Deprivation

I'd guess that it owes as much to an abject lack of investment  and declining services as much as poverty etc. Greenock has been horribly, horribly served by every level of government for decades in just about every way; the central area surrounding the Oak Mall (and the mall itself) is a genuinely depressing place to pass through; the entire coastline has effectively been wasted on shite pubs, hotels and and absolute monstrosity of a theatre that's so shambolic that it manages to loose money from a bar situated right on the banks of the river.

All that said, there is a huge amount of potential for the area with a bit of vision and ambition, but as long as we keep being lumbered with cretins like McCabe and co then it's unlikely that's ever going to be realised. That probably applies across the board though: local governance in Scotland is a disaster and needs revisited from top to bottom and the blame for that lies solely with the Scottish Parliament and a succession of mediocre, insipid governments.

I fail to see how the Scottish government is responsible for the complete failure of local politicians to attempt even one scrap of joined-up thinking in attempting to revitalise a post-industrial area: Glasgow for example has managed to do so quite effectively under the same national authority. There has been a complete failure at the level of local government to establish just what exactly Greater Greenock's economic purpose ought to be. All logic points to it being a thriving commuter belt town with correct and consistent intervention: instead they have gone for a pic and mix strategy that explains the dysfunctional mess that we see right now. Not that they're helped by crap external campaign groups who think that bringing back the shipyairds!!!1111!!! (at the drydock) or maintaining them at all costs (Ferguson's) is somehow the answer to the area's problems (caused largely by the economics of shipbuilding in the first place).

If a school was failing as badly as Inverclyde Council then it would have been placed in special measures long ago; so all councillors should be emptied from their posts as a result of this verdict and the area governed by competent civil servants in Edinburgh until conditions improve and it can be shown that there are responsible adults able to govern at a local level.

The site is supposed to be a place for the extended 'family' of Morton supporters - having an affinity with people that you don't know, because you share a love of your local football club. It's not supposed to be about point scoring and showing how 'clever' or 'funny' you are, or just being downright rude and offensive to people you don't know, because you can get away with it. Unfortunately, it seems the classic case of people who have little standing/presence in real life, use this forum as a way of making themselves feel as if they are something. It's sad, and I've said that before..

So, having been on Morton forums for about 15 years I guess, I've had enough... well done t*ssers, another Morton supporter driven away. You can all feel happy at how 'clever' you are

I was with you until the reference to "competent civil servants in Edinburgh".

Well the bar that they have to clear for merely greater competence than IC with taxpayers' money is 'not spunking money on a gubbins, failing, eyesore arts centre and endless fucking horse statues'.

Great post. We must have one of the shittest councils in Scotland. Continuos backward thinking and cross-party political games with zero thought for the bigger picture.

Hound them out. Clowns.

Which is where my point about the overall issue of local governance in Scotland comes in - we've got close to the biggest local authority regions in the developed world, and very little say in what goes on other than every few years when people insist on voting for the same old failures. If there was a far greatest sense of community empowerment, would the town centre really have been allowed to reach the pitiful state it's in now?

A huge revamp of local governance putting l communities much closer to decision-making processes would be hugely beneficial rather than just hoping some property developer builds a block of flats somewhere or other, or that Steven McCabe might have a good idea. Central governments, whether in Edinburgh or London are never going to provide the silver bullet for local issues, nor are the rent-a-goons than haunt the Municipal Buildings.

The entirety of Scottish politics seems to be gripped in a weird state of paralysis, wedded to the same old failed systems that nobody is happy with but yet still cling desperately to. It's well within the powers of Holyrood to reinvigorate local governance and communities; their failure to do so has been one of the biggest failings of the devolution era.

Indyref has a lot to do with that IMO. We can't seem to shake the conclusion of it and actually get on with running the country. Instead, we face party political games in local councils (Inverclyde being no different) leading to not very much of an outcome.

When i worked with the windfarm developer we had to go to public enquiry to get it through planning because Inverclyde council unanimously refused on the grounds that some old biddies from Kilmacolm didn't want their view being spoiled, amongst some other pretty tragic reasons for objection. There was opportunity there to use the deep water port across from cappielow to bring turbine compenents too and generate income within the area as well as many other ways. One example of the council playing games.

Was the plans for the whisky destillery up the cut knocked back as well? Perfect for the cruise ship passengers instead of being bused to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling etc.

Complete lack of forethough by all concered at our local council.

TIME FOR CHANGE!

Where on earth are you getting this claim from? The likes of Inverclyde or Clackmannanshire are micro-level authorities compared to their peers elsewhere; others that are geographically sprawling like Argyll and Bute or Highland are only that way because no cunt actually lives there. What exactly is distracting the clowns at the Municipal Buildings from addressing these problems affecting the core of their local authority area right now, some pointless hedge dispute in Kilmacolm?

The question is actually whether having so many local authorities - with all their well paid chief executives, senior officials and gormless elected councillors in tow - is a level of government that is both i) financially sensible and ii) leads to effective decision-making. Pandering to local pressure groups, electoral cycles and petty NIMBYism are all responsible for the jumbled mess of an approach that has failed Inverclyde for decades; in a genuine crisis moment for the area like this, I would strongly favour removing as many layers of third rate bureaucracy from the process and have a credible strategic plan for redevelopment being imposed dispassionately from the centre.

If there was a far greatest sense of community empowerment, would the town centre really have been allowed to reach the pitiful state it's in now?

What would 'community empowerment' do about eyesore leftovers from the 1960s or the simple economic fact that a council has given far too much land to retail space when there are far better and specialised alternatives half an hour up the road? I don't see how more Ronnie Ahlfield types are going to solve the major and complicated problems of the area simply by being some shan tribune of the people.
