I've heard him speaking about this a couple of times. I think the context is that he thinks that every signing should be as part of a plan to push us towards promotion or improve year on year, as opposed to cobbling together a team for championship survival. You could make an argument for e.g. the likes of Power being a part of that but the likes of Midge, Broadfoot etc. fall more into the decent, but seeing out a final season of their career category. I'd argue that the overall transfer strategy isn't something that should sit completely with a first team manager on that basis.
DumfriesTon
Is French not a centre back? I'm sure when he played against us last year that's where he played. Might be a case of not getting the best out of him because he is playing out of position...

How did our recruitment deal with the exact same position last summer? Was Scottish football awash with highly effective full backs, just desperate to join us? While I'd certainly be looking to upgrade on French (a largely competent Championship player, but no more based on this season at least) we should also recognise that we can and indeed often do end up with far worse in that position. It's a position we need to upgrade if we are serious about progressing to the next level and making our attacking play less one dimensional, but the same applies to several teams in the division who will be fighting over the same player or two. The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before.. So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are
SpoonTon
French has been quite typical of the quality of right back we've had at this level. That's not a compliment.

The one thing he is good at is getting back in front of a wide player using his pace if they’re on the counter attack. He’ll pick up a decent wage non-league down in England, but I’d be disappointed if we didn’t look to improve on him for next season. If he was as good as Dundee fans said he was, the injury has clearly done him as a player. At fault for the goal last night, again.
