CM48 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Off the Ball were talking about the quickest goal ever today which sparked a memory of Andy Ritchie having the ball rolled 2ft to him at kick-off v Motherwell (1982?) and Hugh Sproat having to tip it over the bar at the Wee Dublin End. This surely would have been as quick as a goal could have been scored had it not been saved. But as always with distant memories I do wonder if I’m exaggerating or even completely making it up? ( I was only 10) Anyone else remember this? While we’re at it, anyone remember a truly tragic own goal featuring Alex Miller with an attempted overhead kick clearance followed by comedy goalkeeping by Graham Kyle? (Who I also remember as generally awful). Perhaps less memorable but would be good to have it confirmed. And finally while we’re here, that Chic Charley goal for Dumbarton. I remember it being just inside our half over at the touchline and it looking like a proper shot as soon as he hit it, straight as an arrow to the top corner, not a big looping lob like a Beckham. And Wylie not really being too far off his line? Possibly the best strike of a ball I’ve ever seen in the flesh. Or again, am I exaggerating?

This is the only one I can definitively remember, it was pretty much as you described it. Only time I can remember everyone in the cowshed applauding an opponent's goal. Probably the best goal I've seen live. 1
Albundy Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I remember Andy Ritchie doing something similar at Parkhead against Celtic he shot from the half way line against the wind right into the top corner. It was some strike even the Celtic fans applauded if I remember right it unfortunately it got chalked off for another Morton player being offside. 1
The Bewilderedbeast Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I seem to remember a midweek game v St Johnstone when we started with 10 players on the park. Ritchie had been held up in traffic apparently. After 2/3 mins he appeared and slowly ambled to the edge of the WDE penalty box and picked up a pass, looked up and passed the ball into the corner of the net. Of course that could all be a figment of my imagination. 1
axeman Posted January 11 Posted January 11 (edited) The Motherwell game was a 3-1 win, and that shot was at the start of the second half. As you said, Sproat managed to scramble back to put it out for a corner The own goal I remember from Miller's time, was when Davie Hayes was chasing back and played a passback to Kyle, who had decided to run out to the edge of the box on the right. The ball went past him, he chased back, the ball hit the far post rebounded back off Kyle and into the goal. Edited January 11 by axeman 1 I'd love to have you both for dinner

Wylie was well off his line too. Can remember applauding a Cowdenbeath goal which was an 18 yard overhead kick at the WDE. 1 Fresh stain on the floor when I moved in. He may have checked out short of a useful amount of blood.

I might just have jumped to Miller as he seemed to be a bit past it as a player but still started most games when he became manager, so my memories of him playing are fairly negative.

The only goal I really remember clapping for an opposing team at Cappielow was for Clyde when we played them in the cup and I think Wylie was in goal for them? But I also think we were 3 or 4 up at the time so it didn't really matter and it was a peach of a curling strike into the top corner.
Tomaton54 Posted January 11 Posted January 11 I am aware of passing years and the effect on my emory but here goes. Kick off at Cappielow playing towards the Wee Dublin end. Goldthorp to Ritchie. Ritchie out to the right wing where Bobby Russell collected and crossed. Goldthorp met the cross, nodded down and Ritchie put it in the net. &&/&* season? Opponents? Parkhead offside goal was because Jim Tolmie was a foot inside the Celtic half on the left wing.

I suspect I'm going further back than you but can anyone else remember a goal scored by John Boyd (fullback) from his own penalty-box and no...it wasnt an o.g. Cant remember the opponents .

TRVMP Posted January 11 Posted January 11 The one I remember was the 6-4 win vs. Arbroath. I recall Scott Bannerman scoring from at least 35 yards. It looked like it was going miles over but dipped at the last second at the Sinclair Street end and went in. I recall it being one of the best strikes I'd ever seen. Am I misremembering?

He did score a 40 yard effort give us a late 3-2 win over Bronshoj Boldklub in a friendly. 2 minutes ago, TRVMP said: The one I remember was the 6-4 win vs. Arbroath. The other was this one in our first game of the season in 2001-02 against Stenny, when DDFR had taken over. Apologies for the poor quality. Cet Homme Charmant Posted January 11 Posted January 11 4 hours ago, AyrshireTon said: It was a wonder goal, but I didn't applaud that because it was Charnley He was an archetypal 'mercurial genius' (read as technically very gifted 'character' who's more interested in the fags and booze than training) who were very common back then. I didn't like him either, but in a pantomime villain kind of way. I applauded the goal because of the awareness and execution, which very few other players could even dream of. Has to be said though, O'Hallaran's overhead kick against Queen's Park a few weeks ago was as good as any from back then. If Andy Ritchie has scored it, it would still be eulogised to this day.

Gordon Ritchie Posted January 11 Posted January 11 If I remember correctly Andy shot from the half way line after the kick off on his only Scotland u-23 (maybe u-21) cap as an overage player. I think it was just over the bar.
