  1. Good luck to the big guy, never a superstar but always gave his all.

Agree 100%. Nice guy, genuinely cared about the club and his place in it. I hope the club sends him a little message to thank him for his service.

I have no time for a lot of the players from that era but The Greash is an exception.

  2. Certainly hope not. He was never the player some on this forum thought he was.

He was a commanding midfielder who got forward and scored goals. Assuming he's not lost his fitness he'd tear up League One.

Still, I think it's pretty unlikely.

  3. Keenan was an impact player.

The first impact he had as a sub v qots in 2002.....straight red.

The impact he had v stirling at forthbank in 2007. On then subbed off after a truly calamitous contribution.

Hopeless player demonstrating all that was wrong with the dressing room culture under mcinally.

I remember that Forthbank game. When he got subbed off he threw a water bottle at McInally. Scenes.

  4. As far as Milne is concerned I was of the same opinion, however I met a former player of that era on holiday a couple of years back and we were talking about the club in that period. He told me that When things were going tits up and players not being paid etc. Milne would make sure that those players who were paying mortgages and bringing up young families got their wages before he took his.

To be fair he was also eligible for a state pension at the time.

(Nah for real though, that's actually good of him. Fair play.)

  5. This season's been fucking dire, no question, one of the worst in the club's history, but I read stuff like that and remember it could be worse, we could have Dean Keenan and Kieran McAnespie gurning around the place.

The current squad is rancid and nondescript but has there ever been a less likeable figure at Cappielow than Dean Keenan? Maybe Andy Millen or Hugh Scott at a push.

  6. He didn't use it as an excuse, did he? He said we should have won from that position and didn't do enough. In any case, even if it isn't an excuse, it's a reason why we found it difficult. 11 v 9 is difficult to break down. We should have done better, and Shiels says as much in his interview, but we are far from the first and best team who have struggled to do that - for precisely the reasons that Shiels put in his interview.

As much as I'm pissed off with the result, I agree with this. I think he acknowledged that it's difficult, which is fair. What I object to is this idea that it's somehow harder, and I don't think that's what Shiels is saying.

Of course breaking down any team is difficult when you can't create chances.

  7. Probably harder, seeing as how they released him.

I agree with this. The one thing you could never accuse McGowan of doing is holding back.

Of course as he plays for St. Mirren I want him to lose every game but as a professional I am a fan of his. I'd take him back at Cappielow in a heartbeat but sadly his level is SPL.

  8. I'm not rubbishing the juniors. I'm rubbishing your conception of the juniors' being anywhere near SFL2 standard. The junior game is fine for what it is - it's just irritating that junior fans always surface every time they see a player not tripping over the ball to say "oh, he could do a job in the SFL", or because they can manage crowds in the mid-three figures (at £5 a go with a carry-out allowed in half the grounds) they're "on a par with the Second Division."

As I said - junior football is fine for what it is, but with SFL regulations, SFL policing, SFL structures, SFL seasons and so on, not a single junior side in the country would be doing anything but scrambling around at the bottom of division 3. Which is why they remain junior - their setup works for them.

  9. Can't believe this.....I read this thread and clicked the link about 6 last night........went to the Lighthouse about 9 pm and not later than half nine in walks Chris Millar with...................... Mell Bottiglieri, and his wife............photos to follow.

Best part of the night was when Mel and his Mrs got up to sing, as they finished, the boys gave a chorus of ......

"Posh Spice is a Slapper, She's always on the Telly, and when she's shagging Beckham, she thinks of Bottiglieri"

    That is superb :D

  10. It's true, until this season I was getting more entertainment and value for money at Talbot matches than at Morton matches.

Which means nothing about the quality of the league.

The likes of Gavin Collins could easily do a job in the 2nd division, there are a lot of right haddies there though that will readily respond to taunts from the crowd, great fun.

I'm sure there are some players talented enough in the juniors to go senior. In a very few cases they're better off staying part time in the junior setup. But in the vast, vast majority of cases, the players either 1) aren't good enough or 2) don't have the mentality to succeed in the SFL.

I have nothing against the juniors whatsoever but there is a real gulf in quality between the middle of Division 2 and the very top of the Superleague.
