TorontoTon
Glad to be able to provide a report on that 5-1 win against Hearts on January 13, 1945: 12th League Trophy match at home, at Cappielow Park, Greenock Greenock Morton (4) 5 – 1 (1) Heart of Midlothian Scorers: Adams, McInnes, Kelly, Whyte, Crum Team: McFeat, Higgins, Fyfe, Aird, Blair, Campbell, Adams, Whyte, Crum, Kelly, McInnes. Morton played toward Port Glasgow in the first half. From an early shy, Crum gave Kelly possession and from the near-left by-line he passed low and fast. Brown in the Hearts goal badly missed it, and ADAMS zoomed in to “knee†it home. McFeat safely held a try by Kelly for Hearts before Fyfe proves saviour with an interception, Whyte narrowly missing the same from a dangerous break. A nice Adams cross to McINNES in front of the goalmouth saw a clumsy header that nevertheless beat the keeper’s dive low to the right of the goal. Donaldson then hit Morton’s right post, and the ball bounced off Blair before being cleared. Fyfe dispossesses Hearts’ Kelly when close in. Philp for Hearts mis-kicked a clearance for a corner after a siege, but nothing comes of it. An Oakes cross to the far post finds McFeat out of his charge, but Higgins warily heads the ball past the goal-line to concede another corner. Blair then puts in stalwart work before an Oakes break and shot are safely covered and trapped. There was then a McLure free-kick, and the ball came to an unmarked Miller who slashes home first-time in the centre of goal, over the dive of the exposed McFeat. Crum on the right wing then crosses while falling, and the ball is headed out to KELLY, who returns first-time to beat the grasping Brown low at the right-hand post. Oakes responds for Hearts and sends a shot strongly over the near-angle of the crossbar and post. McInnes taps a shot past the post for a goal kick from an Adams corner. A long Walker try for Hearts goes past the near post. Fyfe, on his knees, finally corners the ball with his stomach and then clears it from a dangerous situation. A lovely McInnes cross then sees WHYTE head home at the low left corner. Whyte then beats three men in the penalty area while in possession of the ball but finally loses out to McClure. HT: Morton 4-1 HeartsThe second half starts with an Adams break, and he sends a cross along the face of the crossbar only for McClure to clear it away for Hearts. Brown then stops a Kelly shot and is able to hold the ball as Crum follows-up. End-to-end play with fouls numerous. A Whyte free is picked up by a stationary Brown at the left post. The Hearts ‘keeper then has a fine punch-out of an equally good McInnes corner. Philp heads a Miller free-kick past the post. Walker has a break for Hearts but sends his shot over the bar. McFeat holds a try from Kelly for Hearts. An outstanding take by McFeat of an Oakes cross was then applauded. Brown on the ground manages a punch save from a McInnes cross with Crum arriving. An unexpected chance to Whyte is then allowed to roll over the by-line for a goal-kick. Adams was questionably found offside when he found the net from a break. McFeat then manages another great “take†from an Oakes cross, and from the subsequent break, McInnes crosses low to CRUM who hits the left post before finding the net from the rebound. McFeat runs the ball out while holding it away from Oakes, but he is rewarded by being run-in on by Kelly for Hearts. Brown punches out another McInnes corner, and tips a Whyte shot past the post for another corner. Kelly and Philp are offside for Hearts, and Blair forcing another corner from a shot was the last action of the game. Best Morton player: McInnesReferee: W. Our first goal. http://youtu.be/a_j4WIxqRzE 2003 - Morton 2-1 Albion Rovers (Williams, McGregor) A vital win over a side who had beaten us twice already that season. Pegged back after Alex's opener, we threw everything at them. Late on, John Maisano finally got a corner past the first defender and Davie McGregor stooped to nod home the winner.
