The Big 2018-19 Squad Thread

A couple of have stuck their neck out and said the club should put deals on the table for Harkins, Lamie, and Murdoch. I can think of worse ideas to be sure, but I also think letting the new manager select his squad is a better idea.

If we had a Director of Football it would be a no-brainer, but we don't, we use the manager model (as opposed to the head coach model) and there's no point in undermining the new guy's recruitment except when we have compensation to protect.

It is a gamble, the club's approach, but so too would taking on squad management at the time they're trying to find a new manager.

Im one of the fudbook guys that have said we should have signed up Harkins, Lamie and Murdoch. I dont think replacing Harkins is an easy task, the folk in this thread suggesting Tids is going to replace him have been watching a different Tidser from me. Guy hasn't seriously kicked a ball for us since he came back.

I think its shortsighted to let our player of the season walk out the door to a promotion rival. Harkins setting up Dobbie is pretty deadly. I also worry that Murdoch and Lamie, potentially Oliver will be looking at whats going on and decide to leave as well. Remember this squad doesnt need a complete overhaul.

Hopefully the new man is appointed sharpish and brings some stability, for now though I'm pretty worried.

I want a pretentious signature too.

Harkins is a quality player who has had a good season, but he's not going to suit every manager's style. It could be the case that the new manager would have loved to have had Harkins in there, but it's not a no brainer if the new manager wants a quicker, higher tempo midfield.

Disappointing news however good luck to him

All this sentimental bullshit like "best of luck to him, except against us" can do one.

He's away to one of our rivals now ffs!

What i'd like to say is thanks for this season Gary, you were probably our best player. However, i hope you have a distinctively average season next year. And that's not just against us.

He's perfectly entitled to move on and if I was in his shoes, I would have probably made the same decision.

But fuck wishing him every success at another club in our division, especially one that's finished so close to our league position this year. Have a word.

Very much disagree on Tidser.

The new manager should be allowed to build his own team. If Harkins was irreplaceable at this level he would be going to a better side than QotS. It's not as if the top half of the league sides were fighting over him and it's not as if he's confident enough to wait and mull over what might be the best deal - he's taken an early offer to make sure he has something. He could have waited a week and signed for the new manager, but I can only assume that he wasnt confident enough to be certain that he would have been what the new manager was looking for.

I pretty much agree with ST. I can see both sides of this, and I'm not by any means trying to say "he was shite anyway" or anything, but at the end of the day Morton run a manager-focused club and the new manager needs to be able to make these decisions. I do trust that the BoD isn't going to hesitate in hiring the new guy.

Our supporters surprise even me at times but the Facebook crowd jumping on the club over the Harkins thing really are mental. We’ve lost Gary Harkins, not Xavi, he could’ve waited, he didn’t, calm doon.

I’m in agreement with you for a change.

Although the amount of abuse Iron Man is getting because of it is lovely.

Purdue impressed me in the title decider against Little Ayr. His movement looked good and he has a decent touch. I'd like to see a bit more of him before making any bold predictions, particularly against credible opposition.

You address me by my proper title, you little bollocks!

Brennan on LinkedIn:

It's all happening on LinkedIn. Here's McGowan's da (I think):

"Just an update on my goalkeeper looking for a club. We've had meetings with a couple of clubs in Scotland and 2 definite offers. Still looking to maybe add another few options. 21 year old goalkeeper. With 1st team experience in Scottish league 1 and championship. Member of league 1 championship squad. Youth international . 4 years in full time football. Distance is no object as boy is willing to travel to progress his career. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested or know of anyone."

Purdue definitely looks a good prospect. Reads the game well and picks out passes few of his peers would spot. Has a good frame on him too - a bit more muscle as he naturally develops and he could become quite a commanding midfield presence.

Can't compare him to the rest, as I've never seen the Development squad play, but young Purdue is a very talented footballer... stood out a mile in games I saw him play as a 15/16 year old.

Wonder how many of these boys will have been set for release by Duffy but are now getting a year's deal due to being under 23. Not suggesting they shouldn't be getting offered anything, just curious.

Was thinking this morning, wonder if your main man Russell will sign on, what with him being 22!
