TorontoTon
Here is a lengthy report on the away game at Hamilton on November 11, 1944 from my dad’s wartime diary:8th League Trophy match away, at Douglas Park, HamiltonHamilton Accies (2) 4 – 2 (0) Greenock MortonScorers: Crum, Whyte (pen) Team: Johnstone, Maley, Higgins, Campbell, Aird, Whyte, McInnes, McAloon, Crum, Garth, Kelly. Morton played away from Greenock in the first half. Maley gave away a corner to McColl. The corner kick goes to Dougan, his drive held by Johnstone. Whyte slammed a shot well wide, and a collection of offsides followed, frustrating Morton’s attacks. Maley ran across the field to cut off a Jones break, and Aird then headed clear from another dangerous situation. Kelly then crossed to Crum who shot just a yard wide of the left post. A McInnes break led to two quick but unfruitful corners by him, and McAloon then sends a shot wide of the right post with a clear sight of goal. A Morton cross-field passing movement ends with McInnes sending a shot over the bar. Hamilton then went very close, a Dougan volley hitting the far left post, Burns missing from the rebound and Johnstone diving at his feet to deny a third chance.A Crum break earned a corner, but Kelly could only send his shot from McInnes’ cross over the far upright. A very sharp shot by Herd for Hamilton has Johnstone making a full yard and a half of ground to make a marvel save with one hand, then smother the ball on the goal-line. Accy appeals for a goal are properly ruled down. At the other end, a curling Kelly cross was just too far for Crum, and Ryan in the Hamilton goal then pulled off a very good anticipatory save from a Campbell whiz. Herd then heads a Campbell cross over the bar, and Ryan from the goal kick can only find McAloon, but his return shot goes just wide.Hamilton then lay siege to the Morton goal, with Maley and Aird heading saviours. McCall has a fine shot tipped past the post by a sliding Johnstone, and Herd sends a shot well over after a fine move. The deadlock was broken when Burns scored from a penalty, low to Johnstone’s right, after Maley got his legs in the way of Jones. McColl then got the ball in the Morton net from a Dougan cross-shot but was offside. A long but threatening Lowe shot heading for the top left corner of the Morton net was just intercepted by a diving Johnstone. Dougan for Hamilton was then injured and has to limp for most of the rest of the game. Whyte heads the ball past the post from a McInnes corner, and Ryan jumps over his own bye-line in avoiding a Kelly charge. Just on half-time, a curving McColl cross was tipped into the air by Johnstone, who loses sight of the ball, which falls to Herd who knocks it home for Hamilton’s second goal. A low shot to Ryan by McAloon opens the second half. A Kelly corner starts a siege that involves two blocked shots and finally Kelly sending a shot over the bar. McInnes then shoots past the right post. Injured Dougan commits three successive fouls on Whyte. Aird can then only send on out-field pass to Jones, who runs through to score at speed low to Johnstone’s left for Hamilton’s third goal. Worse was to come, when a longish hard shot from Burns was mis-handled by Johnstone, who ends up palming it into the net for Hamilton’s fourth. Whyte whams a free-kick over the bar. Herd breaks through for Hamilton, but Johnstone stops the shot that was going just over his head, catching and clearing the ball. A nice hard Garth try went into the side-netting, and then Morton do finally score, with CRUM converting a Kelly cross from the left with a shot under the diving Hamilton goalkeeper Ryan. Hamilton replied with a fine shot by Herd, Johnstone diving to the far left post to save. Jones sends a shot over for Hamilton before a McAloon wham to just above the goalie is tipped by him onto the underside of the crossbar. When the ball comes down, goalie Ryan turns over to get the seemingly certain goal clear. Morton did get a second goal following a dirty charge by Anderson at McInnes’ back. WHYTE sent the resulting penalty home via the bottom of the left upright. The Accies forwards were now visibly tired, and an Aird header from a free kick by McInnes went past the left post. Lowe for Hamilton is then injured in a spectacular clearing header away from McInnes after a Campbell centre. A long Jones drive is then sent over the bar by Higgins, and a weak corner by Dougan for Hamilton ends the game.Best Morton player: Aird.

Toby
Harry Curran’s last minute equaliser at Somerset Park was the absolute peak moment of the bad old days. Club on it’s absolute knees against what was then one of the best teams in the league and scraping a draw well into injury time right in front of the Morton fans. Absolute SCENES that day.
