TorontoTon
Here is a report on the defeat at Queen’s Park on January 20, 1945: 14th League Trophy match away, at Hampden Park, Glasgow Queen’s Park (1) 2 – 1 (1) Greenock Morton Scorer: McInnes Team: McFeat, Higgins, Fyfe, Aird, Blair, Campbell, Adams, Whyte, Crum, Kelly, McInnes. On a surface of two inches of firm snow, play began a bit late. Morton played away from Greenock in the first half. Pressure on the left allowed McINNES to try his luck from the edge of the penalty area, a few yards away from the bye-line. His lob neatly flew over the surprised Steadward in the Queen’s Park goal and into the far top corner of the net to give Morton an early lead. McInnes soon had a further open sight of goal but sent his shot into the side-netting. Morton then scrambled clear a Lister cross. A low McPhail shot after Blair was only able to prod clear was well held by McFeat. Both keepers then safely held low shots from Kelly for Morton and Harris for Queen’s. McInnes has another chance, but Steadward anticipates his shot well to save at the right post, two feet from the ground. McFeat holds a right touch-line free well up high in the penalty area. An Aird whiz from the right corner of the penalty area from an Adams corner just misses past the left post. McPhail then whams one over the bar for Queen’s, and Whyte has a nice try for Morton that goes just over the bar from close in. McColl stops a promising break from Adams, before Crum sends a shot just past the right post and Whyte sends another shot over the bar. A siege of the Queen’s goal follows, after Steadward tips a mis-header from defender Cross onto the bar. A Whyte try to the low right corner is anticipated and cleared along the bye-line. A Dixon cross is well held by the reliable McFeat at chest height. A nice Morton break ends in Whyte being held by three defenders. Kelly shoots wildly past the post from a Crum backheel. McInnes shoots wide from another Adams corner, and Steadward then punches another Whyte whiz to the underside of the bar and then clear. The Morton defence is becoming foulsome in stopping Queen’s counter-attacks. Whyte whams a shot onto the right angle of post and bar, and it flies twelve feet into the air, only to be palmed away for a corner on coming down. Queen’s then equalize on the stroke of half-time, J. McColl taking a free on the edge of the penalty area to the top left corner, which McFeat was unable to stop. HT: Queen’s Park 1-1 MortonWhyte too fond of getting to a good position before shooting and loses two chances. A siege of the Morton goal is eventually cleared, and then Higgins is forced into a risky goal-line kick clear. A Kelly shot is held at the low left corner, and a Crum try is beaten down by Steadward. Another Kelly try is punched clear. Neat work by Dixon for Queen’s then leads to a Harris whiz-shot to the left top corner, giving McFeat no chance. Whyte takes three poor corners, before he then fires a strong shot to the top right of the goal which is well tipped over the bar. McColl then sends one over the Queen’s bar from a pass back(!) which was Morton’s last ‘chance’ of note. Overall, Morton’s offside tactics were effective but unappreciated by the crowd. Best Morton player: Kelly Referee: J.M. Martin of Maryhill.

Seem to remember their wingers (one of them being Jimmy Robertson) giving us a torrid time of it for most of the rest of the game. 1967 - Raith Rovers 0-1 Morton (Mason) 1956 - Morton 2-5 Queen's Park (McGhee, Kelly pen) 1950 - Queen's Park 2-4 Morton (Boyd, Mochan 3) 1939 - Dunfermline 5-2 Morton Scottish Cup. This is the game which I believe may have been "doubled up" for the 1-1 league game abandoned a week or so earlier, as both are listed as 5-2 defeats yet I can find no record of the rearranged league game. 1933 - Stenhousemuir 1-0 Morton Scottish Cup. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
