Came on as a sub in the cup at home to QOS the week before.
Gave a massive roar to the Cowshed after doing a tackle right in front of the shed.
And that was the extent of his Morton career.
Some roar BTW.
Now I remember him. He was utterly appalling.

Henk van Schaik (remember him?) had joined Swedish third tier side IF Karlstad after leaving Germans Eintracht Trier at the end of last season.
Have absolutely no recollection of him.

You could maybe make that argument if our opposition had similar amounts of substitutes however if the team we are playing has more flexibility from the bench in terms of numbers and quality then that gives them a distinct advantage over us in a league where most of the teams are separated by fine margins.
I'm not disagreeing that 7 subs gives more options.I'd be interested to know what size of squad teams had when subs were first introduced - with only a single sub available at that time, the sub had to be versatile as they could end up in almost any position depending on how the team was reconfigured. 4 subs gives you a reasonable chance of covering most positions with someone who has some idea what is required. If we're happy not to have a sub keeper, it's hard to argue that you absolutely must have 6 outfield players on the bench.
BTW is a sub keeper allowed to come on to replace an outfield player or are they only allowed to replace the original keeper?
-
Regarding the “not able to fill the bench” thing, the number of substitutes allowed has increased over the years from zero to whatever it is now, 7 in our league, but do we really need that many? Seems to me that having a smaller number is fine in practice. A keeper and 3 other subs should cover most eventualities. Having more subs maybe gives a bit more flexibility to tailor the tactics and if you have more players available and being paid anyway it probably doesn’t affect costs, but I doubt it really handicaps the team.

Regarding budget, if it’s not being increased to allow for inflation currently in excess of 10%, it’s effectively a significant reduction.

It happens regularly. Off the top of my head, Aberdeen visited Celtic Park three times last season and only hosted Celtic once.
I'll need to think this one through logically. If you start with 12 teams and set up a full 44 game season (4 games against the other 11 teams), then eliminate the fixtures in the 4th quarter that don't happen because of the split (i.e. any fixture in the final part of a "full" season that would be between a top 6 and bottom 6 club) you should be left with a logical post-split fixture list where everyone plays fixtures that mean they end up having played 2 home games and 2 away games against the other teams in their half of the table. Obviously there's an asymmetry about the first 33 games, but it should resolve itself once the final 5 fixtures have been fulfilled, and no team should be playing 3 away league fixtures over the course of the season - obviously the fixtures that are not eliminated post-split will even up the home/away balance for the teams in both upper and lower groups as they are predetermined. Any other arrangement is a fiddle and should be called out. I had never realised that they were doing anything other than following logic.

That chant thing is horrendous. Maybe get the George Oakley "doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy dum" one properly choreographed first...

Imrie in the tele today saying that Doyle is just training and keeping himself fit and we aren't looking to offer him a deal. Also says he likes Deane and we are exploring possibility of a deal but his only concern about him is his height so we will see what happens.
Doubt he'll grow much before the season starts. Always irks me when I hear people criticising a player for not being tall enough. Two words: Leo Messi. Also Bobby Collins.

It’s not “the luck of the draw” though.
The fixture list is manipulated every single season in order that it falls the way the SPFL want it.
Is it any coincidence that the Old Firm game is always rotated with Rangers at home first one season and Celtic at home first the following season? And after the split it’s designed at all costs to give the team who played at home once the fourth derby when other fixtures don’t get the same treatment?
Is it any coincidence that Queen’s Park have only one home game before 12th September- against Arbroath, who are likely to bring less than anyone else in the league with the possible exception of Inverness?
I don’t believe we’ve been deliberately done over by the SPFL here, that would be absurd. But they’ve at best been extremely careless in how they’ve handled our fixtures, and we’re not getting anywhere near an equal spread of fixtures at vital times across multiple seasons now.
I suspect vikingTON’s motivation is that Inverness away on a Friday night at the end of the season is a tremendous day/night out, which I don’t dispute, but it shouldn’t be the main consideration when fans are forced into taking annual leave, or worse, not allowed to by their employers, and the team continually have to travel to the back of beyond for what is potentially the pivotal match of their season, year after year.
I don't really pay much attention to the top division and the fixtures after the split, but I had always assumed that at the split, each team has played every other team three times (either 2 home/1 away or 2 away/1 home), and the remaining fixtures would be based on the teams in each half of the table playing fixtures that meant that they all finished the season having played two home games and two away games against all the sides that finished in the same half of the table as them. I think that is correct because when the post split bit begins, there won't be any pair of teams that have played the same number of home & away games against each other, so the logic of who plays where in the final 5 fixtures is predetermined. Has there ever been a season when any team has played 3 home games and 1 away game against an opponent? Or has that been happening for decades and I've just never noticed?

It’s the luck of the draw. At least it’s not Ross County away every season like we had in cup draws a few years ago.

No, Newton is still alive, or was a few weeks ago.
Mortonjag is Ernie Newall IIRC. No idea if he’s still around. He was a doctor I think, hence the name.

No, far from it. During the 63-64 season Iain & I used to kick a tennis ball around in the grounds of the original Greenock Academy after school most days. usually ending in us being chased out the premises by Gus Bell, the jannie. Iain was a goalie, and had hair the colour of Irn Bru, so that might explain a lot - imagine the effect of many years of the Australian sun on a ginger. He emigrated to Oz some time in the mid 60s, and since then I've only ever seen him once, about 17 years ago, but I get the odd email very occasionally. I think his persona on here was probably a wind up. Probably egged on by Ernie Newall who was a regular irritant in the early days of this forum. But Iain was actually an OK guy.

I got one of the blue polo shirts recently. Normally get large but even the medium is verging on too big. I wouldn’t buy anything without trying it on for size first.

That shade of blue looks much better.

I’ll settle for a much-weakened team struggling at the bottom of the division before joining Falkirk in league 1 for a season or three. Although on the other hand, Firhill followed by a curry is a good day out and easy to get to, so don’t really want us in a league packed with distant teams like Ross County, Inverness, or any of the teams north of Dundee.

It’s not just the manner of the defenestration of Partick’s promotion hopes that lifts the spirits - the injury time goal to level the tie - but also the tears & snotters emanating from Maryhill. How many fingers are you sticking up now, Brian? Must be a bit like getting elbowed in the face, eh? Something at which you do excel.

The blue is too light - looks the same colour as the strip we had for the season just finished. I thought that was a particularly horrendous strip as from the back it looked like a Rangers top - their strip is usually described as light blue. We should have a royal blue. I agree about the break in the hoops. is that possibly to allow the manufacture of different sizes? Or different fatnesses at least.

Well, that worked fine though couldn't find anything on the actual fanbase app to get to the ticket purchase. Did it on my PC and it was a skoosh, and the ticket is now appearing on my phone. Just need to make sure the scanners are working properly as they have been the main problem area for those with a season card over the last couple of seasons.

When I saw the photo of it, my first thought was that it didn't look the same tartan as my original top which I still have. more a tribute act than a proper replica.
