Fan Poll - MCT Consultation Survey

Cappielow/Car Park Ownership

63 members have voted

  1. 1. Following on from MCT's fan consultation, which option would you prefer out of the two that MCT presented, and a 'no deal' scenario?

    • Option 1 - GC write off the debt and retain ownership of Cappielow and the carpark, leasing both back to MCT.
      10
    • Option 2 - The debt remains, GC take ownership of the carpark and hand over ownership of Cappielow to MCT.
      2
    • Option 3 - I don't find either of these deals satisfactory.

The regular income of the club is of no value to any bank, given that we haven't been able to break-even never mind register a small profit for the best part of 25 years. If you're spending more than you're earning then they're not going to help you with the short-term cashflow needs that a professional football club has to operate efficiently.

It's a ticket to being a glorified social club then, counting the coppers in the biscuit tin every week to see what can be done.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Compare day one of Golden Casket owning Morton to day one of MCT owning Morton under Golden Casket's proposed takeover options. They want GMFC to go into 21/22 either saddled with an insane amount of

I'd personally like to see a poll with just the two options on the table.  Appreciate everything is a negotiation, but we are obviously nearing the planned takeover date and possibly further away

I accept getting the club asset rich and debt free, for no money is the preferred option.  But given how long MCT have been in negotiations, we probably have to accept it's a bit of a unicorn.

Who is saying that a future incarnation of GMFC Ltd isn't living within its means?  There are several Football clubs out there who live within their means without being reliant on a wealthy benefactor, what's to say we can't do that too?  One thing that I haven't factored in is the regular MCT donations - rather than spunking that away on propping up failed current ownership, it would be better spent on creating funding reserves for any short term needs as you mentioned above.

Also, being as you describe 'a glorified social club' would be preferable than either the status quo or becoming another 'Dundee' who simply seem to be a perennial pass-the-parcel amongst local charlatans masquerading as 'business men' en route to the next financial catastrophe.

ETA.  Banks love businesses owing them money as long as they don't default on their debts. It's how they make their huge profits. :)

The thing that says that we can't is our history of loss-making and prior administration event. We can make excuses for Hugh Scott and for Shoogly's daft spending all we want, but all a hard-headed outsider sees is a club that seems to lose money like a sieve. Remove the last remaining assets from the books as well and there's no reason for any creditor to work with GMFC. Whether that's a short-term supplier or a bank that could provide support to cover short term cashflow.

Banks meanwhile do not love lending to Scottish football clubs because they have had their fingers well and truly burned by all the admin + penny in the pound actions of Scottish football clubs: Dunfermline, Livingston, Dundee to name but a few, some several times over. We're not far away from going 2/2 ourselves.

Those aren't the only options on the table though. I see no reason why a fan-owned - not necessarily fan-run - model is more likely to suddenly collapse and lose the ground than the Angelo Masssones and Crawford Raes of the world who end up running Scottish football clubs. If Cappielow was worth having on the books of GMFC before then it is worth having it on there if MCT take ownership as well.

If we're in a position where we have other assets or reserve funds that makes our balance sheet sustainable regardless then that's the time to think about preserving the stadium land indefinitely. We wouldn't get to that point for some time though, during which we would most likely be hamstrung by our fly-by-night business model and sink down the leagues like Stirling Albion did after their fan takeover.

You are making the big assumption that we are going to continue being run like an shambles like we have been over the past 25 years.  There is a reasonable possibility that a well run Morton FC can be viable and creditworthy in the future, regardless of whether or not we have the title deeds of our stadium.

Also, there are several clubs in Scotland who don't own their own stadium, Falkirk and Clyde are the two obvious ones which spring to mind.  Rather than paying a market rent to a local council, we could pay a peppercorn rent to a charitable trust, set up with Morton as a joint trustee and beneficiary for the lifetime of the clubs existence.

Dare I say it, I reckon the compromise and resolution may resemble something like what i have described.  What I have mentioned is nowhere near the finished idea or plan, and would need the work of legal expertise to develop it further.  But it is a solution which could benefit all parties concerned.

Falkirk and Clyde: those two benchmarks of progress in Scottish football.

And I'm not the one making that assumption. That's the job of the bank manager/every single supplier: to determine whether they're dealing with a legitimate business that can guarantee their money owed, or if they'll end up alongside the face painters, corner shops and Scottish Ambulance Service, who all got diddled by the self-styled 'establishment club' of Scottish football.

I'm not all that fond of either of these clubs either, but guess what, they both have banking facilities and companies and individuals still do business with them.

What you are arguing is that if we were similar circumstances to them, perhaps even better off, that nobody would give us banking facilities or credit facilities!?!  It's preposterous.

Re-read what you've posted.  Go on.

You can guarantee payments if at least one director on the board are willing to underwrite the club that way. The MCT scheme will be in no position to do that immediately. A bank is not going to take non-binding pledges that can be cancelled any time as credible security. If the terms of credit are limited or more difficult to comply with than before then that makes the task of running the club more difficult, even if those lines of support are not removed completely. That's the cost of doing business with a ramshackle company that you do not fully trust to pay its dues: and it is GMFC who pay that cost.

I fail to see why we should aspire to taking on that burden because having the ground hived off makes us feel better. It would certainly be a better outcome than either of Golden Casket's options that would fatally undermine any new regime from the beginning, but it's still only exacerbating the weak financial position that GMFC is in already. Fan ownership can be trusted with taking care of the stadium asset at least as much as any of the chancers who have darkened the door of Cappielow or indeed any other Scottish football club.

If a cash reserve or our supercasino with retractable pitch on the Cappielow roof is up and running then, sure, let's put our eggs in different baskets. Right now we've only got one egg to our name though, so it's a case of running before we're anywhere near done walking away from this mess to do so.

The singular, sole aspect where they could even attempt to argue they were leaving the club in a better position than they found it was in being a second tier club rather than a third tier club. An utterly pathetic return for 20 years and a whole lot of money on a bonfire, but that's all they had to cling to. However through their gross negligence, they're ensuring it'll be a third tier club as well as all the rest of the damage they've done.

Here's a takeover proposal for Golden Casket: fuck off with nothing and never darken our door again. Not a penny of debt owed to you, not an asset stolen away into your thieving hands. Just leave and end your 20 years of incompetence, negligence and outright malice against this football club.

We also had a rejuvenated fan base back then. We've a support that's had enough now.

Apathy is certainly high - and the pandemic is doing the Raes bidding on that as well - but if the support has had enough then we're going to need to show that by hounding them out of the club. Rage can prove just as powerful a mobiliser as excitement.

I don't expect us to return to the 'glory' days of Dougie riding in on his white steed promising the world and making big signings by lower league standards anytime soon, but if the fanbase cannot become engaged with the task of actually owning the club and making the decisions themselves then what's the point?

Over the long run I think that should make people more reliably engaged with the club, rather than dropping interest whenever the latest owner has made an arse of it and there's nothing on the park or in the boardroom to convince them that things are going to get better.

We've had Scott and now we have the Raes. Either we as a fanbase take responsibility for own fate at the third time of asking or we quite frankly deserve to become some stupid rump outfit like East Stirling or Clydebank.

I don't like sticking it to MCT as they have a huge task on their hands but I really think they need to rethink their strategy from now until the proposed buy out and takeover. Rae deserves to walk away with fuck all. The Rae legacy will be that they have made an absolute cunt of it tome and time again from top to bottom and did not learn from their mistakes. Time for them to do the right thing and do what's best for the club.

Having an alternative name would make a campaign more effective, by taking that creative exercise off the council's agenda - 'Jimmy Cowan Place'? 'Efe Ambrose Boulevard'?
