Rangers Tax Case

Recommended Posts

Dunno if anyone on here has been following this blog, it's quite a good read. The guy who writes it talks a very good game and comes over as knowing his stuff. Of course he could be a bullsh*tter, but I'm not sure at the moment, I'm kinda giving him the benefit of the doubt. I suppose time will tell if his predictions will transpire or not.

But I had to LOL at the last paragraph of the most recent entry...

"As a measure of unmitigated gall, and as November approaches, it will be interesting to see if Whyte will indulge in the patriotic fervour of his predecessors during the Remembrance Day period. Perhaps under-equipped infantrymen returning from Afghanistan will be given free body armour this year rather than a free ticket to a minor game?"

Exectly what I've been thinking. If Rangers and their fans are so pound of Britain and the Queen, surely it's their patriotic duty (if you'll pardon the pun  ) to ensure all taxes they're liable for are paid promply to HMRC. :D

Hope they go into administration and get relegated to the third. I also hope it's found that Celtic have also been failing to pay their taxes. Bliss...

My tame CA tells me that the financial Jargon used in the blog is accurate modern financial speech.

He reckons that it is likely that a disgruntled former employee may be selectively leaking material.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences."

Surely you're not rich enough, or stupid enough, to employ the services and/or trust the advice of one of those 3 card trick artists? :P Just what is the teaching profession coming to? I fear for the nation's future.

That'll be an interesting one.

But think about this....

If the 'big tax case' goes against them it effectively means that they had an unfair competative advantage since they introduced the off-shore tax-free payment 'scheme' around 2001, as it allowed them to attract players that they couldn't actually afford. That being the case, if they're found guilty then shouldn't they be stripped of all honours won in the period that the 'scheme' was in operation? Serious question.

Would like to think that this would happen but leaving aside that the SFA don’t have the b** to question the OF how would this work if they have already “won” all the cups ect it’s not like drugs test in athletics when the gold medal can actually be taken off them.

I would like to see a harder line taken with the rangers if they do go in to administration like you say given the unfair advantage that they have had for years.

But a precedent has been set for the 21 points so they would have a case if a harder line is taken on them.

No they shouldn't. They would suffer the consequences going forward. Given the amounts talked about I fail to see how administration would solve anything. Surely a winding up order and liquidation would be the most likely (assuming the £50M claim is accurate).

I wonder if the relative leniency shown to Dundee (far more lenient than was imposed on Livi) was in anticipation of the authorities maybe having to impose a sanction on Rangers in the future? Had Dundee been consigned to the third division, the precedent might have had to be followed.

The penalties given to Dundee, Livingston (and Gretna, I think) were administered by the SFL.

Surely any sanctions for Rangers would be dealt with by the SPL?

They were, but IIRC the SPL allowed/facilitated them to limp on to the end of the season so all fixtures could be fulfilled.

I'm fairly sure it was the SFL who decided they should be demoted to the 3rd Division to minimise impact should they not be able to complete their fixtures (which they obviously weren't).

The SPL basically propped Gretna up financially (using creditors' money) until they got to the end of the season and then said it wasn't their problem any more. The subsequent relegation to the 3rd division was the SFL's sanction.

It may be different bodies but nevertheless a precedent may have had to be avoided as all clubs are also under SFA jurisdiction.

That's a bizarre conspiracy theory.

Why on earth would the future Rangers situation be considered for even a second by the SFL chairmen whilst they were deciding on Dundee's sanctions? Rangers (or any other "big" SPL club) getting relegated to the SFL would be in their financial interest.

Ach well, if HMRC win expect league reconstruction with a top tier of 42 clubs....can't have the Bangers being out of the SPL. How would the self service lot manage to cope with that crisis.

Really? I'm amazed that we've never heard about this before. You really should have mentioned it at some point.
