TorontoTon
Here is a report on that defeat at home to Hamilton on February 17, 1945: 16th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock Greenock Morton (0) 1 – 2 (0) Hamilton AcademicalsScorer: McAloon Team: McFeat, Urquhart, Fyfe, Aird, Blair, Campbell, McInnes, McAloon, Crum, Whyte, Kelly.Morton played towards Greenock in the first half. A nice Kelly cross was tipped insufficiently by Crum and just went past the right post. A Whyte shot to the low left corner was covered by Accies’ ‘keeper Ryan. A fine curving Kelly cross hits the far post and cleared by the Hamilton defence in front of goal. McGurk, the Accies captain, hacks his way through but sends his shot past the left post. Morton forwards then waste an open Accies goal following a cross from the right, none willing to shoot. A fruitless McInnes corner is followed by a Hamilton lob into the Morton goalmouth and Wilson heading into the left side-netting. A Kelly shot from close in is diverted onto the top of the net for a corner. A siege of the Hamilton goalmouth follows, with Campbell eventually sending a high shot past the right post. A fine Kelly shot to the near high side was very well palmed over the bar by Ryan. Wilson then crosses into the Morton goalmouth, after drawing McFeat, and McColl rushes in to send the ball home – but the referee disallows, saying McColl handled it in! Wouldn’t ken! A McColl cross results in a Buchan header, but Archie McFeat is ready on his knees and holds it. McInnes tries a ground pass to Crum, who slides it onto the right post and out. A Jones whiz flies past the near Morton post, Whyte responding for Morton with a slam to the low right corner of the Accies’ goal, which Ryan tips away off the post for a corner. McInnes’ corner is punched clear, and a Jones whiz over the near angle of Morton’s post and bar is the final action of the first half. HT: Morton 0 – 0 Hamilton AcciesA McInnes lob onto the crossbar is tapped out by Ryan with his fist only as far as Whyte, who misses a heaven-sent chance after slipping over in the mud. A McColl free-kick on the left wing then gets past McFeat at the left post and Wilson taps the ball home from the goal-line to give Hamilton the lead. McAloon dribbles right through the Hamilton defence, but hasn’t the power in his shot to get it past Ryan, who saves on his knees. Would have been a wonder-goal. Crum and Whyte batter the ball straight at Ryan in succession.Buchan then walks through as the Morton defence don’t play to the offside whistle, homing the ball low past McFeat to the right of the Morton goal. Morton get one back after a Kelly corner from the left is met by a fine downward header from McALOON, who beats a diving Ryan at the far-right post. A longish try by Fyfe is palmed away in fine style by Ryan to concede another Kelly corner. McAloon then tries the Whyte act of trying to shoot while sitting down in the mud, but fails lamentably at the right post to end the game.Best Morton player: CampbellReferee: J.M. Martin (Maryhill) – more than mildly irregular ideas on where to position himself.
