Controversial Derby Memories

Recommended Posts

1. Season 99-00.

The last derby of the season (we had taken one point from the other 3) was at Scapa. Saint's first goal didn't seem to cross the line at the time (the linesman could not have seen it although TV showed later that it did). Much anger ensued, added to by the dismissal of Craig McPherson (I think) for a harmless tap on the ankle on Mendez from a standing position.

2. Season 99-00.

At the midden, we work our way into the box and the ball is cleared after a tackle. At the time I could have sworn that the defender's arm touched the ball. After a moment the ref notices that the linesman's flag is up. A wee chat and Underhill asks for the ball and triumphantly puts it on the spot.

STV thought it was for the tackle, but the arm clearly sweeps the ball away.

Lavety is sent off for headbutting one of our players (again, only seen by the linesman). :D

We lost 3-2. <_>

3. Season 99-00 (it was a good year for officials!)

New year game actually not postponed for once!

Saints cross the ball onto the box, it is headed out, but nodded back in to McGarry who scores. Whilst all this was going on, Yardley was ahead of play and could have shaken hands with Maxwell.

Flag went up, then down (we were cheering the offside decision whilst they were cheering the goal) and our entire team surround the linesman. Several bookings later play resumes at 1-0 skunks.

Punchline - Paul "I love scoring against St. Mirren" Hartley gets us a point with a great free-kick, and runs to their fans to celebrate.

4. Season 98-99

An injured Yardley recieves treatment and play resumes with a drop ball. Turner opts to not return the ball to us, rather unsportingly. Whilst some players point and try to tell the ref, Matheson tackles a dithering Turner and the ball breaks to Thomas, who runs up the park and scores. :D

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Jim Boag dispossessing Campbell Money (he either nicked it as Money bounced it up and down or booted it out of his hands - can't remember as I was still in primary school) to score a consolation goal (made it 2-1) in a derby at Love Street in 1987-8.
