Match Preview/Thread - Morton vs Dundee (17th February)

It's all been said about Grimshaw already, he's both the best full back and best midfielder in the division at the same time.

Blues and Baird were both immense there. Blues offered absolutely everything you need from a box to box player in that second half, his workrate was ridiculous.

Even in having possibly his least effective game of the season with the ball at his feet where very little came off, McGrattan's defensive contribution was again tremendous. You could really see it when he switched to the right a couple of minutes after Quitongo went off, where Dundee had pinned Pignatiello back for the whole passage of play prior to it. They didn't get down that side again once for the rest of the time McGrattan was on.

Pignatiello's deserving of praise as well, to bounce back from that Arbroath game and the public stick he took takes some character and he was far more like the solid full back we saw at the start of the season, as well as an excellent contribution to the goal. In real time in person it looked like he was just dangling a leg wildly and hoping to connect, but seeing it back it's actually a really good ball.

Nonetheless Jamie..... I have a horrible feeling Dougie might be getting some inviting phone-calls tonight/tomorrow.

Aberdeen will not be looking at him, hell would freeze over before Motherwell would look at him, and there's no way he would either go to Partick right now or they would pay the  compensation to try to land him.

He is contracted to the end of next season with it converting to 1 year rolling beyond that. Doubt we could wish for any more secure than that.

Well that was the perfect end to a rather shitty week!  Not much better than getting it right up Dundee especially as their mob on P&B are insufferable.

wont add much as everyone else has pretty much nailed it. Just hope next season if Grimshaw doesn’t stay he gets a move to the Premiership (if we don’t go up 😉) would hate to have to play against him next season

Wish we could play for the bbc cameras every week, we always seem to put on a decent show for them!

here today, gone to hell

That was superb. We absolutely battered them first half and could have been out of sight. That Blues shot was terrific, the way he chested the ball to set up the shot. Jai’s effort in the second half that hit the bar/post deserved a goal. Baird was imperious, Grimshaw was Beckenbaueresque, the whole team just gave everything. We seemed to sit deeper as the game went on but there weren’t a lot of heart in mouth moments.

Disappointed we don’t have a games this afternoon. 6 points out of 6 against the top two is some going. Let’s keep this going and win this league.

11/15 against them in the league overall.

5/18 against the bottom two.

Do we get an update on McGratten / no McGratten stats? Can’t even remember which thread it was in.

Thought we were excellent last night. The players knew how to limit Dundee's use of their possession and threw themselves at everything. Grimshaw and Baird were standouts. Agree with others about Blues too.

These ground-out 1-0 games can be vital over the course of a season.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Fantastic result. Bodies on the line and ever player ran themselves into the ground. Thought Blues was terrific but Liam Grimshaw was unbelievable. An absolute masterclass on how to play the holding midfield role.

Cowshed was bouncing and that new George Oakley song is a belter.

This league is here for the taking.

What was the Oakley song?  Couldn't really make it out on tele.

It was to the tune of Doo-Wah-Diddy by Manfred Mann. Sounded something like -

Here he comes wearing white and blue (not entirely sure of that line)

Here he comes and he's scoring one or two (again, not sure)

Looks good, looks good

Looks Fine, looks fine

George Oakley number nine, and he's scoring all the time

Doo-Wah Diddy...

Imrie's pre-match interview with the BBC identified the draw at Inverness as a key result to kick-start our revival - which it was. After the game, he was immediately bemoaning that we didn't beat Inverness to get 9/9 points.

There's no actual inconsistency between those two statements: Imrie just sets the benchmark higher and higher with the rising confidence levels and performances within the squad. He knows (95% of the time) exactly what buttons to push to deflect criticism from the players when playing poorly as well as to kick on once we win. The Patrick shambles was used as ammunition for the rest of 2022. Sometimes it seems harsh or ruthless on individual players like McGrattan, but you cannot argue with the outrageous impact it's having on the squad and the football club as a whole.

The man is a damn prodigy.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

What is becoming more and more obvious is that his enthusiasm and man management skills are backed by a real tactical understanding of the game. He makes mistakes and learns from them, he has a really high ceilling but hopefully the fact he isn't a fashionable name will let us keep him for another season before his inevitable rise up the ranks.**

**he also has the chance to take us through the ranks himself, thanks to his own hard work.

That’s why I was a bit concerned when I heard James McFadden’s response when asked why Dougie’s name doesn’t come up for new vacancies whilst others do. Faddy said Dougie would be his choice over all the other names. It was also a great comment from big Marcus when he said Morton play as a team in Dougie’s image. People must be taking notice so I hope he’s happy to stay for a while yet.

Need to get him to swap shirts with Muirhead. Oakley’s 22… Or just sing George Oakley 22 so that it fits.
