LargsTON Posted September 17 Posted September 17 Why does the quality of our squad seem to decrease each time the budget is increased? "CORNBEEF IS A BELLEND"

I wouldn't say the quality has decreased. Boyes and Crawford are missed, but JET, McGinn and Broadfoot would've struggled in League 2. 1

Sounds more like a case of your expectations increasing at a greater rate than squad quality. At this point last season we were still winless but had already been beaten twice, and as Topcat mentions above we had some absolutely honking players in the squad who were way worse than anything we have in the squad at the moment. Not saying everything’s perfect - clearly there’s a lot of room for improvement but it’s early days yet and based on the squad we have I fully expect us to get better as the season goes on

I've thought for a long time that one of the reasons that we've managed to compete so well with a lower budget is because a bigger budget at this level (unless it is much bigger) tends to give teams more depth rather than more quality. Or, at least, the quality doesn't increase by the same amount as the budget increases because there aren't much better players out there waiting for a bit more money. That's why you get teams like Dunfermline or Partick in recent years who end up with bigger squads than us but not much more quality. And also why it's very easy to spend the money poorly. We've now got Comrie as well as Ballantyne. There probably similar in terms of quality but there's now cover. We've got extra midfielders, but nothing significantly better. We've managed to bring in Brophy, where otherwise it might just have been Adeloye. Over a full season it should make a difference, but it won't if we've spent poorly and it's always going to be difficult to greatly improve the core quality of a starting 11 (unless there's a huge increase in budget). The evidence is there from lots of other teams at this level that it's difficult to greatly increase the quality of a team. 5
RossMcC1874 Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Like others have said I dont think the quality of the squad has increased even with extra players. We lost both centre backs and imo replaced them with two with less quality and experience at this level, even if Moore has showed some early promise. Our midfield is pretty much the same albeit I think Macpherson will add some quality but the performances of other players in there hasn't been brilliant ie Wilson. Upfront Brophy is good and will score goals as he has already proven but I would bite your hand off for Stuparevic back. Our wingers are still inconsistent sand dancers so that has stayed the same. It's still early in the season I'm hopefully we will come good there is still 5 teams without a win so nothing to panic about just yet.
vikingTON Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Brophy is comfortably better than Stuparevic, who was like Adeloye only with a free pass for not doing much other than finishing the odd chance (putting the two of them together, as tried for 3 minutes before they both got injured last season, would have been a disaster). The depth is better but there are two key areas of the team that are not better and are having a huge impact on how we can play: centre backs who cannot reliably deal with nothing balls; the diabolical output of all wingers - (who by playing also weaken central midfield). The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before.. So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

There was so much expectation around sections of the support the last time we were told we had increased the budget. Many oblivious to the fact that it didn't necessarily make us more competitive when even the likes of Ayr had started chucking money around with far bigger budget increases than we had.
