Defender To Sign

I think Allan Moore (on Sunday) is the first Morton manager I have seen wearing a suit and tie at a game. I certainly don't remember Grady, Irons or McInally doing so!

Yep - although he seems to have adopted JM's "arms-folded-and-lean-against-the-wall" thing.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

Maybe, but he does shout and point a heck of a lot, which JM NEVER did

Yeah, I noticed this too.

Think you have mis-interpreted my post as defending JM or something. Our managers have all been different in this respect. Billy Stark, for example, stood quietly whilst letting Frank Connor turn purple yelling at the players.

Possibly, but I'd like to see him getting a chance. There's no doubt he was awful guilty for going long all the time, but in a properly structured team that's offering 3 or 4 good options to the defender on the ball perhaps he would fare much better, especially with a better level of coaching geared towards a passing game.

Hopefully Greacen can get fit soon, as we really do need the extra option at centre-back.

To be honest, he has never been a player suited to passing the ball out of the defence since hes been at cappielow, a few reasons for this:-

1. He struggles to stay on his feet when attempting to win a ball on the ground

2. Lack of football ability (I dont think he has the ability to take a good first touch and pass the ball accurately)

3. Lack of football intelligence on the pitch (Looking for the right pass, when to play it etc)

1. Tackling's not really anything to do with passing the ball? On his games he's solid and hard to beat in the air and on the ground so if he does stuggle to stay on his feet but wins the ball its not that much of a problem.

2. I don't think any professional player is that bad - especially one who has perfomed well in the first division in the past.

3. As EanieMeanie said the hasn't been many options for him to pass to in his career here and the right pass/ when to play it isn't just a skill - it varies depending on manager and style so this will be done at training.

I really don't think Greacen is as bad as some on here make out and think he will could work well as the big strong baller winner next to a guy whos a bit better on the ball. Time will tell if he's good enough but I would like to see him given a chance as he deserves it on his attitude alone over his time at the club.

cheers for that - saves me the bother of typing up something broadly similar! ^_^

I would rather have Greacen at centre-half than Evans. Greacen, while not the best defender in the league, has given strikers in this division a hard time for several years now and although not quite as able as Smyth with the ball at his feet, he is a more than capable defender at this level and certainly better than Evans at centre-half.

Yep I agree with all of that, and with Tonosaurus (above).

I get the feeling that Moore, at least from a distance, like(d) Graecen too, having compared Andy Graham with him when he was trying to sign him. Of course, that could've changed, but I think there's a place for Graecen in our starting XI.

You're joking surely! Although Evans had a poor first twenty minutes or so on Tuesday, he is clearly better than Greacen who would have been 'rag-dolled' by Higdon on Tuesday and doubtless cost us a goal. Anyway, Greacen's time is up at Cappielow as Moore doesn't rate him. Only his high wages are stopping him being loaned out to a Second/Third Division side. :)

Thats exactly what Higdon did to Evans on Tuesday night

Certainly not joking. Higdon made Evans look like a wee boy, as did the Dumbarton front-line on Sunday. I don't want to slag Evans off because I thought he did well at full-back against Bristol Rovers, but I do not think that he is the answer at centre-half. He stepped in time and again against St Mirren and Dumbarton leaving huge gaps behind him and was naive in his play as a centre-half in both games, getting turned too easily by both St Mirren and Dumbarton forwards.

Greacen for all his lack of technical ability is a solid centre half at this level and has saved us on a number of occasions. He is strong as an ox and has a reasonable amount of pace to deal with even the fastest strikers in this division. If called upon, he will do a better job than Evans in my opinion.

I'd rather look at what's down in black and white since Evans came into the team. A succession of clean sheets. :)

Despite that I'd still like to see McCaffrey at CB and Evans at RB.

That would give us good depth at the back for this level compared to most other squads.

I must have missed where this apparent hatred of Greacen came from. He's the only player in our squad left who would run through a brick wall for the team, and he's more than good enough for this division. We conceded so many goals last year because of our fullbacks and midfield, not because of our central defenders.

Greacen needs coached on everything he does during a game, as he doesn't really have a football brain but with the right person beside him i wouldn't swap him for any other defender in the league.

Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things, but only with religion do good people do bad things!

could be because the idiots don't have finlayson to abuse anymore so greacen is their new target?

Same here mate. all of this has come right out of the blue. With an experienced head beside him, greacen would slot into the team well. As Port-ton said he would run through a brick wall for the cause, something which i doubt alot of the squad would do.

Yep, this, particularly the second part. Gerard Pique he is not, but as long as he gets the right coachingand has a good partner beside him, he's more than fine. So far, Smyth looks to be the perfect complement for Greacen in that he's composed, good on the ball and is always talking. I totally agree about last seasons problems too, the whole team was an absolute shambles which have left even the best of defenders floundering.

I agree with Tonosaurus too about Evans, there's no way he's any long term answer at centre-half. Looks a good full back, but he doesn't look at all comfortable in the middle.

I'm still surprised at the choice of MacGregor at RB and Evans at CB - would have thought that if they were both in the team they would play the other way around.
