AyrshireTon
April 26th - 1978 - Morton 3-1 Airdrieonians (Hayes, Goldthorp, Ritchie pen) And history was made. Morton promoted to the new top 10 for the first time ever, and barring any freak scores on the final day, they were Champions too. It took the management skills of Benny Rooney to get us there and he kept us there for 5 years, even topping the table for two weeks with a part-time squad. No Morton manager has come close to that since. Two (Tommy McLean and Allan McGraw) have taken us back up, but our stay was very brief. Davie Hayes scores the equaliser. The late Willie Gray celebrates the full time whistle. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie. AyrshireTon
April 27th - 2013 Morton 0-2 Hamilton 2002 - Queen of the South 4-0 Morton A joint promotion/relegation party as Queens headed for the 1st division and we headed for the 3rd. Many away fans in fancy dress and we sang about going to Hampden twice next season. The game was largely irrelevant at the time although finishing 2nd bottom would have kept us up with Airdrieonians going bust in a few weeks' time. Allan Moore scored one of Queens' goals, Peter Weatherson scored two. The home fans were very complimentary about us that day - a stark contrast to our next visit...... 1996 - Dumbarton 0-1 Morton (Anderson) A nervy display, especially late on as we needed to hold onto the win and hope that Dundee United beat Dunfermline at Tannadice. United winning the league would have meant them not needing the points the following week at Cappielow, which would in turn let us take the play-off place. The Pars won 1-0, meaning we needed to beat United now. http://youtu.be/2ulzY0aOUZs 1991 - Morton 0-1 Falkirk 1985 - Dundee 0-0 Morton We were already down. This dented Dundee's hopes of a European place. 1974 - Morton 0-3 Hibernian 1963 - Arbroath 1-0 Morton 1959 - Queen's Park 1-3 Morton (Phillips 2, McAllister) 1957 - Morton 6-3 Brechin City (Chatham 2, Beaton 2, Gourlay, Fleming) 1940 - Queen's Park 3-3 Morton (Calder 2, Fyfe) Scottish Regional League - Western Division 1929 - Queen of the South 2-3 Morton 1912 - Morton 4-2 Dundee 1907 - Morton 1-0 Clyde (McGuinness) McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. They hit the bar when it was easier to score near the end having not scored at home in months (brechinesque stuff) It was a cracking day weatherwise. I remember leaving finding out pars had beaten dundee united feeling like I did leaving stirling in 03. This is ours!! Unfortunately, we were without our mosy important players..... 20.1.
AyrshireTon
April 28th - 2012 - Livingston 0-0 Morton 2007 - Ayr United 1-0 Morton Final game, promotion celebrations on a glorious day with no-one caring about the score. Think one of the clubs ran an open topped bus to Ayr via Largs. Brian Graham got his first start that day. 2001 - Morton 2-1 Falkirk (Redmond, Matheson) Our last home game whilst in administration, and relegation already certain. 1990 - Morton 1-1 Airdrieonians (Turner) 1984 - Clydebank 1-1 Morton (Robertson) We drop a point whilst Dumbarton come from 2-0 down at home to Clyde to draw 2-2. We are still one point clear at the top. 1979 - Motherwell 3-3 Morton (Thomson 2, Ritchie) 1976 - Morton 1-3 Airdrieonians (McGhee) Spring Cup semi final - played at Love Street. 1973 - Morton 1-2 Aberdeen (Anderson) 1969 - Celtic 2-4 Morton (Bartram 3, Harper) Celtic showed off their silverware then Per Bartram tore into them. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Celtic remain the only club we have not finished higher than. 1909 - Morton 1-7 Rangers (Hamilton) FFS. 1894 - Northern 2-7 Morton Our second and final game against Northern, who left the league after one season, along with Thistle. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. AyrshireTon
April 29th - Clydebank 0-3 Morton (Anderson, Curran, Matheson) Played at Cappielow. http://youtu.be/hyqGmgtLfTo 1995 - Berwick Rangers 3-4 Morton (Lilley 2, Collins, Rajamaki) An eventful day across the border. We never really got started and found ourselves 2-0 down early on. We rallied and Lilley pulled one back before their keeper was sent off for bringing Marko down in the box, and Lilley scored the penalty. Right on half time Warren Hawke completed his hat-trick to put Berwick 3-2 ahead. A Derek Collins header brought us level and late on a weak Rajamaki effort was fumbled in by the sub keeper to much #scenes in the sun. News came through that Neil Orr's Queen of the South had held Dumbarton to a 2-2 draw and now we were top, with Dumbarton coming to Scapa next week for a title decider. 1989 - Clyde 2-1 Morton (Turner) Our "meh" of a season starts to fizzle out whilst ex-Morton players elsewhere make the news. Jim Duffy's Falkirk went to Airdrie where Jim Holmes scored a howler of an OG as they went down 3-0. Davie Irons scored the only goal at Forfar as Dunfermline edged closer to the title, and Clyde's win over us kept them within a point of third bottom Kilmarnock. 1978 - Morton 2-3 Dundee (Russell 2) Dundee got the win they needed but so did Hearts who then finished second, behind us on goal difference. 1972 - Morton 1-1 Kilmarnock (Mason) 1968 - Morton 1-0 Hearts (Mason) 1967 - Morton 6-1 Hamilton (McIntyre 3, Bartram 2, Mason) 1961 - Morton 1-5 Falkirk (o.g.) And the season finishes on a very low note as we finish bottom of the Scottish Leagues. Five wins, eleven draws, twenty defeats. 1959 - Morton 0-1 East Fife Goal scored by Dennis Mochan, the younger brother of former Morton player Neil Mochan. 1957 - Morton 2-3 Albion Rovers (Chatham 2, 1 pen) McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. AyrshireTon
April 29th - 1942 - Morton 1-0 Partick Thistle Scottish Southern League Cup - semi final replay 1938 - Kilmarnock 3-0 Morton 1933 - Morton 0-0 Clyde 1922 - Morton 1-1 Celtic (Brown) Riots and eveything. We were 1-0 up at the break, but they got the point they needed for the title. "Brake club equipment" anyone? 1916 - Morton 1-0 Motherwell (Gourlay) 1911 - Morton 2-1 Dundee 1905 - Morton 0-2 Rangers McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. AyrshireTon
April 30th - 2011 - Morton 0-2 Dunfermline Dunfermline win the league at Cappielow. http://youtu.be/QiXTntsz2pU 2005 - Stranraer 1-1 Morton (Weatherson) Last chance saloon and we blow it, allowing Stranraer to accompany Brechin into the 1st division. 1994 - Morton 1-2 St. Mirren (Lilley) Our consolation goal flattered us somewhat - we were never in this game. 1988 - Morton 0-4 Mixu Paatelainen Dundee United canter in our final home game in the Premier. Wylie at fault for two of the goals, one of which drew much abuse from the Cowshed, where he put his hands up in a "it's ok, it's going wide" motion - except it didn't go wide. 1983 - Morton 0-4 Dundee United Dundee United, edging closer to the Premier League title, paid for their support to travel to Greenock. http://youtu.be/v-xr8rVAZOM Also in Monday's paper, following that game - 1977 - Raith Rovers 3-4 Morton (Anderson, McGhee, Ritchie, Hutchison) 1974 - Celtic 1-1 Morton (McGhee) 1966 - Morton 0-2 Celtic McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. AyrshireTon
1st May - an eventful one, here..... 2016 - Falkirk 1-0 Morton Apart from this this one. 2010 - Morton 2-1 Ayr United (Greacen, Monti) Drama at the wrong end of the table. At the start three teams were fighting for safety, the playoff place and relegation. The table was - Morton 34 (-26) Airdrie Utd 33 (-14) Ayr Utd 31 (-30) Ayr took the lead at Scapa whilst Airdrie were drawing, putting all three teams on 34 points and us in the play-off place. Another couple for Ayr would put us bottom. Dunfermline took the lead at Airdrie (meaning we were back to 3rd bottom) and we then scored a couple of late goals - relegating Ayr. There was also a sort-of fight on the pitch between two fans. http://youtu.be/UcKykT-mihY 2004 - Dumbarton 3-0 Morton As was mentioned in a recent P&B thread, this was a shame game of the highest order. All sorts of commotion here as our promotion (never mind title) hopes crumbled further. Weatherson told to "get to f**k" by the fans as he was subbed, fans trying to get at Cowboy at full time etc.. 1999 - Morton 1-4 Ayr United (Anderson) More commotion. The game itself was completely irrelevant. Hugh Scott had published plans to close Cappielow and have us share with Airdrieonians for season 99-00. He then stayed away from the game avoiding the inevitable protests. Most knew that if Cappielow closed it would not have reopened and most likely have been sold. And to think we cheered the c**t onto the park when he arrived to replace John Wilson. http://youtu.be/iOoR9sg7G44 1993 - Clydebank 2-2 Morton (McCabe 2) Dave McCabe, never a favourite of McGraw's, scores his last goals for Morton. McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up. Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control... That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie.
