2015 - Stranraer 0-2 Morton (McManus 2, 1 pen)

Crunch time - broadcast live on BBC Alba (who missed the 2nd goal).

1987 - Montrose 1-4 Morton (Alexander 2, Richardson, og)

Promotion to the Premier League secured - for the third time.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

2008 - Partick Thistle 0-3 Morton (Wake 2, Finlayson)

We needed to equal or better Clyde's result to avoid the play-off spot. Thankfully, Thistle were concerned only with unveiling their new strip, and Brian Wake inspired us to an easy win. Nervous wait at full time until we heard that Clyde had won 3-0 too. Great support too.

1978 - Morton 3-1 Airdrieonians (Hayes, Goldthorp, Ritchie pen)

A dramatic and emotional night at Cappielow. Having been 1-0 down at the break we got level through captain Davie Hayes. In the last few minutes it was scenes everywhere when John Goldthorp put us ahead. A Ritchie penalty made it all safe. We were promoted to the new 10-team top flight for the first time ever.

1996 - Dumbarton 0-1 Morton (Anderson)

Elsewhere, Dundee United hosted Dunfermline. We were highly unlikely to finish top now, so the best hope was for United to win and we would go above the Pars. With the title clinched already, United would hopefully down tools on the final day to let us stay 2nd in the play-off spot.

Dunfermline won 1-0, meaning we would have to beat Dundee United on the final day.

April 28th -

2018 - Morton 0-3 I.C.T.

Duffy's last game in charge.

2012 - Livingston 0-0 Morton

An irrelevant result in terms of the league, but this was the first season sharing a league with Livi where we'd managed to not lose at Almondvale.

2001 - Morton 2-1 F*lk*rk (Redmond, Matheson)

Final home game of the season - it would be six years before Cappielow would see 2nd tier football again.

1979 - Motherwell 3-3 Morton (Thomson 2, Ritchie)

Penultimate game of our first season in the Premier League, against an already relegated Motherwell.

April 29th -

2000 - Clydebank 0-3 Morton (Anderson, Curran, Matheson)

Played at Cappielow. Note the protesters on what is now the car park.

http://youtu.be/hyqGmgtLfTo

1995 - Berwick Rangers 3-4 Morton (Lilley 2, 1 pen, Collins, Rajamaki)

An outrageous first half saw us 2-0 down without having really touched the ball. Lilley pulled one back then the Berwick keeper was sent off for conceding a penalty. Berwick's Warren Hawke completed his hat-trick on half time. Collins got us level then late on the sub keeper let a rather tame Rajamaki shot slip under his body.

Neil Orr's Queen of the South, fresh from holding us last week, managed to hold Dumbarton to a 2-2 draw. This meant a win over Dumbarton would see us promoted and all but league winners.

1978 - Morton 2-3 Dundee (Russell 2)

Barring a 10 goal swing by Hearts at Alloa, we were already Champions. Dundee needed to win and hope that Hearts didn't. In the end we took the title on goal difference, although in truth it was virtually won 3 day previously.

D5WELF8WwAcdcWy.jpg

1922 - Morton 1-1 Celtic (Brown)

The day of the famous Cappielow Riots, as Celtic got the late point they needed to win the league, although they were not immediately aware that they had won it.

April 30th -

2011 - Morton 0-2 Dunfermline

Dunfermline clinched the league that day. Norseman was full of away fans.

2005 - Stranraer 1-1 Morton (Weatherson)

Nothing less than a win would do, but Allan Jenkins gave them an early lead. We got back into it but could not get a winner. Last game of the season would be a dead rubber against Berwick.

1994 - Morton 1-2 St. Mirren (Lilley)

Another crap result in a dreadful season.

1988 - Morton 0-4 Dundee United

Whilst he had had a decent season in spite of the defenders in front of him, Wylie had a horror show in this one. Worst was an "arms outstretched, it's okay it's going wide" gesture for a shot that ended well inside the post. Paatelainen scored all four.

D5a2KvYW4AITpQt.jpg

This was not the first time this had happened....

1983 - Morton 0-4 Dundee United

United fans took over Scapa, as their board paid for their admission. They would go on to win the title. Since then, only one other title has been won by a team other than the two cheeks.

1977 - Raith Rovers 3-4 Morton (Anderson, Ritchie, Hutchison, McGhee)

We relegated Raith Rovers, who joined F*lk*rk in being relegated to the "obscurity" of the third tier (of three). That just sounds lovely.

Mention also of future Morton player Bobby Thomson playing for St. Johnstone.

1974 - Morton 1-1 Celtic (McGhee)

May 4th -

2019 - F*lk*rk were relegated to the 3rd tier of Scottish Football. And there was much rejoicing.  :thumbup2:   :drink:  :bouncy:  :D

Pretty much eclipses everything else. I've waited years for this moment.

  • 2 months later...

Last words before I let the thread go. Not adding anything else on here but will still add the odd thing on Twitter etc.

I've researched as far back as I can go, even in the decade or so before we joined the SFL. There will likely be omissions when games we played were not mentioned in the press.

Here's a few things I've discovered from or early years.

Almost nothing of our activity in the 1870s exists in print. Even the handful of teams mentioned as playing football at the time have long gone.

The earliest mention of us is this friendly, from 16th November 1878 -

D-jP_KCXUAI8C8m.jpg

The opposition played on a public park in the Queen's Park area. We had already competed in two Scottish Cups by then.

Earliest mention of Morton goalscorers were from a Renfrewshire Cup tie in 1883 against Woodland (Paisley) which we won 4-0. Scorers were Allan, Reid and Gillespie - the scorer of the fourth goal could not be made out as it came from a "scrimmage".

In the early 1880s we played a handful of friendlies and entered the Scottish and Renfrewshire Cups, plus the Greenock & District Charity Cup, which ran for around 10 years.

The friendlies were mostly against teams in the Greenock, Paisley, Dumbarton, Ayrshire and Glasgow areas, most likely due to transport, and these increased in number as the 1880s went on. There was no rhyme or reason to them - one season we played Port Glasgow in five friendlies and a cup game.

More than half of the games were at Cappielow, which suggests that it was a more desirable venue than other grounds at the time. Seasons also began with Morton hosting local sports and athletic competitions on the Saturday before the first game of the season.

The Renfrewshire Cup was a much bigger competition back then and often hotly contested - I've found reports littered with protests, pitch invasions following hefty tackles, disputed goals and even teams refusing to appear for replays.

It was interesting to see that it was a while before we became the most prominent team in (what would become) Inverclyde -

Port Glasgow Athletic (played at Clune Park)

Greenock Southern (Finnart Park)

1st Renfrewhire Rifle Volunteers (Volunteer Park aka Academy Park)

John Dunlop Templars (later Greenock Abstainers)

- were more regularly mentioned than us for a few years in the press at the time.

By the end of the 1880s our seasons started in August and ended in May and we were generally active most Saturdays.

Our 2nd team at the time was often referred to as "Morton Strollers", and there are a few mentions of us playing a 3rd side too. "Swifts" was a common 2nd XI name among Glasgow teams.

For one season (1891-92) we were playing a league called the Scottish Alliance (finishing 3rd behind Linthouse and Kilmarnock). A number of teams left it and reverted to friendlies.

In 1893-94 we joined the Scottish League in the newly formed Division 2. In the summer of 1900 we were elected to the 1st Division (along with Partick Thistle).

Anyway, if anything major crops up I'll stick it on social media.

Much appreciated the comments and memories from those who were following this thread.

Cracking thread!  Brought back some fond memories of when I first started following Morton regularly in the old 2nd Division in 94/95 and from the comeback years of 02/03 and beyond!

Some nice history lessons of way before my time too!

Much appreciated AryshireTon!

here today, gone to hell
