An injury ravaged Morton Women squad fell 3-1 to Hutchison Vale on Sunday afternoon at Parklea. The opening exchanges were even, with The Ton growing into the game as the half wore on. Academy graduate Louise Hughes opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Morton attacked up their right hand side before Sandra Craig slipped in Hughes on the left side of the box, Hughes then smashed the ball into the top right hand corner to open her account for The Ton.

Captain Rachael McConnachie, The Ton’s only substitute due to a combination of injury and COVID call-offs, was introduced to the action at half time as Gary Forbes’ side looked to increase their control over the match. Despite dominating for large spells of the second period, and having a penalty shout waved away, the away side equalised in the 74th minute as a deflected corner was turned home by Hutchie Vale. The Edinburgh side took the lead two minutes later in dubious circumstances. After a 50/50 collision, goalkeeper Asha Cains was on the ground requiring treatment, however play continued and the loose ball was turned into the net from close range. As Morton pushed forward searching for an equaliser, the Capital side struck with an incisive counter attack in the 83rd minute to put the match beyond doubt.

Speaking after the game, manager Gary Forbes spoke of his frustration at conceding three late goals – “I think we will be really disappointed with the result, and more so the last fifteen minutes of the game up to that point. We felt we had done enough in the game to be winning but credit to Hutchison Vale who made life tough for us and done enough late on the game to take the three points. I have to give Louise credit for taking her first senior goal very well. Going into next week we will be looking for reaction from the players”.

After grabbing her first senior goal for the club, Louise Hughes said – “It was great to get off the mark for the club today and hopefully the next one won't be far away. Unfortunately it's the result that matters most and that didn't go our way today.”

Morton (4-2-3-1) – Cains (GK), Hickey, Dolan, Marshall, Cumberbatch, Campbell (c), Haggerty, Hughes (off 46’), Craig, Darroch, Rankin.

Subs – McConnahie (on 46’).

The result leaves Morton in 9th place in the SWF Championship South. This Sunday, The Ton travel through to lock horns with another capital side, Edinburgh Caledonia.

Morton Women were back to winning ways on Sunday, besting Edinburgh Caledonian 3-1 at the Lasswade Centre. With the news breaking on Tuesday that long serving manager was standing down, General Manager Dean McKinnon and Assistant Manager Shaun MacDonald took over managerial duties.

Morton started the brighter of the two teams, but struggled to penetrate the back five of the hosts. The Ton struck first in the 21st minute, with a high ball in behind the home side's back line being swept home from twelve yards out by experienced striker Sandra Craig. The Capital side equalised on 41 minutes, heading home from a corner.

Morton upped the ante in the second period in search of a much needed three points. Skipper Rachael McConnachie resorted her side's lead on the hour mark, driving forward and finishing from the edge of the area. Laura Darroch secured the win four minutes later, with her free kick evading the Caley goalkeeper.

Speaking after the match, interim manager Dean McKinnon praised the character of the squad - 'It was a tough week for everyone at the club as Gary Forbes stepped aside. We'd like to thank Gary for all his hard work in bringing the club to the level we are at now.
We asked the squad to show character and resilience this week and we got exactly that. The squad trained well and carried that into today with an excellent performance. We will now focus on taking those positives into next week.'

Morton (4-2-3-1) - Felgate, Hope, Seagreave, Dolan, Hickey (off 46'), Campbell, McConnachie (C), Rankin (off 53'), McKee (off 84'), Darroch, Craig.

Subs - Bryceland (on 46'), Hughes (on 84'), Trialist (on 53').
