Morton VS Dundee United - Saturday 8 December

We weren't that bad today and probably should have edged it against one of the league favourites who were on the back of a heavy defeat. I think we're one or two signings away from being a decent side.

Aye if the two signings are Marcelo and Hazard.

Zhivago furious that Millar was the best player on the pitch after giving him stick all year. He's also the fittest as well. A tremendous signing, he's kept himself in great nick.

Peter Weatherson is the greatest player since Ritchie, and should be assigned 'chairman for life'

The second half was a significant improvement, although you do have to acknowledge that Dundee United's decision to sit on their lead was crucial in allowing us into the game. Had they approached the second half as they had the first I'd have expected them to finish us off but they didn't and while we were still extremely frustrating to watch and ultimately had to rely on a goalkeeping howler from a set piece, it's a decent point in the end.

I thought McHugh made a big difference when he came on. He's starting to contribute outside the box rather than just being a penalty box striker and his composure with his back to goal gave us a lot more structure with him bringing the midfield into it, whereas Thomson had been isolated for most of the game prior to that.

Millar was excellent yesterday. He's been one of our few consistent players this season. Big Thomson also did really well (by his standards), especially in the second half. We looked more lively once McHugh came on - I'd like to see the two of them as a pairing over the next few games given our current lack of options.

Scott Tiffoney and Charlie Telfer are both an absolute waste of a jersey and only contribute in flashes when it suits them. Whenever we're under any kind of pressure they run away from the ball. Telfer just lacks the athleticism to be a professional footballer imo.

That first half yesterday was really, really grim. Credit to the team for retreiving something fron the game though, helped out by United dropping deep and just not being very good. Millar was easily our best player, Buchanan a close second, I thought the full defence looked tighter and more assured too. 3 points next week, please.

Millar was immense. This is another top notch wind up.

Not a wind up. Think some have the blinkers on with Millar...

He had a decent second half, but was poor in the first half. Can think of three dreadful passes in the first half, and one poor attempt at stopping an attack. I'm sure he wasn't happy with his own performance...

Hmm... guessing the 'immense' description is actually a 'top notch wind up'!

Wow, to be defensive based on the skills of the players you’ve quoted is a stretch. We are generally pedestrian.

If you want to play a faster tempo game, you need players in the centre of the park with the technical ability to control the ball and play accurate passes forward or into space with just two or three touches. Removing Tidser, Millar or any of our current central midfielders from the team to play some freakshow who can run fast but can't trap a bag of cement or pass the ball ten yards -which is the inevitable trade-off you will get at this level - is in fact the exact opposite of what you need to do to solve a pedestrian style of play.

It takes having no grasp of the game whatsoever - and a failure to understand basic biology and physics as well - to believe that having athletic players would move the ball faster from back to front on a football pitch than competent passing does. Needless to say that Zhivago didn't disappoint on that front.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Absolutely spot on.

'Making the ball do the work' isn't a popular phrase with people who understand football for no good reason.

Millar is a stand out in our team - although his no-look backpass that nearly went in at the post (I think that was him and not Tidser) wasn't his finest moment. We are pedestrian, but it's not Millar and Tidser that are the cause f our pedestriansim (if that's a word).  We have actually been pretty pedestrian for a few seasons now in may areas of the park.  However a team of technically good players should usually manage to beat a team of very fast touch-of-an-elephant players.  I think that's the case at most levels of the game - I watched a team of U13s run rings round the U15 team I help to coach a couple of weeks ago simply because the younger players have been better coached from an early age and have developed the skills needed to control and pass, whereas the older team contains a fair number of players who are strong and fast but generally can't control the ball well or weight a pass.  Getting involved in coaching has actually been a revelation for me.  Really enjoy it but didn't take long to see the deficiencies we see at our mediocre professional level are mirrored at lower levels.

Saturday was an OK result given our injury list, though a terrible game to watch in the first half.  Thomson did well and could be a viable option to partner Bob until Denny is fit (so basically until May), but Tiffoney is a waste of a jersey 95% of the time - he really should deliver more as he has some ability at dribbling, has decent place and can shoot.  Agree Kilday seems to have lost it.  Sooner Waddell is back the better.

I'm sure that was Tidser..

I thought Millar struggled to get a hold of the match in the first half but was very good in the second (even if his passing was a little off at times). Tidser also played well. I'm going to be unpopular here but, one poor pass aside, McAlister was the best of the lot.

Buchanan had a tremendous second half. Wish we had that Buchanan all the time.

McHugh changed things for the better when he came on and very much improved things at that end of the pitch (Thomson also improved as the match went on).

We didn't get much out of Tiffoney and Telfer, but the latter at least would have scored if his goal hadn't been denied by Tumilty.

Aye you're right, my mistake.  I knew it was one of them as none of our other players would attempt anything so avantgarde.

Having watched the highlights, I definitely criticised Gaston a bit too much at the time for their goal. From my view, I thought he was trying to see it out and it dropped it, but he does genuinely try to make it. He might just have got there had they not had a player on the post.

Also, I'm not completely sure that Telfer's shot was going in after all, it might just have been spinning wide. Quite hard to tell from the video.
