Anyone heard how Duncan Ferguson's Inverness are getting on lately?

Played three, drawn two, lost one.

Not the best starts, granted, however they'll still be there or thereabouts at the top end of the table at the end of the season.  And if they aren't then I'm not that bothered as I dont support them.  I genuinely thought (and still think) that he could be a good football manager.  And if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.  I'll admit it.  I'm not that bothered about it.

I wasn't writing off the guy after a handful of games at a basketcase of a club who have burned their way through several managers in recent times, whereas you were.

There’s an irony in Paul trying to differentiate between “an over-achieved non-league outfit who are past their peak” and fucking Inverness.

Good one.  I saw this video recently and it looks like their new 'owner' is a Walter Mitty:

Roy Keane also failed as a manager despite being the most single-minded, winning-attitude midfielder of his era. It just happens sometimes. Either they can't communicate to the players, or their style of play just doesn't work (this seems to be Dunc's situation - endless passing around, very unlike the way he actually played the game), or both.

I wouldnt say Roy Keane's management career was particularly a failure.  He won the English Championship in his first season and in his second season managed to keep a newly promoted team in the Premiership, which is no mean feat.  His time at Ipswich had mixed fortunes, however they were always thereabouts midtable in the Championship.

There are worse than him that never get described as a failure.

Frank Lampard for a start.

He's an English sell-out though, which is particularly amusing. Happy to take the GBP..

Who?  Roy Keane or Alibi?

Who is out here defending Frank Lampard and not calling him a failed manager? The most you'll see is people saying he needed to bide his time at Derby before going to the PL, but nobody's going to defend his record.

Well, for a start Graeme Souness wanted him ahead of Phillipe Clement for the Rangers job, and there has also been mention of him as a possible candidate for the England job.  On the basis of what?

He was the first name that sprung to mind, there will be others im sure.  The orcs favourite 'Stevie G' is another one.  Vincent Kompany another one.  Owen Coyle another one.

Overall, Roy Keane's record as a manager isnt all that bad.

Well, the people backing Lampard for the England job are just wrong. Rangers, I don't think it's that bizarre of a shout, even though Clement would be my preference between the two. It's a big step down from Chelsea and even Everton and a chance to rebuild. Not saying I'd give him the job but it's far from the craziest thing I've ever heard. At Derby he did alright, it's when he got too high up the pyramid that his limitations became clear.

I don't know what the situation is with Kompany. I assume Bayern think that he is an able head coach and as long as he has nothing to do with squad building they'll win with him. But it's also worth remembering he was sixth or seventh choice.

It's not just that Keane's record is bad - which it is - it's that unlike Lampard he's completely unwilling to learn from his mistakes and will ensure that he's bigger than the club anywhere he goes because he fundamentally can't get on with people.

A crestfallen giant rotting away in League 1 is just about Lampard's level.  If he wasn't a former England captain he wouldn't even get mentioned for any of the big jobs, let alone get them.

Kompany done well to get Burnley out of the championship but was a disaster in the Premier League as he was unwilling and/or unable to adapt on a game-to-game basis and learn from mistakes which cost them many points over the season.  Incidentally, this is more or less the same thing which you accused of Roy Keane.

Incidentally I looked at Sunderland's managers since Roy Keane, which include several big names including Sam Allardyce, David Moyes, Martin O'Neill, Dick Advocaat, Gus Poyet and more; and none have won anything of note since him.  Go figure.

I am not generally a big fan of this guys videos, but thought this one was worth sharing here as he has a pretty interesting take on this exact subject.  TLDR/TLDW = at a big club which can outspend their rivals (or in Englands case have an embarrasment of riches to call up), being a great tactician etc might be seen as less important than being a good fit for the culture/structure etc.

Stevie May apparently signing for Livi, stolen from under the nose of Partick.

I was hoping he may be a player Imrie could get a tune out of. Hopefully we get one of Kilmarnock’s bench options once they’re out of Europe.

Was apparently signing for Partick, or at least in to have a look, about turned to Livi. Expected to be announced today. I can live with Partick getting fucked over.

TIME FOR CHANGE!

You do realise that this is last season's thread?

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Rangers confirm their League Cup quarter final with Dundee on the 21st September will be at Ibrox.

I’ll be interested to see if this means a change of plan for our game at Queen’s Park on the 14th.
