-rushing Doonan. Wild Thistle forward shooting follows, and McGeachie’s cross to Glover results in the ball being placed past the far post once more. A low McInnes corner starts a scramble with Henderson finally clearing after Candlin mis-hit an initial attempted clearance. McInnes then gives the ball to CRUM who sends home an un-touchable shot to the top right corner. Aird then purposefully misses a McGeachy low cross and Cowan just gets if after being unprepared. HT: Partick 0-1 MortonMcGeachie sends a shot across an open goal to start the second half action. McInnes has a close try but his effort toward a seemingly open goal is palmed clear by Henderson. Doonan has a clear break after beating Aird and Fyfe, and Cowan can only touch his shot to McGeachie who promptly nets. A Kelly break finds Henderson who sends in a low cross-shot with Crum arriving. A Whyte free on the left lets McInnes send a zoomer over the centre of the cross-bar. A Kelly break is ended with a trip by Smith of Partick, and WHYTE scores from the resulting penalty with a firm high shot to where the goalkeeper has been standing, to restore Morton’s lead. Cupples soon equalizes for Partick, somehow knocking the ball out of Cowan’s hands and into the net. A McAloon shot is then parried to Kelly, but his return shot flashes across the goal and misses the far post by about an inch. A nice McGeachie cross is just tipped along the goal and Doonan heads home at the far-right post to give Partick the lead. Cowan then just gathers a low try by McGeachie. A fine close shot by McInnes is then held by man-of-the-match Henderson for Partick, who also stops a Crum try from the touchline low down at his right-hand post.
