RossMcC1874 Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I think we have actually played quite well in spells Moffat and Delaney looking good on the left, the midfield for me has been our weakest area need a bit more in there. Broadfoot at fault for the goals is no surprised he is finished at this level and I am just glad we have other options in that position as he simply isn't good enough. We also lack a real poacher or natural striker far to often Reynolds has been drifting out wide with no real threat in the box.

We've created plenty of chances. It's not been a bad performance at all given the gulf between the two teams. Morton
port-ton Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Plenty of positive signs in that half that progress is being made on what we are trying to do this season. Broadfoot has struggled and they’ve cut us open a few times but they’re a decent premiership team and we have a team of new players so that’s to be expected. its so strange watch a Morton team not lump the ball up the pitch at the first opportunity but it’s good to watch. We’ve had good possession and interchanges against strong opposition and we’ve still got that edge about us where we press well and win tackles . I’m still not convinced we are clinical enough with the squad we have yet but that’s an issue for most teams in the league. result aside that’s just about as good a runout as the team could hope for in the build up to the real stuff coming up. Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but only with religion do good people do bad things!
Ferguson Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Quite good on the ball here, but although Broadfoot is almost wholly to blame for both goals the whole team looks a bit disjointed out of possession. Plenty of encouraging signs but this is definitely looking like a season too many for big Kirk.
dunning1874 Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Retracting my previous stance on this game not mattering at all if it can get Broadfoot banished back to the Lowland League. Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Brian Wake my Lord, Brian Wake Oh Lord, Brian Wake
TONofmemories Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Have to hope we're not going into this season with the intention of him being a mainstay. TIME FOR CHANGE!
TRVMP Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Some 8 foot tall skunk totally unmarked at a deep free kick. Morton

port-ton Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Second half a total non event but some more minutes in to the legs of everyone. we have played well vs better teams than us the past couple of years by stopping them from playing their game however that’s not going to happen anymore so I found the first half promising that we imposed ourselves on them. Definitely some issues to fix but that’s to be expected. Last year we had such a settled style and squad that we could bring on a tiktoker and still pump them but there’s not a single person in that squad whether new signing or not that isn’t having to learn what Imrie wants from them this season. We definitely need someone in to compete with Gillespie. He can definitely still do a job but can also look laboured and sloppy at times and we saw both sides in the first half. He’s rarely fit all season either and we don’t really have anyone else to go in to that position to take ball off defenders and spray passes about. Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but only with religion do good people do bad things!
RossMcC1874 Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Would have been nice to win but not overly fussed about a glorified friendly. Second half the less said the better don't think their keeper made a save mind you they weren't much better. Few players like Delaney and Moffat stood out for me along with Boyes who is comfortable on the ball and composed, Reynolds and Davies worked their socks off but with little end product Broadfoot should be nowhere this squad and I only hope we don't have to play him that much. Still need another as a front man as to often as had option up there, midfielder won't go a miss either we did improve with Wilson but still feel we need something else in there.
tondaft1874 Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Second half was a non-event but thought we were good 1st half created a lot of chances. Some great play especially down the left hand side. Boyes looks a great addition comfortable on the ball and good balance in there with him being left footed. Thought Davies looked more of a threat through the middle 2nd half. Jack Bearne frustrates the life out of me, clearly got talent but needs a rocket up his arse to get moving.
irnbru Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Thought Boyes looked a bit uncomfortable defensively although decent on the ball rather than it just being Broadfoot that was the problem. We were good in spells in the first half and Wilson looked good so would say it was encouraging overall against a team who's preparing for playing in Europe.

Bit far. Booing the team in a pre-season friendly, which btw i don't agree we should be entertaining, is a bit cringe. Sets the tone and could potentially drive a wedge between the players and fans from the outset. It's just a bit weird behaviour. TIME FOR CHANGE!
mcintyre_gmfc Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 First half we were okay, Davies and Reynolds worked hard with very little service. Boyes was good overall, composed and aggressive. Broadfoot just isn’t worth a jersey, he simply cannot be playing when the real stuff comes around. Agree with the above post re Bearne, he has some talent but genuinely looks like he can’t be arsed, and Dougie didn’t seem too happy with him either.

Surely our first choice central midfield pairing is Wilson and Blues? Wilson does the job you describe and Gillespie and King would be the competition/backup as it stands.
Mr.Blue Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Not going to look too much into that tonight. Can see what Dougie and the team are trying to do and it will time to embed the new style of play and ideas. Pains me to say it but we have to remember that St. Mirren are an established premiership team. They were fitter over the 90s mins and more clinical on front of goal. Defensively I thought we looked ok. Both fullbacks will be good additions. Don't like to be negative but Broadfoot cannot start if Boyes, Corr and Baird are fit. Gillespie was his usual self on the ball. Calm and assured although he did tire and is always prone to an error or 2. Blues worked hard as well but we looked better when shut came on. Still think we need an experienced, physical presence in there. Davies worked hard but looked much more comfortable centrally. Reynolds worked hard and made a couple of good runs but he lacked a first touch and composure. Moffat and Lyall are both ballers and we need to hope they can produce the good consistently. Garrity looked lively when he came on. Didnt see much of Bearne. Positives were how we tried to move the ball about and the chances we made however we need to be more clinical up front and tighter defensively as a team. There's a storm on the horizon And for that I can't see the sun For I'll keep a waiting on the pavement For the ice cream van to come

Perhaps last year I’d agree but I think Gillespie will start most games when he’s fit in this system as what is being asked of that position this year isn’t something that I’d consider to be the strongest parts of Wilson and Blues’ games. Wilson could do a job in there but then you lose his driving runs from midfield. I can see it being between Wilson and Blues for a starting spot with Wilson covering at fullback when needed. Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but only with religion do good people do bad things!
DaftTon74 Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 After getting off to a dreadful start, I thought we settled into the game quite well with some flashes of good play. Moffat looked a real spark on the left in the first half. Thought both full backs did well and look sound defensively and comfortable on the ball going forward too. Davies and Reynolds work hard and both seem like the type of players you really want to like and do well (if that makes sense). It was refreshing to see us create actual opportunities instead of feeding off second balls and set plays. Plenty of positives in the first half but also a hell of a lot to work on. It’s not going to be a project that will click over night. We are in for another season full of twists and turns that’s for sure. Second half less said about it the better, non event. Hopefully that is the end of this glorified friendly and we only ever play them again in a competitive game from now on. Second half was a training exercise at best. Can’t wait for the real stuff to start on Saturday.
