  1. I think sending King out on loan would be a mistake. Our squad is fairly small as it is, and he generally contributes when he gets on the park. I can see the point with Garrity but IMHO King is a different kettle of fish. I'd like to see him get more game time though.
  2. There was a clip on twitter or FB or somewhere of Bearne scoring with an overhead kick at the Sinclair Street end during a training session, which suggests they must be training at Cappielow at least some of the time.
  3. Was it not a cost saving measure introduced under the old regime?
  4. Has it been confirmed that Wilson is either signed or being signed?
  5. The difference between Robbie Crawford before coming here and Robbie Crawford now is Dougie Imrie. Who's to say that if Crawford moves elsewhere, he will still perform at the level Imrie has got him to. He has become supercharged, but has he been doing it over a long enough period to convince clubs to sign him? Surely they would want to see him over a longer period before making a move? I'm wondering if this story is just a speculative piece based on the fact that Robbie has scored a few goals already this season, and maybe no coincidence that we are playing Therangers on Saturday so the press are looking at Morton more closely because of that.
  6. I hope the Wilson story is mince. Slow & injury prone IIRC, and not good enough. I hope the Crawford story is also just creative journalism.
  7. I remember in 1976-77 working in Ghana and on a Saturday I happened across football coverage from Scotland on short wave radio. It was a fairly poor signal as short wave usually was (does anyone broadcast on short wave any more?), Kilmarnock v Dunfermline I think it was. Not a game I would ever listen to under normal circumstances but I wanted to hear how Morton got on. The day before I flew out to West Africa, I was at Love Street watching Andy Ritchie (making his debut I think) against St Mirren. Things have moved on a lot since then but when you can't be at the game, being able to find out what's going on is a great morale booster. I think everyone would prefer to be at games in person, but why this mean-spirited attitude to anyone who can't be there in person? It's technically possible and I doubt it costs much to do given that our games are generally being videoed anyway. Those luddites who oppose streaming of games are just in effect directing people to the likes of Sky where they'll get force fed the bigot brothers most weeks.
  8. When I saw the photo of it, my first thought was that it didn't look the same tartan as my original top which I still have. more a tribute act than a proper replica.
  9. Now I remember him. He was utterly appalling.
  10. Have absolutely no recollection of him.
  11. I'm not disagreeing that 7 subs gives more options.I'd be interested to know what size of squad teams had when subs were first introduced - with only a single sub available at that time, the sub had to be versatile as they could end up in almost any position depending on how the team was reconfigured. 4 subs gives you a reasonable chance of covering most positions with someone who has some idea what is required. If we're happy not to have a sub keeper, it's hard to argue that you absolutely must have 6 outfield players on the bench. BTW is a sub keeper allowed to come on to replace an outfield player or are they only allowed to replace the original keeper?
  12. Regarding the “not able to fill the bench” thing, the number of substitutes allowed has increased over the years from zero to whatever it is now, 7 in our league, but do we really need that many? Seems to me that having a smaller number is fine in practice. A keeper and 3 other subs should cover most eventualities. Having more subs maybe gives a bit more flexibility to tailor the tactics and if you have more players available and being paid anyway it probably doesn’t affect costs, but I doubt it really handicaps the team.
  13. Regarding budget, if it’s not being increased to allow for inflation currently in excess of 10%, it’s effectively a significant reduction.
  14. I'll need to think this one through logically. If you start with 12 teams and set up a full 44 game season (4 games against the other 11 teams), then eliminate the fixtures in the 4th quarter that don't happen because of the split (i.e. any fixture in the final part of a "full" season that would be between a top 6 and bottom 6 club) you should be left with a logical post-split fixture list where everyone plays fixtures that mean they end up having played 2 home games and 2 away games against the other teams in their half of the table. Obviously there's an asymmetry about the first 33 games, but it should resolve itself once the final 5 fixtures have been fulfilled, and no team should be playing 3 away league fixtures over the course of the season - obviously the fixtures that are not eliminated post-split will even up the home/away balance for the teams in both upper and lower groups as they are predetermined. Any other arrangement is a fiddle and should be called out. I had never realised that they were doing anything other than following logic.
  15. That chant thing is horrendous. Maybe get the George Oakley "doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy dum" one properly choreographed first...
  16. Doubt he'll grow much before the season starts. Always irks me when I hear people criticising a player for not being tall enough. Two words: Leo Messi. Also Bobby Collins.
  17. I don't really pay much attention to the top division and the fixtures after the split, but I had always assumed that at the split, each team has played every other team three times (either 2 home/1 away or 2 away/1 home), and the remaining fixtures would be based on the teams in each half of the table playing fixtures that meant that they all finished the season having played two home games and two away games against all the sides that finished in the same half of the table as them. I think that is correct because when the post split bit begins, there won't be any pair of teams that have played the same number of home & away games against each other, so the logic of who plays where in the final 5 fixtures is predetermined. Has there ever been a season when any team has played 3 home games and 1 away game against an opponent? Or has that been happening for decades and I've just never noticed?
  18. It’s the luck of the draw. At least it’s not Ross County away every season like we had in cup draws a few years ago.
  19. No, Newton is still alive, or was a few weeks ago. Mortonjag is Ernie Newall IIRC. No idea if he’s still around. He was a doctor I think, hence the name.
  20. No, far from it. During the 63-64 season Iain & I used to kick a tennis ball around in the grounds of the original Greenock Academy after school most days. usually ending in us being chased out the premises by Gus Bell, the jannie. Iain was a goalie, and had hair the colour of Irn Bru, so that might explain a lot - imagine the effect of many years of the Australian sun on a ginger. He emigrated to Oz some time in the mid 60s, and since then I've only ever seen him once, about 17 years ago, but I get the odd email very occasionally. I think his persona on here was probably a wind up. Probably egged on by Ernie Newall who was a regular irritant in the early days of this forum. But Iain was actually an OK guy.
  21. He was in my class at school. He’ll be 71 in September.
  22. I got one of the blue polo shirts recently. Normally get large but even the medium is verging on too big. I wouldn’t buy anything without trying it on for size first.
  23. I think Newton is still alive and kicking in Oz. Don’t know if he’s still on here in some shaper or form.
  24. That shade of blue looks much better.
