Alibi Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Shocking result. A 1-0 defeat to a 4th tier club could be put down to a bad day at the office but 3-0 is a gubbing. Something very amiss. Can’t all be put down to Broadfoot. "Any nation given the opportunity to regain its national sovereignty and which then rejects it is so far beneath contempt that it is hard to put words to it."
TRVMP Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Queen's Park made huge noises early last season about a coherent style of play right through the club, hired that Dutch charlatan to do it, and got absolutely rode trying to play it out from the back with a team of young guys. I don't for one minute think that's what's happening here - that is I don't think there's a cringe attempt to develop the "Morton style" or anything and I especially doubt that if there was it would be board-mandated. That, for me, is good news. Imrie's been on a horrific win less run at Cappielow before and not only survived but thrived. I'm confident the same will happen this time but I think we'll see a few casualties along the way. Morton

He's got plenty of credit in the bank to ride out a dodgy spell, but there are two clear differences right now compared to previous circumstances: 1) There was always a default way of playing that would allow us to grind out results until things came good. I don't believe that we actually need a target man like Ugwu or Oakley necessarily to play aggressive pressing football, but they certainly offered an obvious focal point for just such a 2-0 down scenario as Imrie discusses in the post-match interview today. What was the realistic plan B for that lineup today - pumping balls into the channels for Davies/Reynolds to chase? EF would simply sit deeper and shut up shop if they had to in order to shut down that threat. Though given Bearne was being touted as a potential starter, the red flags about the actual quality of our new attacking talent were already there to see. 2) Unlike the similarly abysmal defeat to Clyde a couple of seasons ago, this isn't GMFC rocking up to the League Cup with 12 players and a ringer sub goalkeeper. The vast majority of our first team squad is in place and has been together for some time. Indeed our chief executive spun arranging a series of stinking turd pre-season fixtures as necessary to get the players to gel against competitive opposition. What was the demonstrable effect of playing a parade of border bumpkin outfits at Cappielow? To lose an obvious banana skin game like this is not the issue. It is the manner of the defeat that is risible. The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before.. So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are
TRVMP Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Point 2 is a concern, absolutely. The squad is near enough closed, with space for one or maybe two players. Davies and Reynolds are going to need time but if we're not in better shape in a month's time this could end up a Moore-seque shame campaign. Morton
tondaft1874 Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 That was really, really bad yesterday. Delaney hasn't impressed me at all so far. Thought he was poor in his trial games and again yesterday had shelled the ball out the park 3x in the first 5 minutes. Ballantyne wasn't much better any opportunity he got to cross didn't beat the first man. Broadfoot is finished. I've got nothing against him as he gives his all every game but his legs have gone to compete at this sort of level. Him and the club need to come to an agreement and end his contract. Also have extreme doubts over Baird's capability to play in this sort of way which is probably why we seen him start on the bench. Agree with a lot of others Davies should be through the middle with Reynolds out wide, you can see he his very uncomfortable with his back to goal. I thought Davies has looked much better though the middle when played there during pre season.
dunning1874 Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 At the time I said the first goal was on Boyes and Delaney through failing to clear their lines - while that's still true and it was poor from both of them, seeing this back again you do actually have to blame Broadfoot just as much for that goal as well. He has the opportunity to stay with Trouten and just lets him go. Abysmal. Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Oh Lord, Brian Wake
HamCam Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 That was torture watching it back. How many chances did we have to simply clear our lines for the first? As for Broadfoot at the second it is a penalty waiting to happen as he never, when he is defending a corner, looks at the ball, he almost always has his hands around an opposition player. As for the third it was naïve from Davies to allow his man to cut back inside to get the shot away. In hindsight we were lucky it was only three.
Mr.Blue Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 Broadfoot has a hand in conceding all 3 goals. 1st goal not tracking trouten, second he is rightly pulled up for an obvious foul ( something he gets away woth most weeks) and the 3rd he steps back and passes trouten on rather than take responsibility of the situation. Not what you'd expect from a player with his experience and our captain for the day. There's a storm on the horizon And for that I can't see the sun For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement For the ice cream van to come

That's completely on Broadfoot trying to hand off his man to Davies so that he could follow the player Davies was tracking. No wonder he was subbed after doing that - shocking from a player of his experience. Maybe if you're way out wide you can try that, but not in there - he hands him the shooting opportunity and tries to leave Davies on the hook for it. Add the penalty he gave away, as well as some other pieces of defending, and it really doesn't look good for Broadfoot. I don't want to single him out, because it was awful pretty much all round, but he's had a nightmare yesterday.
TopCat Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 A truly laughable series of errors for the goals. As for Broadfoot, he was every bit as bad as this at the start of last season and took a good number of games to get up to speed. We won't be able to just chuck the first quarter away again though, something needs to be done about it before the league starts.

I thought Broadfoot was good in the League Cup last season, it was when the league season started and he was facing Championship opposition every week that it became clear he was out of his depth against that standard of opponent, getting progressively worse as the season went on. That he's now looking absolutely horrendous against a League Two team when he had no trouble against sides of that calibre last season doesn't bode well. Tubes Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 That was a tough watch. Massive improvement needed for Tuesday if we are wanting to progress in this competition.
Toby Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 To be honest, I think we can forget about progress already. If you’re going to progress as one of the best second placed teams (especially given there’s only three, and no four going through now, you can just about afford a defeat against the top seeds and that’s your lot. Yesterday’s result, and the implications it could have given that last season’s trip to Ibrox boosted the coffers so much, was extremely damaging. We’ll have to pick up nine points from the other three games imho, and even still we’re really pushing it. We could even find ourselves finishing third on nine points.
vikingTON Posted July 14, 2024 Posted July 14, 2024 If we beat Saint Johnstone then nine points stands a decent chance of winning the group. EF may have something to say about that themselves, as I can see then having a very good league campaign and could easily beat the other two non diddies. We have to win in 90 minutes and not drop anything in our two home games, which I wouldn't take for granted either. But it's not done yet. How we perform next Saturday is important in assessing the overall level of this squad either way. Ferguson Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 If we're to have any hope of qualifying it has to be an absolute pumping tomorrow to make up the goal difference, which we look far from capable of at the minute. Brechin seem to be a stubborn outfit as well given their showing at the weekend. I find it a bit bizarre that we're going with Davies out wide, surely you'd want the guy who scored 26 goals last season in and around the box. He's been quite ineffective defensively as well so I'd like to see him get a run of games up front at least until we've brought in a proper number 9. Hopefully see Garrity, Gillespie and Baird in from the start too.
RossMcC1874 Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 Needs to be a massive improvement if we have any slight hope of progressing. Changes need to be made also Blues was really poor and I think Gillespie should get a start. Baird must be in ahead of Broadfoot there can be absolutely no justification for playing him. Thought Garrity made an impact aswell wouldn't mind him getting a start. I'm not going to write Davies and Reynolds off after one game there was obviously a reason Imrie brought them here particularly with Davies the fact he was signed way back in January.
SassenachTon Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 When I was a young wee laddie in the 70's - Brechin City were the fitba joke of the world. They were the most shite team on the planet. The team who my maw and her dug could beat. A defeat to these, following a 3-0 drubbing by a 4th-tier side would absolutely crush me. Just sayin' I'll get mah coat ....

Mr.Blue Posted July 16, 2024 Posted July 16, 2024 Would like to see some changes tonight but I'll put a disclaimer in there that Dougie won't change a lot. Broadfoot has to be dropped although going by Saturday most of the team could join him. Mullen Ballantyne Baird Boyes Delaney Gillespie Wilson Garrity Lyall Moffat Davies Murdoch/ Woods, Broadfoot, Blues, Oboy, Bearne, Reynolds. We haven't had any word on corr, King or Shaw but I know Corr was training before the game on Saturday which is promising. Squad is crying out for a number 9 with experience of this league and an absolute cunt in the middle of the park.
