Partick v Ton - Sat 3rd August 2024

Recommended Posts

Surprised this hasn't been started before now. New season kicks off tomorrow with arguably one of the toughest games we could have had. Hoping our injuries clear up. Theres a few questions going into the game: Will Boyes and Baird be back? Will JET start?

For the season ahead. Where's Nathan Shaw? Are we going to continue to persevere with the new style of play? Will we see more ins and outs in the squad?

With everyone fit and available my team would be -

                  Mullen

Ballantyne Baird Boyes Delaney

            Wilson    Blues

Garrity     Lyall     Moffat

                  Davies

Bench- Woods, Broadfoot, King, Gillespie, O'Boy, Reynolds, JET

We really need another defender or 2 in and a midfielder at the very least.

Having watched Partick on Sunday it's going to be a tough game but they were wasteful in front of goal.  Its a sore one to see Robbie Crawford in a partick top and to be playing against us if hes fit. Will go into the game optimistic and hopefully someone takes that prick Graham out early doors.

And for that I can't see the sun

For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement

Massive game and like you said one of the toughest away games, shite record up there but who knows.

Thought Garrity made a really good impact I felt when coming on in the last game but think Reynolds will probably start.

Hopefully the likes of Boyes and Baird are fit the absolutely fear if Broadfoot is playing. I've not been overly impressed with Delaney and with the quality of their wingers both full backs need to be solid.

Can't see Jet starting but hopefully gives us something off the bench. Still would like a midfielder at least and would imagine there would be still a few coming in and maybe a few out on loans.

From middle to front I think the team picks itself. Wilson & Gillespie sitting, Moffat, Lyall & Garrity behind JET. The only question mark there would be whether Imrie wants to put Shaw straight into the starting XI if he's available but that'd be a big risk.

Even if both Baird & Boyes are missing and we therefore need to have a midfielder in defence (and even if only one of them is missing I'd prefer a midfielder back there than Broadfoot on the park), then despite Wilson being a better defender I'd rather we put Blues to right back and rejig the rest of the defence from there. Wilson is too important to the midfield to do without him, particularly against a team with their quality.

We don't seem to be expected to take anything from this game, but with Morton, you never know.  Be nice if Brian Graham could get another red card to add to his collection and we sneak the three points.

I'd be tempted to go for a team something like this tomorrow. Either that or Garrity in for either Blues or Lyall (and adjust accordingly). Feel like we need to be as solid as possible. Let Lyall and Moffat have the freedom to play with a solid midfield 3 supporting them. If JET isn't fit to start then I'd go with Reynolds rather than Davies. Neither have particularly impressed but I thought Reynolds had a bit more presence up there last week to play off of.

Replace Blues with Garrity and move Lyall into cm in Blues’ place and I’d agree with that team.

Sadly missing this one. Dougie keeping his cards close to his chest regarding player availability. Partick are favourites for the title so it’s going to be difficult, but I think we can take something if we have Boyes and Baird available and in decent shape.

If they both play, I’ll go for 1-1, Garrity and JET off the bench to rescue a point after we go behind to a self inflicted Brian Graham goal, again.

Resigned myself to accepting that Broadfoot will start. He's not going to risk starting 2 players coming back from injury especially if that big donkey is fit.

Blues no doubt starts as he always does, needs to start performing consistently, too many times he does feck all.

I'd chuck the Jet in from the start, see what he can do.

Strangely looking forward to this, 1st game of the season for me, I doubt the optimism  will last much more than 15 minutes though.

Wilson having Lyall beside him rather than Gillespie or Blues against their midfield is a kamikaze team selection, regardless of my thoughts on the players in front of them.
