Yeah, this might be less of an issue if we had a different type of wide player or if we were set up a bit different because Muirhead is scoring goals and has been in positions where he really should have been scoring more, so from that point of view the only issue has been his finishing could be better. But generally he's not the best at bringing others into play and joining things up. He works hard but isn't the quickest at pressing either. With the team we have and the way we're set up, we either need to do more to make up for Muirhead's weaknesses or find a solution at centre forward which helps bring other attacking players into the game more.

Hopefully Oakley will be back sooner rather than later.

Can't agree with Muirhead not being good it bringing others into play. I think he's good at that but as a team there's not really been much around him to allow it.

Not having the same people on both boards is 100% by design. People don't seem to understand the difference between fan-owned and fan-run - there is an overlap but it's not completely the same thing. Without wanting to reduce it too much, you'd want the people on the GMFC board to be first-teamers and the MCT board to be the reserves, to an extent.

Agree it needs to be separate but I think the important bit is to show where the overlap is an how the members can influence the company they essentially own.

Aye, that's what i'm saying would be a good short-term fix. Was a really good set-up.

I'd be happy with that as a permanent thing tbh. Places like https://www.boxpark.co.uk/shoreditch/ are just made up of old containers and are quite good. Suppose there's the balance of being a pub that is suitable for a couple of hours and somewhere that can make money during the week that's got a bit more facilitates.

Let's hope not for the sole sake of self promotion and a few free tickets....

Something like what cove have would be ideal in the short term. IIRC it was a portakabin style set-up.

Is cove not just a big portacabin on a bit of land so essentially the same? I had been in the pub since 12 that day and only went in after the game so memory might be playing tricks!

Never really understood the point of clickbait headlines, as surely any short term gain will be more than cancelled out by long term loss of credibility. How many fans will ever take the Tele seriously again?

It's not even the headline. There's an article about the statement and it's just wrong. It's either on purpose to sensationalise things or the journalist can't read.

The Tele should be shown the door for its fake news agenda and its reporters forced to try and fill their rag with news of 'thu joonyurs' massive clashes with 'Ardeer' and 'Finnart'. Enough is enough.

    Agreed.

The club statement in comparison to what Patrick, Falkirk, Hamilton, etc have put out this season is actually really positive and refreshing. The way the tele and their reporter has framed this is pretty ridiculous.

They shouldn't be giving that reporter time of day now or access to player interviews, etc if that's how he's wanting to spin things. Can only assume he's looking for a job with the Sun or something.

It's an excellent statement and it's very clear. It should have gone without saying, in my opinion, but people panicked so much that I guess they felt compelled to point out the obvious: we simply can't throw money we don't have at speculative signings, the manager has earned our trust, and if we're to keep the club going as a professional concern we can't be relying on an Old Firm game every season and need to build for a sustainable future.

This is going to be very tough but I trust the MCT Board and the club Board.

I don't think it should go without say tbh. It's fairly obvious we can't just throw money at players and have to stick to a pretty tight budget but when the budget gets an unexpected top up and we've previously said we're not making a loss then there's a bit of a gap to fill especially when it's clear the squad itself has big gaps.

For a team that's owned by the support then there should be a bit more transparency there. No need to go into any amount of detail but stuff at this level is ideal. There will be people that join the dots and get to what they've said and others who completely panic (or people like me in the middle!) but it's important to keep everyone on board.

If nothing else it shows a good job being done and should encourage people to get behind the whole thing.

It'd be nice to hear some detail as to what improvements are being made to the infrastructure of the club so we can draw our own conclusions as to why there's little money for players.  We're in danger of undoing a lot of the good work that's went on over the past couple of years the way things are currently unravelling.

I think that's the key point for me. It's all doom and gloom on the park after a couple of pumping and a clearly unbalanced squad but if there's good happening elsewhere then that doesn't feel as bad but there needs to be some transparency on that, moreso when it's a fan owned club.

I think he`s being quite reserved in his comments, undoubtingly has an eye on 1 or 2 loan deals come the end of the month(hopefully).

I don't think he was reserved at all. Was pretty explicit with the comments.

    Yep. Buy cheap, buy twice.

I'm not saying the current situation is ideal but I'd much rather have a space left in the squad than be lumbered with a regen for the next nine months.

    Agree with this too though.

Per the MCT announcement today, the Rangers money is earmarked for improvements of the club's core business. (Yes, putting on football games is part of the core business but I assume they're talking infrastructure etc.)

I'd like to know a bit more about that. Obviously we don't need the full ins and outs but at the end of the day MCT members essentially own the club so if things like the fan zone are works in progress it would be good to get an update rather than rumours and people just looking to see what's happened on a flattened bit of land.

There's been money spend on an apprentice scheme too which is good for the long term so a bit of publicity on how we're aiming for long term sustainability rather than short term fixes with these examples would be a good thing.

Got assume/hope that means we’re utilising loans to fill out the rest of the squad.

Didn't come across that way. I thought he was pretty clear that he was happy with the squad and options in each position and that the loan market would be to improve the squad rather than fill it out.

You can use any email address to register a Google account. It's a bit of a hassle but it doesn't necessitate a Gmail account

I think the issue is you need to be logged in and not everyone will know how or take the time do it.

There's an email address field so it would be easier all round if it was an anonymous (as opposed to need to a sign in) form and they can just validate based on what's filled in.

Here we are in late August again with an incomplete squad and hoping that a couple of deals - and better luck with injuries - will allow us to be competitive in the right half of the division.

Going forward, the issue that MCT as owners of the club has to address is whether this is genuinely sustainable. Despite the best efforts of the Scottish football authorities, we can't actually bank on an Old Firm cup tie every season. Getting out of the League Cup group itself is probably about a 1 in 3/40% shot each season. So what was the plan for this season if we didn't have any extra cup revenue - and how do we avoid being in that position in 12 months' time?

One possible answer might be greater use of youth players as there seems to be a gap between the underage squads and the first team - perhaps next season will be appropriate to bring some of them into the matchday squad. Part of the answer could involve increasing matchday revenue - though there was little progress in terms of development of the fanzone project (on the surface at least) yesterday. But addressing this needs to be a pressing task as I cannot see the current first team model working for long without it going spectacularly wrong.

There's an apprenticeship scheme with the under 18s side now where players are full time (I think) so might help with the progression over the next few years - https://www.gmfc.net/greenock-morton-launches-new-apprenticeship-programme/

It mentions on the article that MCT have increased financial contributions to the club so would be interesting to hear more about that and where the members money is going (do they see this scheme as a long term investment, etc and how it impacts the first team now - is it reducing budget so we've got that pathway over the next few years).

Same with the fan zone - I heard that some of the cup money was going to that so we've got more revenue streams long term rather than just filling up the squad but also heard it was an MCT project.

Would be good to hear a bit more about what's being done for both and how MCT are involved. Both seem to be positives so would maybe help membership numbers too.

Charlie Mulgrew’s chucked it. You’d be looking at another Nacho Novo-type in him, who’s more interested in turning up at Celtic functions and appearing on TV or podcasts than actually doing his job.

There are reasons United canned him, and I very much doubt they’re all financial.

Even if he was still interested, we can't carry two older guys at the back in the squad that don't have any pace. Cracking player in his day and would probably have taken him over Broadfoot but not for me now.

Really hope this is just rumors and nothing comes of it. In my opinion he was our player of the season last year and what he offers the team is something no one else has, first name on the team sheet very rarely injured and a really consistent performer.

You always expect if players do well for us and a bigger club comes in they will be off if we get a fee for him at least that's something but it won't replace him, right back is the priority and has been for weeks but if we lose him another midfielder is a must, Wilson is a massive downgrade and is a different player to what Crawford gives us we should be aiming to be getting better than him if we are losing our best player.

Tbf, I thought Wilson was really good for us and came on to a game. Can't see him being a like for like replacement and we have the likes of Boyd, King, McGratten and even Blues who can play in a more advanced role with Power and Gillespie sitting. Would guess Dougie sees it is cover there rather than to do what Crawford does.

I appreciate both points, but I don't understand why it's of any benefit to us to include such a paltry figure release clause in any contract negotiations. I don't really see it as protecting our assets or offering an incentive to the player.

Dare I say it, but any player at our club would be available for 6 figures, probably less for the majority. We've seen this before with Tidser under previous regimes where small release fees get leaked to the press (in Douglas Ray's case, by himself personally) and I think it just makes us look like diddies.

    Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Lower then average wages benefit us and a sell on fee benefits the player if he does well. We don't have a lot of money so need to make a contract more attractive in ways like this unfortunately.

I don't want to detract from the positivity after a cracking result on Saturday - but my moan about the inconsistent presentation of the badge last week got me thinking. I was in hospitality on Saturday, and being in the main stand gives you a real eyeopener as to how many different versions of the badge we currently use. As the photo shows, there were three different club badges on my table alone.

We've been fan-owned for near enough two years now, with comms assistance being given to the club under the Raes by MCT for near enough the same amount of time. For us to have such a haphazard and careless approach to our branding inside our own stadium this far down the line is completely unacceptable. We have a staff member and a club director who appear to be in charge of our marketing, comms and branding - why is this being allowed to happen? We have the nicest badge in Scottish football, why are we taking such a feckless approach to displaying it?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, our week-to-week comms have been excellent in the last couple of years and Gareth deserves a lot of credit for that. Social media output is consistently high quality, and I love the way that we've started using the Titan Crane as a mainstay in our branding. I'm hoping whoever is directly responsible for our branding has a plan to get this sorted, and quickly.

    @Deegowill be loving this.

We've have a full time marketing guy from around February. I'd be hoping his job is looking at branding, target markets, etc rather than the day to day which seems to have been in hand for the last year or so. Not too sure if he's done much so far but would like to think so.

Was also quite disappointing to see hospitality was only half full for the first game of the season.

Very solid signing on paper. Probably an upgrade on Gillespie and a bit of a hard bastard which our midfield lacks at the moment.

I've seen a few people say that. I think Gillespie has a lot to offer on his day so would see it more as an alternative than an upgrade. Good signing though and if we can get a defender in the squad is looking in decent shape and Imrie has a lot of options in how we set up.

Noticed Steve Lawson (former Hamilton and Livi) is still without a club, plays at RB and CDM. Might be worth a punt, versatile and has played in the league previously. Would imagine Imrie knows him from his time at Livingston.

Martindale was saying he needs to get rid of one or two to bring in a forward and Brandon hasn't beem starting. I'd imagine that's two of the targets.

Is there? Can’t they all share frustration at not being able to bring in everyone they may wish to, while also sharing the understanding of the financial reality? Even if there has been some butting of heads that’s unlikely to be anything out of the ordinary in football.

What do you want someone to clear up exactly? Whether or not there’s been cross words exchanged behind the scenes? To address every rumour going, unsubstantiated or otherwise?

It's always good to hear about what's going on behind the scenes. A high level update about things goes a long way. The biggest issue for me is we're fan owned, people are putting a lot of money in and there's not really any update from the business side (or MCT for that matter).

Obviously they aren't going to talk about individual disputes but an assurance that there's budget there, etc helps give a bit more confidence in things and stop rumours from growing arms and legs.
