btb
mate, av had this argument soooooooooo many times with the guys in ma band and it always comes to 'that's your opinion, you can have it, but ah think it's s***e! ' They were defo the first boyband, but as has been said many times before its all down to opinions Depends what you mean by boyband - they'd pretty much been able to support themselves by gigging for about two years prior to getting their record deal, and you don't get more serious than that. Initially their success was down to having a teenybopper following and yes Brian Epstein did put them in suits but they were always in control of the music, surely this is what counts, and this at a time when it was definetely not the norm - this is the main reason why I don't think they deserve the boyband tag. Their music was fresh and new, it had it's own name, Merseybeat, sure it was influenced by earlier acts and genres but what music is ever totally original. To compare them with McFly and Take That as you did in an earlier post is puerile, sure they had a teenybopper following but they were part of the musical zeitgeist for pretty much the whole of their recording career. They may not be your cup of tea musically but in every significant way they were not a boyband. Just Visiting.
Tom_McB
BtB'ss original post is bang on. The beatles have to be seen as part of the evolution of pop into rock. Some of their songs, like those of the stones, define the sixties for those of us who were there. I'm f'cked if I can be bothered typing a treatise on the significance of the albums which were often more revolutionary than evolutionary, for those who weren't there in the sixties, two great albums were released in '65, Dylan did Highway 61 revisited and the beatles released Rubber soul, Wiki clicky. A year later they released revolver. Wiki clicky 2 A year after that Sergeant Pepper. Wiki clicky 3 Three of the most influential albums in popular music in three years, not bad going. "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences."The goal of Socialism is Communism- Lenin Je ne suis pas Marxiste : K Marx

mortonjag
The Beatles success speaks for itself-they had that something extra that only comes around once in a while. Mind you I'd rather listen to the Stones (well most of the time). First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they pretend to befriend you, then you win! DongaTon
That's pretty funny, cos the majority of us would rather get kicked in the Stones rather than listen to you!
