Davie McArthur
Well, what did you expect from a student of far-right US economic policy? I liked the bit where he said he wanted the SNP to become 'a more business friendly party'. But then, all mainstream political parties are exactly the same. Mark Steel had a piece in The Independent recently about the funding of parties and in particular unions funding Labour. He said that unions are still giving millions to Labour and getting nothing in the way of policy so what they should do is give 'em 50 grand and demand a knighthood. No doubt there will be some here who won't even bat an eyelid about this and tell us 'independence is the most important thing and then economic policy' but you wouldn't build your house on sand. Honor Todd
Good for Mr Salmon. He was fortunate if he was not directly impacted in the 80's by the competitive decisions that were taken. Thinking about it, this period of time probably provided Mr Salmon with the momentum to accelerate the divide with the rest of the UK. mortonjag
What puzzles me is this. The Poll Tax was introduced in 1989. Everybody who knew anything about local government finance predicted a disaster. What was Bawheid doing at the time-what was he thinking and saying? In 1987 he was elected Member of Parliament for Banff and Buchan and later that year became Senior Vice Convener (Deputy Leader) of the SNP. He was at this time still viewed as being firmly on the left of the party and had become a key ally of Jim Sillars, who joined him in the British House of Commons when he won a by-election for the seat of Glasgow Govan in 1988. Hmm! Then of course there was the massive run down of the traditional heavy industries-Ravenscraig, for example, was just about to bite the dust! What was he thinking and saying then? Hmm! First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they pretend to befriend you, then you win! YER BARD

But what a politician says in opposition is usually the polar opposite of what they say in power. I vaguely remember Sillars and Salmond being at the forefront of the anti-poll tax movement but Salmond is a bit of a Blair, he'll change his message depending on the audience in front of him. Hmm! i think you will find this is more creative journalism from liebour loving douglas fraser. It was right up there with his story about mconnel attacking salmond over homecoming 2009. P'raps wee jack is trying to deflect the blast of when he starts his new african junket at the tax peyers exoense when he hasnt had a surgery for nearly a year i think what salmond said was taken completely out of context. he said the main opposition was against her social policy, and we didnt mind AS MUCH her ecnomic policy. how the herald had him "excusing" thatcher is so stupid that (i hope) the majority of the scottish electorate will see it for the pathetic ploy it is. Ian gray has demanded an apology and yet i wonder when gray will demand an apology from gordon brown We are not home and dry, we could not even be said to be home and vigorously towelling ourselves off! vikingTON
"The SNP has a strong social conscience, which is very Scottish in itself. One of the reasons Scotland didn't take to Lady Thatcher was because of that. We didn't mind the economic side so much. We didn't like the social side at all." I don't see much wrong with that myself - then again, I'm not a Labour leadership candidate scraping the barrel to avoid electoral oblivion. Nor am I Mortonjag. The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before.. So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. Tom_McB
"I have tried to bring the SNP into the mainstream of Scotland," said Mr Salmond. "We have a very competitive economic agenda. Many business people have warmed towards the SNP. We need a competitive edge, a competitive advantage - get on with it, get things done, speed up decision making, reduce bureaucracy."The guy's more right wing economically than me, and I'm a Friedmanite. Wonder how this will play in Glenrothes? I don't mind Bawheid being an economic Tory, I applaud it, though taking a bung from soapy soutar to forget about the SNP policy on bus regulation showed a different side to Bawheid. As for We didn't mind the economic side so much. We didn't like the social side at all." I can see the Scottish labour Party politicals for the next election dining out on that. "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences."The goal of Socialism is Communism- Lenin Je ne suis pas Marxiste : K Marx

vikingTON
He is dyslexic. So he put the quotation marks around the sentence yet not the relevant question mark? That's not dyslexia - that's just a basic structure error. No award for you nor your monkey I'm afraid.
