Keep/Get Rid Contract Thread

Are there any boys in the youth/reserves that we might use this coming season as back up so we aren't bringing in some journeyman jobbers? I'm not too familiar with them apart from Easdale who I'd happily get rid of in a heartbeat.

I reckon he's another heading for a Kelty, East Kilbride or Darvel type club that are launching money around below the SPFL. I mean, we're talking about a 29 year old who has literally only had one good season in his career (in England's League Two), has a reputation built entirely on the fact he came through at Rangers as a youngster, has done nothing of note since and is now a Clyde reject. That's got marquee signing for a non-league club written all over it.

Chris Erskine the next to drop that way after leaving Livi, East Kilbride the destination.

St Mirren signed two defenders today, I’d certainly take Baird back.

Only one of their signings was a defender and they only have two centre backs other than Baird. Unless they sign another couple he's staying there as cover.

Is McGinty signed?

No, contract runs to 31 July, along with everyone whose deal was expiring this summer.

Even if new signings are still a few weeks away, I'm hoping we'll hear about contract renewals in the next week or so considering that expiry date.

Can see McGinty being offered a new deal. I certainly didn't think he was as bad as some Thistle fans made out but wouldn't want him as a 1st choice next season. If he is a backup, then fair enough.

I guess regarding players like McGinty it’s all about how much of a wage he will be taking out of what sounds like a reduced budget again. I would hope we can bring in at least 2 centre backs that would be ahead of him in the pecking order and therefore he becomes 3rd/4th choice. If that’s the case then his wage needs to be reflective of the role he plays and maybe it would be better suited to a rookie that would be taking less out of our kitty. On the other hand if he stays and is going to be a starter then let’s just hope we have an absolute hero alongside him.

So, the players are now into the last week of their contract under furlough, and not a peep from the club. I'm hoping that with some people returning to week at the club it means that we'll see some movement shortly.

It feels like we haven't heard a thing in weeks from anyone, not even once of those weekly update videos.

With Crawford saying last week that we'd hear about season tickets this week - so an announcement coming today you'd hope - I was hoping for news about contract renewals to be released at the same time.

You'd imagine we'll probably not be back in training until mid-August so if we're not hearing about new signings until then that's fine, but we're surely going to find out about renewals over the next seven days?

We'll be last to the party as usual.

I don't think it's really something to worry about at this point - in relation to the start of the season we're at the equivalent of April in a normal season at the moment.

Obviously you can't entirely think along those lines because if all your competitors go out and sign a whole squad anyway despite being so far away from competitive games you're left with scraps, but Dunfermline are the only side who have. In terms of new signings rather than renewals Ayr have made two, Dundee, Hearts, Raith and Alloa have made one and like us ICT, Arbroath and QoS have none.

We're not hugely behind, and considering the situation it's far riskier than usual to saddle yourself with wages to pay early by signing a whole squad months before competitive games start. Although I suppose it's possible that Dunfermline have announced all those signings with the start dates not officially being until some time in August for that reason.

I don't see what's in it for the players to agree that arrangement with Dunfermline in mid-July though.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Aye, it is more likely that they had started paying them as the deals were announced but it's not out of the question that players who weren't likely to be in demand elsewhere were happy to get something arranged even if it didn't mean immediate payment, particularly if they had a two year deal and longer term security on the table after waiting another month. Agreed that most players wouldn't go for that though.

I can imagine having a solid offer as early as possible and a guaranteed date for the first wage coming in would be enough to clinch it for a few. Others will be in a better situation money wise and can weigh up the risk of waiting longer for a better or more desirable offer to come on.
