I'd even argue that, historically,  championship teams having any degree of promotion success playing neat and tidy passing football is vanishingly rare. Other than a couple of really good St Johnstone sides and Hearts (with their huge budget), I struggle to think of many in my lifetime who have played attractive football and won the league. Even Rangers attempted to play 'the right way' at first, which was a clownshoes disaster.

I'd agree with that.

For this style of possession and passing play to work you obviously need players who are comfortable on the ball, can effortlessly make perfectly weighted and directed passes, and can also time runs into spaces to receive these passes. I've got no idea if these skills are being taught to kids in Scotland, but if not, then trying to impose that style of play on players who haven't learned it from an early age is always going to be a challenge.

Personally I'd say it's being  encouraged and taught in some teams. All dependent on the coaches. Even at that a lot of the passing, moving into space etc approaches are forgotten about Once teams go competitively to 11s.

There's a storm on the horizon

And for that I can't see the sun

For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement

For the ice cream van to come

More importantly, for it to work, being effective without the ball and solid in defense is equally as important. Neither of which we've nailed as yet.

I agree with all of the above points but this is the most pressing issue for me. Our front 3, possibly excluding Moffat, don't get close to anyone off the ball. Got quite frustrated watching Reynolds jogging back every time the full back went by him on Saturday. Once they're by the front 3 it's then not very difficult to break us down.

Both this and our current lack of a striker that poses a threat in the box will cost us a lot more than our ability to hold onto the ball will. I'm inclined to give the new lads time, but Davies saying in the tele that he's happy with his input so far worries me.

Imrie has probably realised that he won't get a better job elsewhere by playing long ball, industrial football so has attempted to get his team playing a more modern, passing game. As has been said we don't seem to have the players atm to execute that style. We also lack a spine to the team and need Broadfoot replaced, a playmaker signed and obviously desperately short of a centre forward. I'd suggest unless the aforementioned signings are made we are heading for relegation. Which won't help Mr Imrie get himself a better job.

I see no reason to exclude Moffat from that description.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

What should we do on Saturday? Realistically we are finishing fourth in the table no matter the result. Do you play the same team as against St Johnstone (subject to injuries), or should we start some of the youngsters? There’s a decent young central defender among the kids signed, but he’s only 17 or 18. We could start Murdoch in goal and O’Boy and Keay up front.

What would you do if you were Imrie?

As a dead rubber it's a chance to view it as a further extension of pre-season which the League Cup shouldn't normally be - so strongest team possible if we're still buying that results and performances to date can be explained by "the players need time to gel" rather than "some of the new signings are actually as shite as their performances so far suggest." St Johnstone's result tonight certainly tells us something about our failure to lay a glove on them.

That precludes throwing a group of weans like Keay in, but at this point it's a low risk opportunity to find out if some random 17 year old can possibly contrive to be as terrible as Broadfoot for a fourth choice centre back. There is no such thing as a strong lineup with him in it in the first place so throwing someone in there for the one first teamer everyone can agree is obviously miles off being good enough wouldn't be unreasonable in a game that doesn't matter. He's already a lost cause and it's a big rejig with out of position players to pick a defence without him otherwise.

Hard to argue with how bad Reynolds has been that he's seriously making anyone's strongest XI just now either, but the likes of Davidson shouldn't be getting first team appearances in his place before someone like King who's actually part of the first team and is short on games. Davies probably still defaults into the lineup through having no alternative assuming no signings before Saturday, unless you go for some gamble like Garrity through the middle because he played there a few times for Annan.

None of that.

Can trialists play in the League Cup? If so, I wonder if we will see JET (if it’s him right enough) get a run out.

No.

Dunning pretty much nails it for me there, my only change to the start 11 would be Woods in goal. Mullen hasn't really looked himself so far and it would be good to have a look at his competition before the league starts. We can use the last half hour or so to test the fringe players if Imrie feels they're worth a look.

Obviously it's mathematically a dead rubber but it's still important that we put in a good performance and get a result to soften the blow ahead of the league starting next week.

Hardly a dead rubber - if Alloa beat us, they win the group. If we win, East Fife will top the group if they avoid defeat at St. Johnstone.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Well I'm sure that their three fans celebrating will add to the atmosphere, but I'll not be paying £15 for this one.

It would be stupid to field anything other than our strongest possible team against a side who will be going all out to win.

Will there be a stream of today’s game?
