DreamOakTree
Borrowed from Radio Clyde with slight twist: If you could return to a Morton Match or Event you attended what would it be? List your top five then summarise your first choice. I’ll start with: 1/ Morton 3 Airdrie 1 1978 2/ Morton 1 Celtic 0 1978 3/ Morton 4 Hibs 3 1969 3/ Morton 2 West Brom 2 1973 4/ Morton 4 Dundee Utd 1 1978 Morton 3 Airdrie 1 1978: This was the decisive match to win the league title and promotion to the Premier League. Alcohol was still allowed into grounds so a squad of us had bottles of (cheap) pomagne to uncork if we could win the match. It was an incredibly tense occasion so there wasn’t any great football on display. Airdrie went 1 up in the first half then we bombarded them but didn’t look like scoring. We’d been accused of not wanting promotion and people started to wonder if we were getting cold feet. Captain Davie Hayes was having none of it and scored maybe only his second goal for Morton (below) to equalise. The tension continued to the 85th minute when John Goldthorpe put us 2-1 ahead. Who else but Andy Ritchie put the 7000 fans into raptures when he scored the decisive 3rd goal to clinch the title. We then uncorked the bottles and the party started! https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/132363676535323799/?amp_client_id=CLIENT_ID(_)&mweb_unauth_id=501fd848033b4cd2b63990d7105ee642&simplified=true

BishopBrennan
Aside from the obvious ones, a result we don't talk about much, given what followed, Airdrie 1-6 Morton was a fucking great day. My top three are Celtic 0-1 Morton, Hibs 3-4 Morton and Morton 1-0 Peterhead. Relegating Falkirk would be there, but I wasn't at that one. You address me by my proper title, you little bollocks! dunning1874
With hindsight I really didn’t enjoy the Celtic game enough at the time. Obviously full-time was incredible, but even right after the goal I was too busy shitting myself about an equaliser to properly enjoy the moment. Toby
Like Dean, trying to stay away from the obvious ones; Morton 4-1 Hamilton, 9/3/96 What a fantastic performance. We'd just come off the back of a disappointing week in which we'd lost away to Dundee United and Dunfermline, and lost Mahood and Lindberg for the rest of the season. I can't remember too much of the game, but I'm pretty sure we'd gone a goal behind before a brilliant second half comeback put us back on track. I was absolutely buzzing with Morton as I left the ground that day. Morton 3-2 Partick, 29/11/97 Other than the Hibs game in 2009, the most entertaining football match I've ever attended. End to end stuff with both teams exchanging the lead before we won it late on when Stuart Gray ran the length of the park to get onto a breakaway, score the winner and send the Cowshed wild. It helped having such a horrible lot on the other side of the fence, too. Ayr United 1-1 Morton, 18/11/00 Only a few weeks before the club went into administration, and enduring a hellish season to date. Everything that could go wrong did, and we went away to Ayr, who were going well and one of Livingston's main challengers for the title. 1-0 down and heading for another frustrating defeat, Darren Davies swung a cross in deep into injury time and Harry Curran turned it into the top corner at the Railway End and the Morton support went absolutely mental. Brilliant scenes, and one of the few great moments that we managed to get something in the face of adversity back then. Ross County 1-2 Morton, 25/1/03 A Scottish Cup tie in which we went away to a First Division team and comfortably beat them whilst in the Third Division. Pretty much the perfect away day. A good group of us up on the train with a carry out first thing in the morning, into the Mallard for a few pints, 600 Morton fans making the long journey, Super Alex at the peak of his powers and a cup upset in the pissing rain. Gerry's late dad got a tidy return on 2-1 Williams FGS and gave me a couple of quid to look after the rest of the lads' drinks for the rest of the day (he was too pissed by that point to take it himself), too. The first point that I felt Morton were really on the road to recovery. Morton 2-1 Ayr United, 1/5/10 Last game of the season, and a three way battle also involving Airdrie to stay in the division. A win would've kept us up, a draw seen us in the play offs and a defeat send us down (in all likelihood, depending on results elsewhere]. 1-0 down after a dreadful first half, we scored two late goals through Stewart Greacen and Carlo Monti to send Ayr back where they belong. Fantastic celebrations when Monti scored, great to see the neds fighting each other on the pitch, brilliant to see Ayr fans crying in the Norseman and best of all, seeing Dean Matthew greeting like a wean on the pitch. GLORIOUS.
so72
Another one that is maybe a wee bit forgotten about in more recent times - Morton 2-1 Dundee Utd League Cup Quarter Final, was a great night as it sent us to Hampden for the first time in my life. With hindsight, another one over that rat too.
TONofmemories
As far as perfect away days go (and there's not many) the game vs Peterhead away on our way to our last league title. Up early, all the lads in attendance, plenty beers and songs, pitch invasion, back home and out for a sing song in Greenock. Perhaps not the greatest memory in my mind but it was the perfect away day. Ross County (already mentioned by Toby) really stands out. Some class scenes TIME FOR CHANGE! The Bewilderedbeast
Forgot the 9-1 v Forfar, although otherwise a nothing game it was great to see us score so many goals, prior to that a 7-2 win against Cowdenbeath in the league cup sections in the early to mid 70’s was the most goals I’d seen us score. Perhaps not the greatest memory in my mind but it was the perfect away day. Ross County (already mentioned by Toby) really stands out. Some class scenes I thought about including that game, but Thomas O'Ware ending up the hero of the day sours the memory, given that he's a cunt. Beith. Didn’t hurl nearly enough abuse at those bumpkins. I'd say the "abuse" that day was almost completely one sided, from them to us. I was nightshift after that game so it was somewhat ruined for me as I couldn't go out to the pubs, but you could tell that it was the biggest day in their history- every wee fanny in the town came out for the big boys coming to town, and they were going to show us who was boss. 6-0. Watching them hurling abuse at us from that enclosure as we walked out the ground after a routine win was amazing- rather than being intimidated, we were photographing them, such was the nick of them. If they wanted to get to us, they had plenty of opportunity, too. Ali Sami Yen it was not. That said, "You're shite, and your big team died" is the greatest song the Morton support have ever come up with, far superior to "Two Andy Gorams". dunning1874
Beith. Didn’t hurl nearly enough abuse at those bumpkins. I’d swapped my shifts when the draw was made so I could go to that. Of course the game was then called off and rescheduled for the Saturday I’d swapped to. Still seething. AyrshireTon
With one exception, I've avoided the obvious games. 9/4/88 - Morton 3-2 Rangers We were already relegated and they had only just been ruled out of the title race. Our previous three meetings that season sat at 0-15 on aggregate and we hadn't beaten them at home in 70 years. A BB group in full kit walked into the Cowshed and stood right in front of the Morton fans at the fence - only to be immediately escorted by the police into the away end (lots of space). Derek Collins (that had to be a fluke), Rowan Alexander and Tommy Turner got our goals in a brilliant 3-2 win. Much seething from the visiting orcs, mostly about the money they'd spent to watch it. Tragic that there were no TV cameras due to it being semi-finals day. 25/8/79 - St. Mirren 0-3 Morton Third game of the season in the year that we topped the league. For a St. Mirren team which would go on and qualify for Europe that season, Ritchie and Thomson absolutely destroyed them and left them bottom of the heap at full time. 28/10/92 - Kilmarnock 1-2 Morton The B&Q Cup quarter final. They had already put us out of the League Cup at Cappielow. Tight first half then Alex Mathie was sent clear through and buried it. We were still celebrating when Killie equalised. Mathie was sent through in a near-identical move late on but this time he hit the post - Derek Lilley followed up and hit the rebound home (underhit a little and it seemed to take an age to go in). Absolute bedlam behind the goal in an already cracking atmosphere. 21/9/95 - Morton 4-0 St. Johnstone John Anderson opened the scoring with a header in the first half. Hawke scored two early in the second (the second a great looping header). We spent ages trying to get the soon-to-be-departing McInnes a goal before Hawke got his hat-trick late on. St. Johnstone were like rabbits caught in headlights. That team could do this sort of thing to anyone on their day. 3/11/01 - Stranraer 1-4 Morton The season after we came out of administration. We were pretty gash for most of it but this stands out for me. It was 1-1 with minutes left and the game was going nowhere with most of us standing next to the exit. Next thing you know Sean O'Connor had inspired us to three late, late goals - the last goal prompting a handful of fans onto the pitch to celebrate with him. The referee made light of it and calmly asked the fans to get off. He must have known how infrequently we scored that season. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.
