Only one charlatan was handing out contracts and that was Hawke. Just goes to show just how ambitious he was.

Even in our current state, we can attract far better players.

I think that shows him backing the manager and his opinion rather than him dishing out contracts for the sake of it.

I don't think the signing was that baffling. He was a young player we took a punt on when we needed numbers.

What was baffling was continuing to play him when it was clear he wasn't doing the job for us.

Agree with that. While he had limited first team football, he was young and was rated as a prospect. Remember listening to Sportsound last season and Billy Dodds reeling off all the youths they had given a first team break to that they rated and Dykes was mentioned.

A player like that, given some chances in the squad and hope they develop over time wasn't that baffling a signing.

The contract extension was the baffling part and pretty much ended any hopes of Dykes being accepted here when it wasn't deserved, wasn't normal, and nobody else got one.

So, the patter that Warren Hawke was giving it at the Q&A, about Dykes being the callibre of player we want to bring in and develop, was indeed fucking nonsense?

Usual pish from him.

10:46: the 'thur talkin' aboot ma mate Hawwwke' Batsignal suddenly appears over the Greenock skyline.

10:51 - the caped crusader himself arrives!

I don't think the signing was that baffling. He was a young player we took a punt on when we needed numbers.

Erm no. Dykes is a central midfielder; the very last position where we 'needed numbers' last season. We had Millar, McAlister, King Snake and Telfer all signed as key first-team player wages, and Lyon had already made his mark against Queen of the South at Palmerston before the window opened. It was an idiotic signing that had nothing to do with addressing squad depth at all.

I think that shows him backing the manager and his opinion rather than him dishing out contracts for the sake of it.

The club is heading into the final weeks of the season and is yet to even confirm its Championship status for next season, due to the incompetence of a manager that the board - quite clearly - was no longer convinced was up to the job. You're a gormless chief executive from the north east of England, do you:

i) sign off on a twelve month contract extension for the lovechild of the current manager, even though both the club and the manager's situation is not yet established beyond the start of May or

ii) refuse to do anything of the sort until the season is over and the club can fully assess its options

If you chose i) then congratulations! You've just put the cherry on top of a thoroughly useless spell at the club and will now be emptied from the club yourself as a result. But never fear - your community trust lackeys can still be trusted to white knight for you long after your abysmal tenure has come to an end.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

Handing Dykes a deal was one of the worst things JJ did. Him and Hawke making sure we’d still be feeling the impact of his reign of terror long after he was gone. I can’t agree with the initial signing either, for the reasons VT has already pointed out and the fact he was 22, played a paltry number of games and had failed to actually tie down a position. As well as not being rated, at all, by Ross County fans - all the signs were there of him being a complete dud and one that simply should never have been here in the first place.

Good luck to the boy, he’s a nice guy and is obviously not the one to blame for any of this.

So Warren's PR agency is now casting him as a fearless 'backer of managers' making brave contractual decisions, his recruitment endorsed by such luminaries as Billy Dodds?

Shame he couldn't have brought any of this Cloughian nous to the Charlie Telfer situation, then, instead leaving the club with his tail between his legs the following week.

Greenock Morton Football Club are delighted to announce the double signing of midfielder Cameron Blues and defender Henk Van Schaik from Livingston.

21-year-old Blues joins the club on loan until the end of the season following a successful loan spell with Berwick Rangers last season. Coming through the youth ranks at Falkirk, the midfielder signed for Livingston in June 2018 and has been a target for manager David Hopkin for some time.

Dutch defender Van Schaik started his career in his homeland of the Netherlands before joining Livingston in 2018 where he made his senior debut appearing as a substitute against Celtic. Following a loan spell with Dumbarton, he has today arrived at Morton from Livingston for an undisclosed fee and has penned a deal until June 2020.

Subject to registration, both players will be available for selection in tomorrow’s Betfred Cup game against Queen of the South at Cappielow.

Struggling to comprehend how a loan spell with Berwick can ever be described as 'successful' tbh.
