Look Ernie - there is no one more disappointed in me that Mr Donald chose not to invest in the club. The club needs a large dose of inward investment to let us make the leap from Div 1 mediocrity to our rightful place in SPL mediocrity.

But the harsh facts are that Mr Donald didn't chose to invest, he didn't bring a whole pile of business smarts to the table, he didn't pay for the St Mirren stand, and the only LEGAL and tangible thing we have to rely on is that he owed money as per the accounts which are a matter of public record.

He has been cited as the white knight on the steed at Rangers (twice now), Clyde and Morton - with the same results.

He was quoted as being worth £70M in 2004/2005. If you dig a wee bit deeper into that then you may conclude that based on the investments he was involved in - that his £70M is nowhere near that mark right now - and while his wealth would still be substantial for the likes of me and you - it is not at the level where he can throw even a million of it at a first division football club that runs at a loss of somewhere between 250k-500k a season -and thats assuming he could free up a million of liquid cash right now - if he has invested as most people of his ilk have, then that is not an option right now.

Please note that all of the above is my opinion based on the research I have done - and is not a criticism or a statement of fact - for the benefit of the "friend" who reads the board.

Irons kept us up last season with 48 points and a poorer squad - wake up people.
Grady's too naive to start off at this level, 12 points from 12 games is true relegation form, 2 clean sheets in 12 is damning for a caretaker, it's time we got someone experienced in to get us the points we need.

If things don't change drastically over the next 3 or 4 games (not including the Celtic game) then I fully expect Morton to be playing in division two next season. Unfortunately my gut feeling is that whether it's Grady, the players or the tooth fairy that's at fault, it's pretty much irrelevant as I don't imagine anything will be changing anytime soon.

I dont really want to have a pop at Grady although I am somewhat mystified when people continually state that we are now playing amuch better football....our obvious problem is the failure to create chances or have anyone to stick the ball in the net. the back 4 and goalie were fine last night with Shimmin an obvious class act....after that there is very little. The two in the middle of the park are planks of woosd who are clearly unable to make a forward telling pass. Finlayson is a trier with little ability and who knows what has happened to McAllister? As for Wake, again a div 2 or 3 player at best and Weatherson, who we all know has ability, has little or no support ando lacks a bit of fitness. After we lost the goal the heads went down and we probably had our worst spell of the game.
Grady is inexperienced, clearly, but I doubt he could do much more with that group of players. However relegation is now a very real possibility especially with Ayr and Airdrie improving so Dougie had better sign a couple of forwards this month or it could be a unmitigated disaster.

I have other priorities, i can take a few days to reply....

If your looking for a cheap electric guitar yamaha pacifica's quite good but fender squire guitars come highly recommended. When I first started learning guitar I had a squire (bass) and a mate with a squire strat. Both guitars were absolute crackers for the money we paid for them.

Everones said it before but practising by yourself is the best way to get good on any instrument. Having your guitar in easy reach of your couch is always handy so u can pick it up and strum away if something s*** comes on the telly!

FFS, how stupid are some of you? Peter is a very talented player toiling in a fairly poor team. Give him decent service, preferably on the ground, and he'll score loads of goals. The problem is that all we do is hoof the ball up the park and he is left to try to win headers or make what he can of scraps. If you think we can afford to lose our best player you are seriously naive. Who will we replace him with? Some 35 year old has been? Decent strikers are not easy to find and we have one so why not try to keep him and then beef up the rest of the team where there ARE players who are not up to scratch. We should be improving the team, not weakening it. if Peter had had a decent strike partner instead of the utterly mediocre (with occasional flashes of brilliance or luck) Wake, then we would have won last night.

am i the only one whom seems to lay the blame on Dougie R's doorstep. Once again we sack a manager half way through a season leaving the team and fans in limbo as per usual. I personaly think we will go down this season,as the managment at present have done little to convince me that they will still be in charge next season.I for one think that had Dougie stuck with the last lot we would have had more points on the board today.

As for Jim McAlister I think he should be dropped as he is not the player we all make out he is,champions league material hes having a laugh.

Lets put it this way if the current managment keep us up by a single piont or goal,will they merrit a bite at the cherry next season (as the last managment team done)I dont think so, that is my reason for leaving the last team in place because they wouldn'n have done much better but I believe we would have had more points today,even so they should have been bagged then NOT mid way through a season.

As for players not fit enough, fast enough, surely THIS IS the managers job.
At the end of the day the guy is young inexperienced and needs to learn his trade, but I don't think Morton is the place for him to do that, he is not strong enough to challenge Rae constructively and gain anything from it. He also cannot identify when his team need leadership and support, therefore he would be best suited to being somebody's assistant at a fresh club where he has no history. Good Luck.

Peter has delivered a pretty good return over his time at the club but let's not pretend he's some sort of world beater. He hasn't been particularly well supported for the past few years but his lack of pace (and interest at times) has also limited his effectiveness. I think McCall is right that too many players have been rewarded with long contracts for no good reason and that has introduced a complacency culture to the team. Peter has probably been affected by that as much as any.

The one thing we would miss is his abilty to finish as we haven't had another striker with a genuine eye for goal for years.

I have to say, for what would have otherwise been one of NewTon's all too regular threads about something inane that none of us give a toss about, the use of a controversial word served its purpose in igniting the debate that he so craved.

For what its worth, I dont think NewTon is a racist, and even if he were I dont think that would necessarily make him a bad person. Everyone has a prejudice and the ability to discriminate, even those who are quick to point fingers as to assume some kind of moral highground over them. I use a Squier Tele as my second guitar. I got it band new for a price I'd have been an idiot not to go for. Again, it's all in the set-up, a guy I know did it and it plays as good as any US Fender I've played. That said, if I came into some cash I'd buy a US Tele.

If you had been around these boards as long as I have you wouldn't have needed to ask that question.

I completely and totally disagree with that. Of all the lower league teams beating big teams... have you ever seen a wee team playing with gay abandon to upset a big team?

If we want to win our best chance is to keep it tight, frustrate them and perhaps pick up a breakaway or a set piece. At the very least, we could get a draw this way, but cavaliering forward will play right into Celtic's hands.

Obviously however we play, we are reliant on a poor Celtic performance to get a result, but frustrating them is the best way to cause problems.

I don't have any real info on which to base a view either way about Rae. However, with regard to this thread and the one about Grady's performance, I think we need to understand that running the club is essentially a business - any chairman should be judged over a long time period (say five to ten years) and the manager over at least a full season (probably more). All this calling for them to go every five minutes is pretty unrealistic. All I would say is that most modern businesses don't have their chairmen involved in their day to day running - their role is to stand back, take a long term view and challenge the managers about their decisions. Football clubs don't seem to have caught up with modern business practice - most chairmen behave much more like a chief executive, which dilutes the long term strategic vision of the business.

Hope the guy gets some sort of fine, that is a terrible waste of good resources!

Now does that not appear that the interviewer has asked a question relating to Grady's team of choice?

If you read the article then you'll find that only 194 of the articles 926 words are exclusively about Grady being a Celtic fan. 336 are spent on discussions regarding a previous incident in a Scottish cup game, where as 441 are spent discussing being the manager or Morton, where he wants the club to go and his views (from the position of manager) regarding the game against Celtic.

This has really annoyed me, because he's hardly came out and said anything about being a Celtic supporter. He's been interviewed about the game by a journalist who thinks that it is a matter of interest what happened years ago. The topic of discussion is mostly centered on Morton, being the manager and our game against Celtic.

Hate agreeing with OF fans, but when you see nonsense like this you understant why they think us wee teams have a chip on our shoulder.

You may well be right, but I thought that the bench was very poor in terms of quality and providing a different option - there wasn't much to be done with it other than make a straight switch.

McGuffie, for example, could have came in place of Finlayson who had his poorest game for a while and provided an extra goal threat with his ability to make a late run into the box as he has done on a fair few occasions. Possibly, he could have even played in a more advanced central role behind the strikers to try and provide some kind of link-up.

Masterton, too, could have helped provide some kind of bridge between the two, as well as be able to try and keep the ball and provide a goal threat from his shooting and set-pieces.

As for Russell, then he would at least have freshened up a rather predictable and ineffective front line, giving us a different approach. Alternatively, he could have played in a wider role and tried to get into positions to provide the crosses for Wake and Weatherson, something both Finlayson and particularly McAlister failed to do throughout.

Now, I have my own opinions on the merits of those players, but they would have given us something different against Thistle. Wake did have a poor game, as he is prone to do now and again, but at the same time whenever he was getting the ball he was forced to look for a pass back the way, often to a defender, because his strike partner showed no interest at all in coming looking for the ball or trying to draw defenders to make space for a midfield run. No doubts that he didn't play well, but I'd rather have that kind of bad performance that at least makes defenders run a wee bit than some guy just standing there hoping the ball will drop square at his feet. I have had the good fortune to realise my childhood ambitions through my career path, i used to watch the large cranes at the shipyards in awe and set out my career path to that end. I had the added bonus of doing and seeing a lot of exciting stuff in the army i.e. working with bomb disposal in N.I. for 3 years After my time in the army i got my crane career up and running and soon worked my way up to operating the largest mobile crane in the UK, since then got myself experienced on other types of crane i.e. dockside container cranes. I became the youngest certified supervisor in Scotland a few years ago, i have now went back to operating again and its good to get up in the morning knowing your going to get to play with a big boys toy all day. Work to me is something that you need to enjoy and have a good interest in to get the best out of it.

What is clear, however, is that within certain groups of young people there is a slight, but noted, decrease in drinking regularity and consumption. Education is working, the effects are gradual.
The increasing problem groups are young women and the middle aged, the bottle of wine with their evening meal class. There's no indication that these people are using the sort of high-alcohol low price products that would be most affected.

Average alcohol consumption in France for example is probably as high as the UK, but they tend to drink moderately every day - almost all French has a glass or two of wine with every meal - whereas we tend to abstain during the week and binge at the weekends.

I actually bought an entire bathroom on the 2nd of Jan (complete suite, heated tower rail, shower, tiles, lights etc.) and got most of it it in the B&Q half price sale (which i think ended on the 4th) & the rest in the various bathrooms places in Hillington. Came to about £1k and that was including absolutely everything. Mate is going to fit it for a couple of hundred as well, so about 1.2k in total (although there is plenty of options above and below that price) I think Homebase still has a big sale on, maybe worth a look.

If you look at the figures, there is no evidence to suggest underage drinking is on the increase, and drinking among 18-24 year olds as a whole is slightly decreasing. Unless the winos are having a rammy over the dessert course I don't see how the problem is any worse for the authorities than ten years ago.

It's again worth pointing out that middle class evening drinkers would be completely unaffected by a 40p per unit minimum price.

It is a good point Shirley that the common misconception is that it is the neds that are the worst offenders and focus solely on them. As you quite rightly point out MJ alcoholism is not a class condition however poverty amd lack of education can help in the battle against our drink problem and as I have said it perhaps stops other classes in society getting help because of the stigma and shame. That is why I am not sure if price increases would necessarily ease the problem significantly but curtailing and controlling the amount you can drink in a session should be looked at.

Yep, I agree with this. That's the reason I've been quick to defend him of late. Even though I don't think he can play in the Championship, he absolutely has the ability to play in this league. If we have a clear out, he's one of the players I think could prosper with better players around him. Jenkins too, and probably Weatherson. This club has been poisonous for players, look at Millar and Gardyne after they left, or Jenkins and McGuffie before they arrived.

It depends what you're looking for. You can get a full suite for about the £300 mark, but remember you get what you pay for.

It's best to shop around and you will get a discount at a plumbers merchant if you open up an account.

Plus, take everything into account, not just the suite, i.e tiles and tiling, acccessories, electrical work, joinerywork if required, plastering, decorating. It all adds up.

The way money has been slung about with seemingly gay abandon down Cappielow way is quite astonishing though, especially when the chairman is constantly demanding that we "bring a friend" because we need 4,000 to break-even. Maybe one day common sense will prevail.

Surely there must be a social aspect to that as well. I guess it is the old chicken or the egg question? The problems in their life caused them to drink e.g. messy divorce or were they predestined to drink and only drink? or are there some activities and physical products which can have the same effect. Eating a cake or sweetie in large proportions produces a chemical feeling from the cake in food addicts? but is that the same as a gambler gets if his horse wins?

I don't see how anyone can accuse Paartalu of being lazy. As I see it, he's an honest big guy who has the ability to become a very accomplished defensive midfielder at this level, but he does seem quite immature as a player at times. Hopefully playing alongside McFarlane will help him to that end, and that people are willing to have a bit of patience with him.

As for Masterton, he's played well when we've played a system and style that suits him, but disappared at other times. I don't think he's lazy as such, but he is at times too laid-back for his own good. He definitely possesses a great deal of technical ability, and if we were to play something like a 4-3-3, I think he would excel alongside McFarlane/Paartalu and Jenkins. Again, probably the type of player who would fare much better if he wasn't getting hassle from a couple of thousand people every time he touched the ball, but there you go.
Both of them are still young guys learning the game, playing in roles which many players don't really fully develop in until a later age - see Barry Robson and Paul Hartley to name two. Not that either have been outstanding performers every time they've played, but they do have talent and sometimes you need to have a wee bit of patience. Maybe they would be more tolerated if they just lunged into all manner of ridiculous tackles to show their "passions".

The hard fact most people don't grasp is that for the last 22 or so years we have been out of the top flight of Scottish football. That is nearly a quarter of a century. Alcoholics are differenf from normal drinkers, our bodies do not process the alcohol the same as "normal drinkers" and this leaves us craving for more of what caused the craving, the more we drink, the worse the craving becomes. Normal drinkers never experience this craving because their bodies break the alcohol down correctly. Morton jag is correct in, what he says, anyone who becomes alcoholic will admit that his drinking was always "different" from his mates. In the early days we can controll it but as we drink more our bodies become less and less able to break the drink down and we become powerless over it, thus it is a progressive illness, never getting better, only worse. The only answer is total abstention because if we introduce alcohol to our system the whole process starts again. I speak from experience, I have never lost a job, been done for DD or anything one would associate with an "alky" but believe me, its no fun when you cant function without this stuff in your system. When I see young people who have the potential to be affected by this illness it saddens me as I know the misery that is waiting down the line for them.

I used to have huge alcohol and drug addiction problems (for MANY years) but addressed them 8 years ago.
I now work with people with addictions and have witnessed that total abstinence is not necessary for some.
I can go for a few pints occasionally without it releasing my demons.There may be a genetic element to addiction but in the main I believe addiction to be a behavioural problem and therefor changing your thinking and behaviour is the key to successful recovery without the need for God's or higher powers.
Once again, mentalton, don't take this as a dig, it's just an opinion. Right at the start AA were a help to me,not the big book or the 12 steps (apart from step1 which is crucial to realise)but from the amazing people I met there.

That is not the most pressing part in my opinion. The manager and the first team are the most pressing part and the youth set up should have been tackled six years ago at least . The youth team set up smacks to me of people who fancy being the saviour of the club but the one major flaw I see is why are we the punters investing in youth and handing them over free gratis to Dougie with no return. Why is he not splashing the cash on the youth set up. Seems something not quite right that a "charity" produces players for a "business" and the guy who runs it gets "products" for nothing and the fans see nothing in return financially. I tried to highlight some of the poor record of the youth set up despite the area having a few promising players.

I even asked DDFR and although he pointed out such things take time without any guarentee of success and I pointed out that Craig Black, Alan Gilbrides age group won the under17's league, that was a success that should have been built on. We didn't , an under19's team should have been initiated at that time.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and comments on the issue. It is a serious consideration for all parents with small children and I guess it is a decision that can not be made without due care and consideration.

One point that has stuck out here is that a medical professional has refused the vaccine on the grounds that we clearly do not know enough about it as it was prepared in a "rush".

However, when are we likley to know enough about it? Will we ever know enough about it in order to make a more informed decision? Will a newer more resultant (if that's the right term) vaccine be produced in 6/12/18 months time and if so will we be made aware of this and then "re-offered" this newer vaccine because we chose not to have this first, rushed one????

It is certainly a puzzler and I for one never thought I would be "pondering" over whether or not to have my Daughter vaccinated against a virus. She has already had the MMR and other jags to date and we never even stopped to give any of that a single thought so why has this made us stop in our tracks and pause for thought????

Greenock Morton FC - Inverclyde Football Academy. (GMIFA) is the name of the organisation setting up the Academy and has no formal ties with he Greenock Morton Supporters' Society or the trust as it commonly known.

I believe it will be self funding and reliant on grants and I believe Stuart Duncan has been instrumental in getting things off the ground, the rest I would be speculating on as I genuinely don't know.

One of the most pleasant aspects of living in mainland Europe is that you can go into just about any city centre of an evening and not see hoards of violent drunken neds roaming about. No, he's saying that consumption of alcohol will increase up to a point where the general population can't drink anymore regularly and still live a normal life. You say the levels of consumption hasn't been changed since 1998, who's to say the level of consumption in 1998 was at a safe level? And if they haven't changed, and people were drinking the same then as they do now: are we're maxed out already?

The propose plan is aimed at reducing alcohol problems across the board, from the alcoholic who dies from liver disease to the student who gets legless at the weekend and pisses on the war memorial - drink less and we'll have less health / social problems. I gather from your posts, the point you make is that it won't help everyone. How then do you tackle the problem with alcohol amongst those predisposed to it genetically? And as has already been stated, it might go a long way to prevent folk going down that road in the first place...

Based on what Cawton taking a hissy fit. There is no proper channels for something that doesn't exist yet and is typical of silly wee boys with over inflated ego. Jonaton said at the agm this was queeried and the answer was yes the potential players go over to Cappielow for free. So the project is not funded by the Board but they get all the profits and benefits after not investing substanially over the years and shirley the clubs shares would increase if this was to happen. The shares that the Trusssst has invested in and obviously Mr Rae has invested in also. I see only a win win for a guy who has done very little to invest in the youth system.

Doc I view this more as an opportunity to try and steer future generations away from becoming problem drinkers, although I will admit that our history of heavy drinking does not help, but do we do nothing at all?
Teenagers are not so much problem drinkers but rather have a problem with drink and as a society we can change the approach that youth have to drink but much of that would depend on peers approach to educating youngsters.

I would much further than what is on the cards, I would do away completely with shops (especially in schemes) being allowed to sell alcohol (these are usually the main culprits for kids getting drink).

But even us adults no the risk but still carry on with the abuse of alcohol. We choose to drink excessively and its not just alcohol. A vast majority of well educated people choose to eat high fat, high sugar diets and take no exercise. We know what to do but don't do it.
Smoking in pubs was seen as totally "normal" and even after campaigns to "educate" people their choice was still to smoke. Baning it in pubs has been a success in my opinion and I can not imagine it going back to the old ways. Has this decreased smoking related deaths?

Hes our Chairman, who is investing and trying to do something with the place. Granted some things work, other dont, but it is his money getting used. We can all sit back and build a fantasy SPL outfit on here, but in reality we are all witnessing (in real life) that, not all seeds grow into beanstalks. People are quick to forget the state of the place when a last minute bid saved our wrecked club, Sky high debts and only a few football tops n' balls around the place. An entire youth set may be on the cards once other thing have been obtained, who knows?? But if the trust are trying to get something sorted sooner then thats great as is anything which expands this club.

I was reading that instead of getting paid to treat illnesses that Doctors in a trial were getting paid to concentrate on keeping folk healthy and the more healthy the patient the better they were paid and this produced a significant effect on the amount of illnesses the patient came to be treated by the patient. What about that role reversal. Seems sometimes we look for the cure rather than prevention of alot of illnesses. What is your view on that Doc?

I think Douglas's original post was a good one (I'm presuming he has the permission of 'Babs' to post this). The problem is getting people to open up about mental health issues. I am always prepared to speak on a one to one basis with people but certainly would not be prepared to post anything on here so the problem remains hidden to a huge extent.
The governments backing of the pharmaceutical industry regarding mental health sickens me. The umbrella term 'depression' is also not helpful as most of what is classed as such isn't. Anti-depressants should not the first course of action in my opinion although Douglas may disagree and obviously he has the bragging rights on experience.

I think it is pretty good. It has as Mj said open up people talking about mental health isuues and makes it less of the taboo it was only 30 years ago. Guys like Neil Lennon just could not have talked about having depression in the 60s their career would have been effectively over. Loads of people are in denial about having the symptoms and hide it with alcohol,drugs etc

As for your views on the umberella term "Depression" who cares what the medical terminology is called. If the person wants to call it Depression or "The Fear" or whatever and it helps them cope or open up about mental health then so what? The label doesn't mean anything.
Wrongly terming it something which they feel (the patient) comfortable with is ok by me.
Calling it "depression" can be self protecting to bullying and being stigmatised and even helps the patient cope. It still happens today unfortunately that people with depresion and other mental health problems are labelled, stereotyped and bullied because of an illness they have.

With more than 10 billion neurons in the brain there are always possibilities of developing "hard-wiring" issues. The central nervous system is perhaps the most complex area and yet people can be quite dismissive of mentalists .

I know Doc. On the subject of "what school did you attend" amazingly there was a famous social study that concluded that Protestants are more likely to commit suicide than Catholics apparently because Caholics were more likely to feel more unified with their fellow church goer when participating in unified prayers etc than a protestant in the study who were more likely to feel isolated and prayed on their own more often. Strange but true.

Good post. My loathing of the term 'depression' ismy own. A better term would be 'a depression'. This is not semantics on my part but I genuinely believe that. Guys like Lennon can help a lot and Marcus Trescothick has been very vocal in campaigns on mental health.
I dislike psychiatry. Drug peddlers in my book who view the human condition in a very black and white way. As a nation we should be training therapists rather than psychiatrists.

There is no Youth Academy or will be in the near future. All good intentions e.g. Malky Thomson set up to lead it ( as per the Greenock Telegraph ) but all has gone quiet since then. Looks to me like it has died and no one who knows anything about it wants to talk. So where does all the " fans money go now ?

I dont think there will be many teams willing to pay millions for a guy they have only seen training with an academy. What you seem to be suggesting sound more like a glorified youth team.

Every player from pub league to proffesional has to be registered with a team or someone else can just sign them anyway. If ran as an independant academy what league would this team play in order to be able to register players? The local Sunday league? For a player to have any value they must also have a contract as this is what is bought out so it makes sense for the registration to be held by a proffesional club as both the contract and registration have to be held by the same party. The teams are also then able to play in the SFL/ SPL youth leagues.

I seriously doubt an independant academy would work anyway otherwise there would already be loads already set up across the world. The one below is one of the only examples I can find and its not exactly had million pound bids being made for its players (albiet the academy having slightly different aims).

Morton should be making donations to the set up proposed but I'd imagine this cant be an official percentage of transfer fees or anything like that as it may affect the charity status of the youth academy and therefore any grants, etc that may be given otherwise.

Ok Rae should be investing, no one is disputing that, but he isn't. Your coming across like a spoilt wee boy who cant see the greater good for us as a club. Dougie ain't going to be around for ever but this set up would and would also support the club as well without being a drain on resources. Make no mistake if Dougie were to set this up and pay for it and someone else came along later and had to cut costs for whatever reason the youth set up would be first to go. I agree that with say mild depression or anxiety that tablets are not the only answer. Mental health conditions should be treated just like heart conditions. Do people react differently to one heart condition in a person to another more serious one in another patient. Its the stigma attached and the bullying etc that ALL mental health unfortunately conditions can attract and no matter whether we give them different names I feel some serious ones should be still seen as an illness and treated with the same respect as your less serious and far more common every day mental health illnesses.

Ok a few comments...

We do have the potential to have a wee jaunt in the SPL. Clubs like St Johnstone, Hamilton, Thistle, St Mirren, ICT etc etc have all had a few seasons up there or become established in the last few years. Probably we would have our day in the sun at some point.

However... I think we will struggle with this under the leadership of Rae. Yes, Rae puts in cash but does he get good value for it? Not at all.

Could a better run Morton still maintain a division 1 place when having to break even... probably in the short term this would be possible.

Can Rae attract players to the club without paying over the odds for them? No, and I think this is probably his main failing.

Is the Trust the answer... sadly membership of the trust is nowhere near the level to make this a realistic goal. Obviously if the club was up for sale, interest may increase to a better level but currently I think the supporters trust currently has potential only to be a fringe group.

Does Rae have an exit strategy? Dunno, assume Crawford Rae would take over when Dougie retired.

Would Crawford Rae be any better? Probably, don't know how much though.

If the trust could get 2000 members would they be able to take over and run the club? Probably, but I think without 1 person in charge the club would end up poorly run. You can't run it like a bowling club with a monthly committee meeting and show of hands to make decisions etc. Someone would need to be a full time chairman elected by members to make the day to day decisions.

Could we afford a better Youth Set up with the trust in charge? Dunno, certainly the trust seem committed to a youth set up but really we are starting from zero and probably hundreds of thousands of pounds would need to be thrown at this.

Is there anyone else who could bankroll us and perhaps be more successful than Rae? Dunno. Probably this is what we would need post Rae to make another step to where we could challenge at the top of division 1.

Are we that far away? I don't think we are miles away, and probably our squad size is going to hold us back once we can sort out some problem positions. Certainly seasons like this where someone like Dundee spend a lot of cash and look comfortably ahead of everyone else are going to be less and less common, and looking at next season the league will probably be even tighter.

I don't see us becoming an established SPL club, but once we get the ground sorted it is possible that players will be easier to attract as 'SPL ambition' will no longer just be a phrase banded about. We could certainly emerge from the pack in the few seasons and pinch the league during a tight season to at least have a look at the SPL.

Is the SPL the be all and end all... no, it would be nice to have a go at it, but it would get a bit boring after a while being a smaller fish etc.

If Erik's passing wasn't diabolical at times and he even had a bit of composure on the ball then he'd be a very decent option to have, but really we've only seen a modest improvement from him despite a lot of games over the past two seasons.

I don't think he's a lost cause, but McFarlane looked decent against Thistle and reckon Jenks really must start if fit. However I guess Erik is the player who has stayed fit over the past few seasons when Masterton, Jenks and McGuffie have all had quite a few games off.

Erik has had some good games for us, but I think overall he is a back-up player.

As for Walker, he's missed quite a bit of football, obviously with DVZ away he'd probably be in the team if fit, but he's not fully fit so why have him struggle in what Grady see's as a key position?

No, he should have sacked him in March 2004, and there's a chance we would have gone up.

We've never been as big as the likes of Aberdeen and we never will be. The likes of Hamilton however, well if Rae had showed the slightest bit of interest in a youth system and put plans in place for it when he took over, we could be at the level they're at just now. That's the only way forward, invest in a youth system and wait for the rewards to come. In the not too distant past we produced two Scotland internationals in Hopkin and McInnes, plus the likes of Lilley, Collins and Mahood. We get back to producing players like that, we won't be spunking absurd transfer fees on Second Division players, we'll have a good team and we'll able to live within our means through selling players on. It'll take patience and we'll just have to hope we can survive in the First Division in the meantime, but it's the only way for Morton to progress IMO.

Rangers are MY team not Bawheids, but he attends the home games with me becuase he WOULDN'T put that burden of care and reponsibility on our daughters, or any other family member - NOT because he supports Rangers.
He doesn't get to watch Morton very often because of my health, but attends games when he can.

On the whole question of the leadership of the club, I accept the premise that in many respects it could (and should?) be better run. What I cannot get my head around re the DDFR must go brigade is

1) If he is not around how will we fund our annual losses of the order of £3-400,000?
2) Is there a friendly multi millionaire waiting on the wings to swoop in and invest?

I accept many of the arguments for change. I just do not obviously see how it can be made to happen, even if DDFR was willing to sell.

On the topic of youth development, we should have spent on this years ago and we have plenty of lessons from history of our own club, never mind others to show how profitable it can be both in terms of the team and the club's finances. Unfortunately, it is also an expensive business. Hamilton reputedly spend £250k+ per annum on their setup and whilst they have recouped that from McCarthy and might get more for MacArthur, its not yet obvious in their first team that there is a conveyor belt of similar players coming through.

For me, Hibs and Aberdeen are the clubs to look at as role models. Hibs in particular have had a huge number of good players come through, many of whom have produced big money transfers for the club. Aberdeen regular have teenagers playing first team football and have a scouting system that scours Scotland for players - look at the number of Greenock boys who end up there.

If DDFR wants to leave the club a legacy, a vibrant and active youth setup would be the best he could do.

I make it seven - I think you have to include both Dundee teams. There are a couple more who have been bigger than us all the time I have been supporting Morton - Kilmarnock for example - but your general premise is right.

Douglas Rae could have made a better fist of what he has invested in the club but the Morton malaise is far, far older. It really goes back to the board at the time of the Benny Rooney/Andy Ritchie era who refused to go fulltime when we clearly had the potential. We could have been a Motherwell - essentially an SPL fixture with, by this time, a fully developed Cappielow or alternative home!

We are, as they say, where we are and I still struggle to see the answer!

I sadly agree with this point. Rae has tried his hardest and I don't think anybody will deny him that point, but the time to employ a Director of Football or something of that nature has long passed and when/if he finally does it there will be a sense of 'About time' rather than 'Smart move Doogie'. But as you say, we were a Second Division team back then, Hamilton have invested very heavily in their youth system, more than we could have afforded to. We couldn't expect to invest significantly less and gain the same amount of return.

I don't think grady has failed us again. For goodness sake. I would reckon he is sending alex out on loan to gain some match fitness. He has been out for a fairly long period now. Throwing him straight back into the team i doubt would be a very good idea. Yes it is a shame that alex walker has been one of those players not utilised for his best talents but i dont think you can lay the blame on grady.

There are too many people expecting too much from grady in my opinion. Let's be honest he has inherited a team of guys that think they are better than they are. I think he has showed some promising signs as manager. I think that give them till the end of the season to see how they get on. If they save us just from relegation without showing signs of improving the team in any way then i think Rae should have a good think about it. But if they save us from relegation with signs of improvement in players or a couple of signings that are actually different and begin to make it look like their 'own' team then i think they will turn into a decent managerial duo.

We're making very steady progress. If we don't finish above 6th this ear it'll be the first time in about 8 years we haven't improved our league position from the last.

In the last decade we've seen Morton relegated to the bottom tier, nearly liquidated, very dark days.

Since then we've seen a miraculous day out the day we won the 3rd division; a few seasons of 2nd division football we can't say weren't interesting (if for different reasons each time); of course the season we promotion back to our natural level with some brilliant goals, high scoring wins and of course the famous scalp of Killie in the Scottish Cup. The away support at Motherwell thereafter still makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up.

In the last couple of seasons we've struggled to make much of an impact on the first division but had a right go for spell last year, the last day escape at Firhill and some of us were lucky enough to see another tremendous cup upset with the win over Hibs. It was one of the most exciting and dramatic games I've ever seen. This season we're looking into the abyss again but have been rewarded for our patience (ahem) with another juicy cup tie, this time against Celtic!

There are many clubs worse off than Morton, we're a right lucky bunch if you ask me. Count your blessings an'aw that.

What progress have we made off the field with Youth and commercially? Has progress been made? We went over budget by 100k is that progress? We sacked yet another manager. Grady is only contracted to end of the season and I wouldn;t bank on any stability there as Rae changes managers more than he changes his underpants!

I also liked Alex Walker playing in midfield, he had a bit of drive, passing ability and a decent shot.

However his most natural position is right back, he played there for Rangers, including one SPL game against Hibs, then played in the same position for Clyde. Whenever he's played right back for Morton he's looked at his most comfortable, especially when playing behind a decent right winger (McLaren or Miller).

I think Walker is just another in a long line of players who Morton have failed to use properly. We've treated Walker as a utility player and used him almost everywhere but his natural position, even when we kept saying we had no full backs.

I'm afraid our previous two managers have left a legacy of a highly dysfunctional and lopsided squad of players with too many one dimensional players of the same predictable type, too few in the postions required and none of the creative type.

Ideally an attacking side should have drive and creativity on both wings and through the middle to make things happen. We unbelievably have none of the three which gives us no chance of progressing, especially when we don't have a pacy striker to counteract this failing.

Any manager taking on the task of making a decent team from this squad has a massive job on his hands, and Grady has shown some signs he may be up to the challenge. IMO he needs to change half the squad before we can start to move forward.

For me this is about the nearest we could get to a genuine attacking force from the current squad. We'd have a bit of craft and creativity on both wings and through the centre to provide service to the strikers, whilst being relatively solid at the back.

I think we need to try something different from Finlayson and McAlister, who both look jaded through countless games trying without success to be proper wingers. There may be room for one of them in the team but not two without an end product. The only time I'd play both would be as wing backs in a 3-5-2.

Ideally we need a couple of pacy wingers who can cross a ball, and a driving creative midfielder. All three should also be able to chip in with a few goals per season.

Caldwell is a rich man's Harding. Likely to have a lapse in concentration before making a floaty 40 yard pass to the opposition.

We are in my opinion on a par with or should be with the likes of Falkirk , Thistle, St Johnstone,ICT and certainly in the top 14 easily and if we were to punch above our weight then up there with Motherwell, Dundee Utd or Dundee (if they were doing just ok). We are not bigger than the Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen then the two Dundee clubs(if they have success). Basically the city clubs.
After that then there are two or three clubs Motherwell,St Midden or Kilmarnock leading who could argue they have a bigger potential fanbase, have had more success and there are realistically six we should be on a par with or should beat on a a normal day and have just as many potential fans if not more,and should have a great stadium like they have and have just as much success. Thistle, Dunfermline, St Johnstone, Kilmarnock, ICT, and a rejuvinated Ayr United.

I can't believe so many of you actively want one of our best players to leave. And are Partick actually a better option for anyone? I don't think so. If he leaves I'd rather it was to a different league because I'd rather have Peter playing for us than against us.

Depressing how so many of you seem to think that mid first division obscurity is the best we can ever be expected to achieve. Well, the way some of you treat our players, you may be right because frankly they get more abuse from within our own ranks than they do from opposition supporters. Good players should be welcomed, not turned into pariahs.

I reckon Morton's catchment extends to Kilmacolm and Langbank to the East - OK maybe a few in Bishopton but for the most part further east than these two is St Mirren territory. To the South its Largs. Further down is Kilmarnock/Ayr territory.

As for Morton fans living elsewhere, thats true but it is also true for every other team.

I honestly think we need players to provide service to our current strikers rather than yet another striker trying to create his own opportunities.

When you look at the dearth of creativity in our midfield and attack I actually think the scoring ratio of our strikers is pretty impressive. Look at the free headers from crosses Liam Buchanan had against Morton and Dundee United and he put them into the keeper's hands or past the post. Weatherson gets a cross like that about once every 10 games and puts them away 9 times out of 10.

Weatherson, Wake, Graham and Russell for me is a very good squad of strikers at this level, who will get plenty of goals if the service is provided. You continually see them chasing long or high balls and trying for hopeful flick-ons rather than accurate crosses or passes. IMO we should be looking elsewhere for the reasons we don't score enough goals. As well as not providing decent service our midfielders and wingers also score a ridiculously low amount of goals themselves, one decent midfielder (E.g. Chris Millar) could score more than all of them put together.

I may be shot down for this but if I could buy one player to help solve our attacking problems it would be Paul McGowan. He would take the ball from our statue-like midfielders and drive forward to link up with our not very fast strikers. He could either be used as an attacking midfielder or deep lying forward (old fashioned inside forward).

For me McGowan was ideal for us when he helped us win promotion and would be even more so now. He seems to possess what it takes to fill the gaping hole between our static midfield and immobile attack, add his goals and it would be like getting two players for the price of one.

We have just celebrated the 30th anniversary of a Part time Morton being top of the old premier league, and now we are a full time team.
The 1st division is the toughest league in scottish football to get out of AND to play in. As we demonstrated last year a good run can throw you right into the mix for promotion.

I honestly believe the top five in the first division are as good if not better than the bottom five in the SPL, if this were not the case the last 3 or 4 teams relegated from the SPL would have gone straight back up or at least one of them would.

IF we can go about the transfer window with a bit of nonse about us and get on a run who knows ?

The Scottish cup is one of the greatest assets our game has- it's brilliant, and whilst it doesn't throw up as many shocks as it's English counterpart, there's still a great potential. In the last decade Celtic themselves have been knocked out by 1st Division sides 3 times- we should be using every tiny little advantage we have by turning Cappielow into a complete hell-hole for them.

My first thought when the draw was made was that this is the chance for Morton to cause an upset, or at least give them a right run for their money, but no, it seems that the devil's shilling is the priority here. This game is a BONUS to the bank balance, the money should never be accounted for and success on the park should never be compromised for the sake of making a few more quid. The club can bemoan the expenditure that they're shelling out over the season all they want and claim they're trying to make that back but there's a simple solution for that- cut your cloth accordingly and be more prudent. In theory we'd be no worse off than we are at the moment considering we're the worst performing full time club in the country.

I await comment from within Cappielow as to whether this was proposed, although expect those appeals to fall on deaf ears. If infact this is correct, the board are guilty of prostituting the club's integrity for the sake of a couple more quid.

Intricate knowledge of club accounts does not necessarily equate to intricate knowledge of the day to day operational and tactical decision making process within Cappielow. Unfortunately I have been off work unwell today and have no knowledge of this burning issue, other than what has been posted on here. For what it is worth if it is true then I would struggle see how any Director or club official could justify the rationale behind the decision...

If nachonov0king does not come on here and give a good reason as to why he has continually verbaly abused my family for the past few days, admit my wife was harshly dealt with and a fairer result was both to be warned, I will be reporting EVERY slanderous quote made towards my family by him to the moderators and we will see what action - IF ANY - is taken against him.

I disagree with the last point - it's not happening (apparently) so end of conversation.....and I don't hear the Club being slammed by anyone other than a few punters on here. Nor do I see why the Club should defend itself against an allegation which is, at best, conjecture, and, most likely, completely lacking in foundation.

1.I can take a joke and don't mind being slagged as it's usually me slagging myself.

3. Im usually a voice of reason when it comes to Morton, and although lots disagree with what i say (rightly or wrongly) i don't complain about the club for the slightest little things (keeping Dougie on side is a plus point).

I know Bawheid clan from a few years back and whilst they may have divided loyalties, they are a really nice bunch of people. In fact, i bet if the bold NachOrim ever had the pleasure of meeting them he would probably agree and feel like a right knob for being abusive towards them.

I doubt if Mrs Bawheid would be too friendly to him if they ever met now, and trust me, she is a big lassie who could easily knock seven shades of s***e out of him for his cheek.
