Today marks the beginning of a new feature on the forum, where we look back at Morton games and landmarks.

On this day in 2007, goals from Chris Templeman and Peter Weatherson gave Morton a 2-1 win away at Alloa, maintaining our title challenge in the Second Division. Yesterday also marked Templeman’s 38th birthday.

Ex Morton player Gerry Sweeney played for City. Disappointing one that, having gotten the 2-2 draw at Ashton Gate.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.
Hayes playing it forward, Bell being forced to do it all alone, now forward from Marr, here's Ritchie, still Andy Ritchie, look at the control...

That is a marvellous goal from Andy Ritchie. Twenty minutes on the clock and Morton's supporters come alive. A goal which epitomises the control, the arrogance, the cheek of Andy Ritchie.

On this day in 1983, a goal from Graeme Payne and a double from James Rooney saw draw 3-3 away at Dundee in the Premier Division.

Today also marks Michael Tidser's 28th birthday, here is Michael opening the scoring at Ibrox in our Scottish Cup tie away at Rangers. Happy birthday Michael!

16th January 1987 - Morton 0-2 Motherwell.

A vital relegation battle with two more Danes joining us (taking the total to five) - Karl Christiansen and Henrik Terkelsen. Both were total horse and neither played for the club again.

Prior to this, our last game on 16th January was in 1971 - a 2-0 home defeat to Motherwell.....

Didn’t we win the league in 86/87?

Yes - should have said 1988. Ah well.

On this day in 2014, a single Barrie McKay goal clinched a 1-0 win away at Livingston, marking Kenny Shiels' first win as Morton manager. Morton would go on to be relegated to League One.

2003 - we beat Albion Rovers 2-1 at home with Davie McGregor getting a late winner causing much #scenes that you wouldn't normally expect to see against Albion Rovers. They would win the other three meetings during our climb out of the bottom tier.

1994 - probably my lowest ever moment watching Morton. A re-scheduled derby at Love Street and the team completely collapse in the first half, going 4-0 down after 39 minutes. The home side took the foot off for the second half until Alex McEwan scored a late consolation forcing Saints to back up the park to make it 5-1. Much chanting of "McGraw must go!" throughout - real shame game stuff.

The shame team that day - Wylie, Collins, Pickering, Rafferty, Johnstone, Hunter, Lilley, Fowler, Shearer, McArthur, Tolmie. Subs - Alexander and Thomson.

1997 - this mince at home to Partick.

On a lighter note - Jan 19th

1999 - a double assist from Airdrie keeper John Martin got us a 2-0 win at the Shyberry Excelsior.

1980 - at 2-1 home defeat to Kilmarnock, back when nothing stopped football going ahead. Here's Killie's opening goal, filmed off a TV by a Killie fan.

The 1994 derby: decided not to go, fearing the worst. Watched norwich beat bayern in the pub instead but remember folk coming in after the game. Seething but not surprised.

Looking at that lineup. What even is that? 3-5-2? Shearer, Hunter and dougie centre backs. McArthur, Rafferty, Fowler in centre Tolmie and Lilley up top.

The injuries fully kicked in after this I think. A flukey last gasp draw with cowden in the cup. Youths and trialists fielded. George Sanders, Lorne Gibson, Stevie Aitken got his first game I think. Ricky Thomson, Paul Blair. On the plus side John Anderson and Hagi were unearthed.

We were utterly dreadful and am sure crowds dropped to 3 figures on a consistent basis.

The recruitment that pre season was on a level with 20 years later. Given the money we had taken in from transfers, "sustainability" may have been the buzzword.

The following season wasn't going much better until 250,000 was splurged on the two finns with Rae taking most of the credit

Parallels with sustainability and panic buys by the current regime!!

Finally, that season saw league reorganisation with 4 teams effectively being relegated to divison 2 with division 3 being created. Can't remember if the change had been agreed before.the start of the season. If so, classic forward planning from the board mirroring 2013-14. If there was a season not to gamble and economise it is when there is twice the chance of being relegated, or when the prize money goes up with the chance of 3 teams with large supports joining the league is in 13-14.

Our modern history is absolutely choc full of msimanagement such as this. I do wonder though if this season was what influenced raes view of mcgraw as a manager.

The reconstruction season had 5 teams relegated instead of the normal 2, although it was a moot point as we finished 2nd bottom anyway.

Down went Clyde, Stirling, Dumbarton, us and Brechin and up went Stranraer. We were indeed rancid that season.

Ricky Thomson scored a great header in a preseason win over Rangers - and was then dropped for half the season.

McGhee needs some support, there's no-one backing him up.

The Rangers pre season game, the WDE experiment game, was like the renfrewshire cup game from 20years later. Led to much unfounded optimism!

Aye, that's what I meant about the relegation. Having had a wee look at our league position finishes prior to then, I.think 92-93 may have been our highest finish in a wee while, followed by 2nd bottom and relegated with a few games to go......just like 20 years later!

January 23rd -

2010 - Raith Rovers 1-2 Morton (Weatherson got both)

1999 - Morton 2-1 Dundee

Billy Stark leads us to our first top flight scalp in the Scottish Cup in years.

http://youtu.be/Mu18ocN9WSA

1996 - Airdrieonians 0-2 Morton (Lilley and a peach by Janne Lindberg)

1988 - Morton 1-1 Hibernian

A rare non-defeat in that dire season and our third consecutive draw with Hibs. Jimmy Boag put us in front on a pishing wet day. Hibs' equaliser was odd in that it took the away fans ages to realise they'd scored.

1982 - St. Mirren 2-1 Morton

Knocked out of the cup at Love street after leading through Bobby Houston. Saint's won thanks to a Jimmy Bone header and a late long range effort from Abercrombie. The game was featured on Scotsport, but I can't find any footage.

I'm sure this started a sequence of us losing to St Mirren in 3 successive seasons in 3rd, 4th and 5th round.  The 1984 Qtr Final was particularly hard to take as we took lead and and missed a pen to eventually lose 4-3.

Dom Sullivan took the penalty with us 2-1 up - maybe someone who was there can say if it was saved or missed.
