Draw had given us Celtic at home. 1998 - Morton 1-3 Hibernian (Fenwick) Prior to this game, McGraw had been trying to help Derek Colllins earn a big move to....Ayr United. AyrshireTon
December 8th - 1984 - Dundee 5-1 Morton (Robertson) 1979 - Morton 0-1 Rangers My views on this game are well known. Two games that month contained incidents which would arguably de-rail our part-time team's title challenge, and both came against the "big two". This was the first. Toby
Nothing to do with that game, as I was barely six months old at the time, but I fucking despise(d) Sandy Jardine. The thread about his death on here was quite telling about his character. C*nt.
TorontoTon
Here is a start for Dec 9th - a first-hand report regarding the home win against Airdrie on December 9, 1944: 8th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park Greenock Morton (3) 4 – 2 (0) Airdrieonians Scorers: Garth, Crum (2), McAloon Team: McFeat, Whyte, Fyfe, Frazer, Aird, Campbell, Kelly, Garth, Crum, McAloon, McInnes. Bus to Cappielow after a short wait in a very long queue. Dry day but the pitch was slippery. Morton played toward Port Glasgow in the first half. A Kelly corner was beautifully met by Crum, but his header hit the post and led only to a fruitless corner from McInnes. A free kick to Fyfe curled across the field, but Crum was beaten to it by Airdrie’s goalkeeper Moodie. Morton had an escape after McCulloch for Airdrie unexpectedly stopped the ball from going for a goal-kick. His cross to an unmarked Ferguson was sent ridiculously over the bar from only 3 yards out. An O’Sullivan whiz from the left then hit the angle of post and bar on the right of the Morton goal. A Garth run pleases before Crum skies a shot on the break to the right of the goal. Crum then has a neat flick from the left goal-line diverted onto the top netting. Morton opened the scoring after a Kelly run and Crum shot that had been blocked. The ball came to GARTH who sharply lobbed the ball back into the top left corner, Moodie able to clutch only at thin air. Airdrie almost equalised after Aird delayed his clearance and was dispossessed, Fyfe relieving the pressure from a minor siege by giving away a corner. McFeat was lucky to make two scrambled clearances during this sequence. A McAloon run and shot went too straight, and Moodie was able to gather while kneeling. The Airdrie ‘keeper then punched out a McInnes cross in fine style. Another Garth lob from the right goes past the post for a goal-kick. Garth then sends in a low through-pass from a low Kelly cross, and CRUM hits it from in front of the right post to the inside of the left post and home, with everyone standing still. Crum then sends McAloon upfield with an overhead kick and McALOON shoots home at the top right corner. O’Sullivan for Airdrie sends over a McCulloch corner to end the first half. HT: Morton 3-0 Airdrieonians A long Frazer lob goes past the post for a goal-kick to start the second half. MacDonald’s lob for Airdrie was easily held by McFeat. Aird gives away a penalty with the tripping of Ferguson. Aitken scores from the spot for Airdrie, shooting home hard and low to McFeat’s left. Whyte for Morton is then injured attempting to prevent an Aitken shot from open play. A clearance is allowed by McAloon to roll down his back, and CRUM restores Morton’s three-goal lead, running through and shooting home to the low right corner of the Airdrie goal, the bounce beating goalkeeper Moodie. Aitken pulls another one back for Airdrie, with a copycat shot to Crum’s at the other end, the bounce this time beating McFeat. Moodie then soars across the goal to stop a low shot by McInnes, and just clutches a rising shot by McAloon from a Crum pass. A Crum break results in a powerful shot being stopped by defender Brennan’s face! The Airdrie man was considerably dazed, but had the consolation of stopping another Morton goal, as the shot was well on target and had beaten the goalkeeper. Campbell then headed a McInnes corner narrowly over, and the last action of note was a Garth shot while running at speed, that flew over the visitors’ crossbar. Best Morton player: Crum Referee: J. Calder of Edinburgh
