TorontoTon
Here is a report on the Cup defeat at home to Queen’s Park on February 24, 1945: 1st Cup game (Section â€Câ€) at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock Greenock Morton (0) 0 – 2 (1) Queen’s ParkScorers: None Team: McFeat, Highet, Fyfe, Aird, Blair, Campbell, Crum, Whyte, Arthur, Garth, Kelly. Morton played towards Greenock in the first half. A Crum corner went behind the goal for a goal kick from the first Morton attack. A lob from Dixon of Queen’s Park was easily taken by McFeat near the top left angle of post and bar. Free Morton forward play then gets them somewhere, but a Kelly cross hits the side-netting of the Queen’s goal, following a cross-field break featuring Arthur and Crum. An Aird free-kick on the right touchline flies across goal and a Garth flick-header is shakily held by Queen’s goalkeeper Steadward, low down. Whyte delays shooting from another chance, and eventually puts a short curler past the left post. Garth lobs onto Arthur’s head and his attempt is held with difficulty by Steadward low to the right of the goal. A dubious break on the right by Harris of Queen’s results in a cross to the far-left post. The ball is returned to him, and he next passes to the in-rushing Aitkenhead, who homes strongly to the low right of the Morton goal, giving McFeat no chance. Harris then puts a shot over the bar from a poor position, and the same player heads yet another opportunity past the left post on a break. Highet misses his kick, but Aitkenhead can only send his resulting shot past the left Morton post. Kelly has a snap shot that hits the left post after beating two Queen’s defenders. This resulted from a corner, which was earned when Whyte forced Steadward over the bye-line with the ball. A Crum lob to the near side of goal was held by Steadward to end the action for the first half.HT: Morton 0 – 1 Queen’s ParkMorton pressure is followed by a Harris break, which ends when he sends a shot past the right post. A Fyfe free from outside of the penalty area was head-saved by Queen’s defender Caldwell, diving at full-length. Caldwell receives medical attention after such a strenuous effort to save a goal. A great 30-yard Campbell shot was palmed onto the bar by Steadward and J. McColl sends the rebound behind for a Morton corner. Garth took the corner from the right wing after he and Whyte switched. One of Garth’s unexpectedly good corners flies by the open left of the Queen’s goal, with Whyte unable to connect to what was a golden chance. Kelly lobs onto the bar for yet another Garth corner. Dixon beats three men before Fyfe dispossesses him. A Garth corner is headed just past the left post by Blair, upfield for the occasion. A MacCaulay break for Queen’s lets Harris shoot to the low right of the Morton goal, where McFeat holds well. Hodge however is then put right through on another break, and homes after hitting the right Morton post, his shot going under McFeat’s dive. Best Morton player: BlairReferee: J.R. Boyd (Denny): Idiotic gestures and usual daftness of running. Red-haired, small with cream jacket.

Trudged through deep snow to get to the Supporter's club to find out that the game was on - no snow in Forfar. Tommy Turner had a penalty saved but little else happened.
