I think the current squad deserves credit for plugging away from (at least) December while the club was a complete binfire at almost every other level. It could quite easily have turned into a 13/14 s

There can be absolutely no excuses for failing to beat a part-time team that has played twice this midweek in tomorrow's cup game.

That patter’s pish.

Brutal to watch and an undeserved win. That's cup football for you though, so I don't think there's any need for any hysteria over the performance. We're in to the next round and that's that.

If there's anything at all positive to take from today's game it was that finish from Muirhead. I may be getting carried away but I'd like to see him getting a run in the number 9 position. In the short spell he was part of the forward line today he did a lot right, and I don't see any of our other strikers finishing like that (if at all!). There a was a big, awkward, direct Denny Johnstone vibe about his play. Plus no-one wearing the number 9 shirt has any business whatsoever playing in the midfield.

However that credit should come with a handshake on their way out of the door at the end of the season and sincere  best wishes, rather than a new deal based on solidarity alone. We cannot afford to repeat last summer's mistakes in retaining players who aren't up to standard and particularly forwards who do not score goals: we'll be fortunate enough if we do not pay the price for that with relegation this season.

Whoever takes charge needs to ruthlessly clear out the bulk of the squad and start again.

Aye, that’s fair I suppose. It’s probably a wee bit unfair to be too harsh on the players as a whole as it’s been a rotten situation, but at the same time I just can’t be arsed with yet another round of McInally-esque “they’re a good bunch of boys” and a batch of average players getting plaudits and contracts just because they run about a bit.

I wonder a lot about the wisdom of dedicated fitness coaches at our level. I mean obviously fitness and conditioning are part of full-time training, but given that there also needs to be training with the, tactic training etc, you're looking at just a few hours a week for it. Players' diets are also a huge deal, along with sleep, recovery etc. I wonder how much difference a few hours of supervised training a week actually makes when compared with lifestyle and individual conditioning work.

In fairness to McElhone as a "fitness coach", he was here as assistant manager. His previous experience with fitness coaching presumably would've only been a smaller part of his role at the club. Hasn't Millar been doing more of the fitness  side?

While we're on the subject, I've found it interesting that Hopkin doesn't seem to hire 'football people' as his assistant. Wasn't he also the one that first promoted Martindale to the assistant role at Livi?

On McElhone as well, when is his contract up? Noticed on the official website he's still listed as assistant, with Millen as first team coach. Is he going to see out his contract at home or what rather than getting a pay-off?

Such a good hit from Muirhead seeing it back on Sportscene there. Maybe we should give him a run as an actual striker...

It looked a decent strike from Muirhead, although did it get a deflection?  He said when he first signed that he wanted to play as a striker but only played there against Annan in his first game I think, and scored a decent goal that day too.

Not impressed with Sterling. Seems to struggle to keep his feet and is easily brushed aside. Seems a bit of a lightweight.

McPherson's comments on Sportscene suggest that he wasn't too impressed with what he saw - commenting specifically on poor decision-making early in the second half - but credited the reaction for just about getting through (words to that effect).

While East Fife away would have been a valid banana skin tie under normal circumstances, those were not normal circumstances and so mealy mouthed platitudes were not warranted. It's encouraging then to see due credit for responding from being a goal down being distinguished from the overall performance level.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

You could have put anyone from this forum up front against Annan in that game and we'd probably have scored as well. Cadden and Strapp were putting chances on a plate all evening long.

I'm not buying this revisionism off the back of one goal, though there's no compelling case to pick any of our forward options right now.

Yeah there's no compelling case for picking any particular centre forward option, but in the list of least bad options Muirhead is now above Orsi, having already been ahead of Salkeld, and there's a debate to be had about Sterling.

Throwing him in there would be an act of desperation, but we're desperate.

I’m not in any way suggesting Muirhead is the answer to our striking problems. Just that his goal yesterday was a decent finish. As was his goal against Annan. I think every other shot I’ve seen from him has been over the bar. It’s an area of the team where we are incredibly weak this season.

Well he was described as a “sports scientist specialising in fitness and conditioning” and much was made of his previous roles on that front upon his appointment, and much was made of how important it was to splash money on gym facilities. If he’s not able to prepare a team properly for matches and picking his best players is a challenge too far, we should at least be able to expect a side that can handle a few games a week and not get outrun by East Fife.

Pleased he acknowledges at least we didn’t start well at all. Can’t do the same tomorrow.

Remember Duffy played a weakened team when we could have closed the gap on Livingston so that we could ahem give a good account of ourselves at Parkhead. Play your strongest team every fucking game. If it means counts miss a big game through suspension or anything then fuck them. Get us back to part time football and guys that want to play for us for the love of it and not for a fucking decent pay packet  bunch of pampered poods the lot of them

It's a truncated season in any case, and we have a young squad. Only if players are nursing injuries or on the verge of breaking a hip - Celtic refusing to rest Kieran Tierney comes to mind - should we be rotating in such circumstances.

Don't think you can accuse the Morton squad of being in it for the money. This is the absolute nadir of the full-time game. If they wanted a wedge of cash for nothing they could make a wee wedge at Kelty or some mob like that and get a proper job on the side.
