Pre-Season

Bit of a weird one. It's a friendly scheduled the midweek before our league season starts - it was always going to be a match we treated cautiously. Why arrange this in the first place if it would be cancelled because it would be treated as a friendly?

We had youth players in the line up when Warnock brought up Sheffield Utd for a pre season match, it's to be expected.

The inevitable conclusion to what has been a shambolic pre-season schedule, in which we started one week after most teams in the country and arranged one proper game (because 'bounce matches' make normal friendlies look like the World Cup Final in terms of credibility). Predictably enough, some of our players are short of fitness, some of them have picked up injuries as well and we've been papped out of an important money-spinning cup competition after just two games. There's obviously been a lot happening behind the scenes at Cappielow this summer but that simply underlines the need for Iron Man to actually organise these things as the chief executive. The club should have had a credible pre-season schedule organised before and regardless of Duffy getting sacked at the end of last season; it's not as if we're playing at a level where the manager must whisk the team off to a top secret training camp to reveal their unique footballing philosophy.

This is correct, and despite all the encouraging signs at Cappielow this summer, this is a pub league-tier disappointment.

We really don't help ourselves at times do we? You can't account for injuries but you can't tell me that we can't field a competitive team in terms of first team players. Now the early bird season tickets are over, and we're out of the cup the last opportunity to try and engage with any stay away or new fans before the season begins was by welcoming an English Premier League side to Cappielow.

Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but only with religion do good people do bad things!

While I take VT's point about organisation of pre-season in general and not having enough friendlies before the season started, I can't say the fact of it being Cardiff makes me feel any differently than I would if it was against a local amateur side. It's a friendly, it matters for preparing players in terms of fitness but fans being excited about playing an English Premier League side is extremely tinpot. If it was a legitimately top side then maybe, but I can't bring myself to think of a friendly against Cardiff fucking City as a 'glamour' tie and I was never bothered about attending.

We probably could have but with a few injuries it's not worth the risk of not being able to do it on the Saturday.

It was Cardiff fucking City, we’d have been lucky to get 1,200 there.

Having 'a few injuries' is the default status of any professional football squad at any time of year - if the club was concerned about that then they shouldn't have arranged this fixture in the first place. As opposed to cancelling it less than a week in advance like a clown-car outfit.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

OK then, wiseguy, let's jeopardise the players for the sake of a game vs a bunch of sheep shaggers.

The league is far more important.

Cardiff were the first Premiership team in years that had decided to come up and face Morton... and Morton can't muster a team worth playing against. Do you think any other Premiership team will consider playing us in future?

Of course it's a 'meaningless friendly' but, in terms of club reputation and the inconvenience/disappointment for supporters of both clubs, it's really poor.

You're a helmet Colin Darroch but on this occasion I agree with you.

Have a squad that consists of more than 14 (?) outfield players that could realistically be considered for the first team?

Strapp doesn't count, or any of the other boys that are making up the numbers on the bench...

Amuses me... you're sooo bold. Good you're agreeing with me for once though... as I'm right way more than I'm wrong!

I couldn't care less, because whether a friendly is played against an English Premier League team or literal pub team makes not one iota of difference. The crucial word being 'friendly', a word which denotes complete irrelevance.

Agreed. The club could have went ahead with it to try make a few extra pounds but have gave that up probably at the managers request.

1,200 paying customers - that is, people not using a season ticket - is more than we'll get for the vast majority of games this season.

We need a first team that that should be realisitically be 20 first team players then the young players backing that up.
